My buddy collects old moto memorabilia and saw an ad for vintage mx gear, magazines and posters with a few parts available for Honda CR's on craigslist yard sales. He stopped by and while snooping in the garage saw a bike covered in a tarp and asked the seller what it was and if he could take a look. It turned out to be this beauty, a 2001 CR500 that doesn't look like it was ever ridden in dirt. He frantically called me to tell me to get my ass over there. I went over and couldn't believe how clean it was. I made a verbal deal then I went back yesterday morning and handed over the cash. I just raced my friends '97 CR500 at PIR in the vintage race Thursday night for the second year in a row and was thinking it's time to finally buy or restore one for myself. They are surprisingly pretty balanced bikes. People are telling me I am crazy if I ride this one. One guy told me I'd lose $8k on that ride. I think I'm just gonna stare at it for a while in it's present condition and see what happens LOL Enjoy the pics of this pristine beauty.

That's even better than the 77 RD400 I picked up in May that has 3925 original miles on it. What an incredible find for you!

That is amazing.

What was the story behind the seller having something like that?

I'd perfectly understand if you swap and store unfindable stock parts (plastics, pipe, engine covers) with aftermarket, protect all you can, don't race it, or don't ride if it's muddy...
But not riding it AT ALL would be sacrilege!
It's meant to go fast, not stand still.

Great find!

The guy restored old bikes for a hobby. He had a pretty sweet XR75 almost finished in there that they weren't selling. I am guessing he bought this one to sit on. It was undercover in a windowless garage with some sort of an oily stabilizer in the bottom of the tank and carb. Sadly he passed away a couple months ago of alcoholism. His family was liquidating everything he owned.

It was just a couple days after the PIR race. I was all fired up on my buddies CR500 that I raced on Thursday. Those Rd350's are sweet!!!! I bet they rip!!

Unbelievable find Dirty Smile!!! Congrats. That thing is brand new. I had a ‘98 CR500 and I loved that bike. Sold it to get a new CR 250. Stupid decision on my part. Enjoy it and you got it at a great price.

My suggestion would be to detail it as much as possible. Put graphics or numbers on it if you plan to do that. Put fresh Dunlops on it and hopefully you have a connection for yellow dunlop tire decals. Once it's done with stickers and decals installed, then put some tire dressing on it, cover everything with SC1, and take it to a wide open field to photograph it in good morning or evening lighting. After you have several sweet photos of it.....then.......Braaaaaaaaappppp....because it will never look that good again.

All it is missing is the crate. I agree with whoever told you you will lose a lot of money if you ride it. Either keep it to display or sell to a collector and take the money and buy a more seasoned one to ride.

Agreed. It would almost be sacrilege to ride that. Display or sell it and buy a used one to ride. What a score!

Wow. That's awesome!

For $5k in this day and age I'd say that's the deal of a lifetime. I have a '91 that is very well worn (literally hundreds of hours) and I got offered $4,500 for it awhile back.

My vote: ride it.

*I may swap out the stock plastics and pipe and silencer like someone else mentioned.
