On the one hand, I like this. Limiting exposure to extreme heat is a good idea. On the other hand, I kinda don't like it, everybody has to deal with the same conditions. If you're unable compete the race safely, pull off.

Ron Lechien probably raced it and got a top 3 with a gnarly hangover and only 30 minutes of sleep the night before. And if there was a few more laps he probably would've won. Laughing

He probably burnt a joint before each moto as well!

According to Pulp the teams were on board with the decision, which means Chase and Eli were fine with it. If they're cool with it, I'm cool with it.

Yeah man, Eli is in his Prevost on the way to Pala asking his dad on a secure link how he will get through this unprecedented turn of events. The F’ing horror. No way to adjust, he may as well take his 25+ years of riding and racing at the highest level and toss it. Changing this to 25 minutes has totally screwed him up. Not sure I’ll make it either. Waaahhh.

Seriously

It’s not the air temp, it’s the dew point.
If it really is that high things could get ugly.

It's a shame we have the best racing in years and all these little things keep happening. 2 rounds at pala, MAV tv not working, commercials and now this.

It’s not a major problem - just take the 5 minutes off the start of the moto instead of the end so if there’s an end of race battle brewing it won’t be cut short.

On a more serious note…

The top guys aren’t immune to heat stroke and heat exhaustion just because they are fit. Furthermore most people who suffer it badly aren’t aware until too late as it affects your mental capacity.

Last year my wife’s cousin, who rides hard enduro and was a top ten runner at the big events like Erzberg, Sea to Sky etc, was riding an event here on Australia and suffered a severe episode of heat stroke. Was close to death, hospitalised for over a month, lucky to not suffer any permanent organ damage and won’t ride hard enduros ever again.

It can happen to anyone.

Safety first.

But this really sucks for the championship. Gaps between the two at the end of motos seem to have tightened as the series has progressed. As close as these two are 2-3 laps is a big deal.

When, not if, one or the other is closing 1-2 seconds a lap as the moto is winding down and closes it down to 2 or fewer seconds at the checkers the championship will always have a cloud around it.

Edit: IDK 104 temp with 20%-30% humidity and a sub 60 dew point… Central FL is 94 with a 74 dew point and 60%-70% humidity. Both are brutal but I think the dew point and humidity Trump a higher temp. They need to run 30 + 2. If you’re not training in CFL and/or not in shape then ride accordingly. But if a rider is training in CFL they should be able to handle it… and a bunch are.

So why stretch the day out to a more hotter part of the day?
Why not have the races earlier in the AM -(that's been most folks opinion).

DC fucked a lot of shit up this year. 100 and dry is nothing compared to 100 and 80% humidity in central Florida where they all train.

Shortening the motos is obviously not the only option. It’s probably the option that disrupts the logistics of the event the least.

No one here was privy to the decision making process. I love it when a bunch of people with zero accountability for the outcomes start throwing around their “solutions”.

Shortening the motos due to heat that is one thing. Seen it done in mud races as far back as I can remember.
But stretching the day out to racing later when it's hotter makes no sense to me and makes it more unsafe IMO even with a longer break between motos.
Is logistics more important than safety?
A lot of us on here grew up in the sport and all understand heat and have raced in it at many different levels.
That's where my opinion comes from.

At a location with high heat and high humidity, quite different from Socal.

I’ve only ever ridden and raced in hot climates.

I guess you’ll have to ask MX Sports.

I'm sure you have.
And I'd assume you probably would rather race/ride in the cooler part of the day rather than the hottest part of the day. Smile

25-minute Moto's? What happens if one of them goes down in the first turn or gets a bad start?

Sure.

And that is one option to reduce risk of heat exhaustion. Another is to shorten the races with longer breaks.

You may be forgetting The Dogger's rep for (not) training. Longer motos were his biggest hindrance. It cost him a lot more wins, IMO. The most natural talent ever, but he didn't have the same endurance that Bailey, Johnny O', Johnson and Wardy had.

I don't like it... You wait for the closest championship in the sports history to try a stunt like this? I understand safety but geez. Doesn't lengthening the day make things less safe, especially for the fans who doesn't have AC RVs to retreat to? Who made this decision?

Eli and Chase have both already suffered from heat exhaustion before, I’m sure both of them are all in favor of preventing that from happening again.

"He got overheated, basically, and by the last laps he was practically passing out on the bike. He just wouldn't quit. That was Josh: He just had so much heart and he wanted to be back competing at this level so bad that he wouldn't have quit for anything." - Bill Lichtle.

That is the racers mentality, in the moment you may not even realizing you are gassing yourself to an extreme level. In addition to that mentality, a symptom of heat stroke is poor judgement and decision making. I don’t get the big deal of trying to play it a little safer than normal when you’re flirting with 100+ temperatures.

Five minutes less really won't make a difference. 20-minute motos would be even better. This is CYA.
