If he doesn't race, that's two years running that Yamaha have won and hardly got to run the plate. How many titles are being defended next year anyway?

Winter and time off can change a man’s perspective.
And a big ole fat check... If he doesn't defend, I'll be real surprised.

I haven't seen anyone say anything about an outdoor option. But we all know this is somehow the best Eli we've seen at the end of his career. We KNOW he has his contract thru SX '23. But:

Does he also reserve the contract option for a '23 Outdoor Defense?

When I asked last, his response is he’s signed a contract for SX only and those races only (I brought up the incoming SuperMotocross series).

He doesn’t want to race more, he wants to race less at this point. Totally understandable.
What i want to know is what led to his decision to race SX only next year. I asked him back in 2020 how long he plans to race and he said "I don't want to put a number on it but I plan to race as long as I'm still enjoying it and still able to compete for championships. I won't keep doing it if I'm a 5th place guy"

He's on record saying he's enjoyed racing this year more than at any other point in his career and he's the defending SX/MX champion so it's safe to say his previously aforementioned criteria is satisfied.

So I have a hard time believing he told Yamaha he's not racing MX regardless of how much money the offer him. My guess is he out a really high number out there thinking if they agree great and if not, that's fine too. Yamaha likely countered and he said thanks but no thanks I'm perfectly content staying home and spending time with my family.

But that's purely conjecture since literally no one in the MX media has bothered asking him the story behind the SX only contract. One thing I've learned about ET3 is he's answer pretty much any question if asked but he's for damn sure not going to elaborate or expand beyond the specific question posed.

Lastly, you mentioned you asked him about SXMX? Link? What did he say? Is there any chance he might revisit his SX only deal? If not, is he planning to race it assuming he can qualify with SX only?

I have a hard time believing he's going to leave such a significant potential payday on the table but again, unless someone in MX media(not directed at you specifically) asks him all we're left with is speculation...

When talking about leaving money on the table, remember Eli has made tonnes of money, as has had his Dad, they have the badass ranch, so his family are set and taken care of.

I know Tomac is keen for a Porsche, but he doesn't come across as a material guy does he, if he and his family are set then the value of spending time with the family and having some time for himself probably has more value than pulling in even more money.

The only thing that'll make him race is if he wants to race. At the moment, he's gone out on top Outdoors wise, so if he was leaning toward just doing SX, winning this championship probably just cements his thoughts if anything, but we'll see, who knows how it'll actually shake out.

Heck at this point if Eli wants to play with fast cars I would think that with his name all he has to do is ask a manufacturer to get into their racing program at a ground level or something. He doesn't need to spend his own money on that stuff Smile I'd love to see him outdoors one more time but I can totally see where he has had enough but can get motivated for one more year of SX.

Eli was about 12 or 13-years-old when his dad quit racing. Does that make him more likely to continue?

Outdoors pay little money and has all of the travel of SX. SX pays big money and is a 5 month season and done. Plus you only need to train for one discipline. A lot of guys have looked at Brayton the last 3-4 years and like how it works for them. Hence why Marv, Eli, Kenny, Cooper are all SX only next season

Can’t believe his first pro outdoor race he comes in and goes 1-1 and then 12 years later goes out on top with a 1-1 and another championship. Freaking amazing. I’d love to see him race again next year but if that’s me that’s how I’m leaving my outdoor legacy. Go ride off into the sunset having some fun racing supercross for a few years then go and enjoy the rest of my life.
He went 3-1 at his first national.

It really is out of this world to win your first pro race and it being a National. 17yrs old beating the best in the world. Pourcel was no joke either. Not like he won against a weak field.

Why can't Hannah, Barnett, Bradshaw, Carmichael, Villopoto, and Tomac just race forever?

Yes there are tons of others who were amazing, these are just my favorites.

It's always interesting to see what these hyper-motivated guys do when they no longer need to train and race. They're giving up a ton of structure in their lives. Dungey definitely seemed restless. Stew disappeared. RV became the best ex-champion ever (#2 on the track, but #1 in our hearts). Most seem to stick around the industry. Tomac seems like he might go into hermit mode for a long time.

ET3 is probably going to be busy for a while stocking up his doomsday shelter with salmon and elk.😉

Nah, not with how things are going now.

Who knows, things might get interesting, but SUPERDUPERMOTORCROSS took the air out of their sails. If it's a bunch of retired dudes racing I doubt it, that championship wouldn't hold much weight. Does he really want a championship beating Justin Brayton and Chad Reed for 7 rounds?

Supercross is from Jan-May 5 months yes. But outdoors is shorter....only 4 months.

I would be very surprised if he does any motocross racing at all after MXdN. He will bow out on top, and he has every right to do that.

SX on the other hand is different. I could see him racing US SX and maybe WSX in 24.

I think he went 1-3 in his first race for the overall.

It would be good if he did a few races next year.. first couple, red bud and Colorado maybe?

I think he or his dad mentioned that he doesn't want to race MX anymore because of the travelling schedule. He's over it.

I disagree. One, WSX will probably throw a boatload of money for Eli just to show up. Two, he has already said he likes the idea of the series and getting to go race in places he has never been. Three, ummm...I doubt he cares who else will show up to ride against. A win is a win...especially when you are making big bucks to be there.

Just racing sx he can fly in 1 day out the next and be home all week. Since his whole program is at home that's a fairly light schedule as far as travel. I'm in the go out on top club and milk sx for a few more dollars.

He finished 2nd the first moto at Freestone round 2, also. So the first three motos of his career he went 3-1-2. He famously cooked himself though that race and wasn't the same in mx again for awhile

Personally I’d be shocked if he didn’t race outdoors next year. I think he wanted to wait till he wrapped up the title and that way he could pretty much ask whatever he wants money wise to come back next year.
