Man I get what you're trying to say, but trust those of us who have REAL exposure to the raw and real side of this.... I've dealt with many addicts who would never hurt a fly, loaded or not. I've dealt with stone cold sober people who are full of evil and hate. His PATTERN of behavior is definitely somewhat guided by the addictions, but it's a base problem with him when this path is all he seems to know how to follow.
