This thread makes Dungey's effort last summer really come to light.
I know RV had Dungey's number more often than not when they were both in their primes, but RV got beat by Josh Varize in a 125 race a few years after he retired. Dunge took 5 years off and ran competitively with the best in the world outdoors. No reason he couldn't do it for 20+1 indoors, too.
Dunge = retirement king
Reed was barley making mains 2 years ago and Alessi would probably be battling for the last transfer spot in a lcq.
Gp an sx is 2 completely different things and supercross now is completely different then McGraths era. Just like in 20 years Eli tomac will not even be close to making a main
"Barely" seems like a bit of an overstatement. He made the main 10 out of 16 times from his heat. He won 3 of the 6 LCQ's he went to and qualified 3 more times in top 3 LCQ.
I think 2 years off without a gate drops will definitely keep him out. Maybe he trains an shows up every weekend like privateers he would sneak in 1
Reed’s last year of racing is not really a great example, as he was riding injured and not training.
However with a bit of training he was only 1.5s off Tomac and Roczen’s qualifying lap time at Cardiff just a few months ago.
That well and truly puts him in the night show, but only if he’s fit and well prepared.
This was his lap time at aus x open when he was fat rc..
The last line is something MX sports doesn't understand for vet classes at the amateur national... Lol
MC is 51. No chance. He has even said himself riding SX is not "fun" anymore and there is a lot of fear involved. He's my favorite rider of all time, but his time has passed.
Reed with 4 months of training would still qualify.
I remember Forest Gump training for Des Nations a few years ago. I think he could transfer before the main. I seen him do it in practice.
You are all forgetting about Marty Davalos.....
The bottom line is we need a senior tour to take up intermission time
Dumbest argument of the day. They literally have vet 30+ and 45+ classes former pros who scored points cannot compete in, yet somehow that just escapes some people.
Pit Row
I guess he’s happy doing what he’s doing but it’s a shame that he isn’t racing anymore, considering his current apparent speed. Wish Kawi would have let him fill in some last year.
Lot of guys in here vastly overestimating how fast their hero/favorite rider is/was compared to how fast 14-22 place riders are nowadays. The list of retired guys that could even make the night show is very short and the list of those guys who could realistically make the main is about 2-3.
I would add Hot Sauce for the same reason.
I didn’t bother reading this after the first few comments. People are delusional at some of the names being thrown out there. What a slap in the face to today’s riders. Look at the guys in 10th-15th today. We saw Reed running in 13th consistently his last full year. That was how many years ago? Yes James Stewart would podium…..holy shit.
James Stewart
Broc Tickle
Ryan Dungey
Andrew Short
Ryan Villopoto
Trey Canard
Tyler Bowers
Mike Alessi (Well...)
This list is short
Dunge
canard
tickle
Osborne
possibly Davalos, Reed, grant
Throw baggett on the list above.
Albertson was barely making mains when he wasn't retired.
Dunge, Canard and Villo
No idea why you’d get downvoted on this? Andrew still rides his ASS OFF & is in great shape. If he spent a coupl’a months training for it, he’d make the main.
No worries, haters are gonna hate.
(that was jus’ a joke)
To be fair the question wasn't which retired pro could make a main event if they trained for X amount of time. I'm sure plenty of them could if they had the time to get back in shape and get some laps under them.
The OP asked which retired pro could make a main event coming off the couch.
I don't think Shorty would make the main event if he lined up tonight or next week.
Post a reply to: Retired Pro’s that could still make a main
