2018 250f Cracked at the foot peg mounts. 35 hours on a crank up build..

235 on the chassis. Anyone ever seen a crack in this area? That being said, anyone got a frame laying around? ): dealer is no help. Dad is a killer welder so that is an option but i don’t like the idea of riding a re welded aluminum frame.. Anyones experience is appreciated.

I do quite a few Aluminium (well, all types of ) frame repairs, but that's the first one like that I've seen on a KXF.

And, it looks to be quite a 'deep' failure - it's likely through from the top of the casting, way down through it, Not just along the surface. It looks to be all the way through it, past the threaded bolt hole Dizzy Shocked

Repairable? I daresay.

Advisable? - perhaps Not.

But, you'd want to try to work out what has brought it on. . Something often much easier said than done.

If one side is damaged like that, the other side may well be on the way to such a failure.

If a repair was to be done, it's wise to leave the frame unused for a period of time, after the repair - the (generally, though a mates testings have revealed a wild array of mixings of different alloys in most frames) 7000 series alloys used by the Japanese factories needs a bit of time for ageing / stabilizing after weldment.

Not a welder here... but to me that looks pretty "career ending" for that frame. If it was to be repaired, I'd say, I hope you like the pegs in the upper hole. Because I'd think you'd need to completely fill/eliminate that lower threaded hole with weld and not even attempt to re-drill and re-tap it if you're going to ride that frame.

Not ideal but i would move the pegs to the top position after gettting it welded. I actually think you'd be fine with it like that for awhile but I would replace the whole damn thing.

If there is one good thing about 4 strokes… when they blow up, they are usually parted out…should not have a problem finding a good roller or frame ……

As far as i know 17-20 is the same frame, im trying to get in touch with some PC guys to see if they have any more info on this. I have found one frame online for $1400 ): not ideal

My friends 2011 did the same thing. Believe it or not he still rides it. I’ve voiced my opinion on it and I would never do it but to each their own.

My dad always says when there’s a failure ask yourself what you did last.

When i framed the bike less than 35 hours ago is when i dropped pegs for the first time in the chassis’ life. Wonder if it stretched itself to a spot, once the pegs moved it had to stretch even more and couldn’t do it therefore it gave.

Less than 10 hours ago I serviced linkage and swingarm bearings for the first time since the rebuild. I spent good money on torque wrenches so everything is torque to, or intentionally just under spec.

I'd say you now know, for your type of riding, a 2018 KX250F frame lasts less than 235 hours. Good data point!

Now ... go get a replacement and polish up that desk ornament - it's a cool one!

I can tell you exactly what caused this. It was not 235 hours and the OP will not like it one bit.

Improper foot peg mount assembly. The correct mounting is the first and third hole for the upper and second and fourth for the lower position. What happened is there is 2 sets of holes in the mount and they used one from the upper and one from the lower. The frame got splayed by undue side pressure. Notice the galled threads.

Looks like the threads by the crack were plugged up a little with mud or corrosion and when he moved the foot peg bracket to the lower position (new set of holes) the bolt was binding and cracked the frame. I’m assuming that’s what he was referring to.

No, the bike was ridden with a side load on the holes... Due to the fact of it being the wrong hole. Hole 1 and 2 where used. Like I said before 1 and 3 or 2 and 4 are required. Good thing dad is a welder and it looks like he was going for the upper position so welding that puppy up won't be an issue needing hole 1 and 3.

The brackets come with two different size bolts so if they used 1 and 2 then they would have had to swap out hardware. Not saying they didn't but that's what it would have taken to validate your theory.

#1 and #2 take an m10 bolt. #3 and #4 take an m8. Definitely different sizes.

I can assure you, this did not happen. As stated above the hardware is different & i did not change that.
I’d have to imagine Kawi did that as a “fool proof” system.

This is my 5th Kawi with adjustable pegs and I am well aware of how the pegs mount.

Interesting theory though!

For those interested… I know without a frame jig, measurements are loose. However… New frame is in and i decided to take some measurements just for shits and giggles to see if there was a difference.

Cracked frame is roughly 1mm tighter at the swing arm pivot.
Shock tower to lower cross section, roughly 1.5mm longer.

As I said, I know without doing this digitally or on a jig everything is loose. Take it for what you will.

Sure looks like somebody has been in the top holes but maybe the sky is not blue.

You are the one buying a frame after all.

I challenge you to mount the pegs in the fashion you’re thinking I did, while retaining all hardware making no modifications.

You simply cannot install the mount in holes 1&2, fucks sake mate give it a rest.

Oh my, the wrong hole??? LOL.

Anyhow,  has anyone seen a dude on youtube called Hambini? He is a nutty engineering dude that used to work on air crash investigations.

An avid cyclist, he gets all these high end bicycle components and chops them up and rips the quality of their poor work. You should sent the frame to him. It's actually amusing watching him.

Guy asked about his frame. I said I knew but he wouldn't like it. The board HAD to know so I reluctantly opined because I knew this would happen. Now your involved. Who has the problem?
