Dungey is really good off the couch.... good enough that his competitors should probably start to worry... with a little good luck he is still in the running for this championship

Ryan impressed the living hell out of me today. I had high hopes for him , to get some top 5's and maybe get lucky and get on the box. I don't think " Luck " has anything to do with it........He was literally right there in the front pack the entire 2nd moto.

I have no idea how much stronger he'll get through the season , but if he rode the first 3 rounds like he did today......you would be nuts to NOT think of him as a title threat! He blew my mind today , and I loved seeing it!

Damn I'm really hoping they found something good with their new bike. Also hoping AP isn't out now because he seemed much better at High Point.

Dungey is a badass...4 races out of retirement and he's 2nd fastest next to beast mode:

I’m honestly floored by the rides I saw from RD today. Never in a million years did I think he could beat so many of these guys straight up after this many years. Yeah maybe if enough guys took each other out or by some other fluke but damn. The guy is a different breed.

Is there a reason why teams were reluctant to give Dungey a come back ride?

Probably because comeback’s don’t normally go this well!

You know he’s loving it because there’s no expectation of “win or nothing else matters”.

The pressure of being expected to win every time you show up has to be crushing. Now with him showing back up and not having that expectation, you can see it in his face. He’s happier, battling, and really just enjoying the hell out of this season.

Just like RV. He was a complete different person after he retired. No longer the Red topped Robot. Lively, fun, cold ones after the race and just all around more chill of a guy.

I wish this would tempt RV to make a couple rounds too!
I guess our heroes can’t be expected to race forever though.

Personally I had him at 5-8 before the season.. his ride today impressed the hell out of me.. I was shocked to see him up there!

The only ones that doubted him were the RV super fans that disappeared from here when he hung up the boots. Guy has been a machine his whole career and has battled and beat the best of em’, which he is still able to do after a 6 year lay off.

He may not have had that last little .01% of maniac speed to always match RV or Stewart, but the fact that he can come back after 6 years and still be competitive in the lead pack with a mix of the same guys who never stopped and the new generation is a completely different kind of badass. His comfort level just stays right up there, just took a few races to knock the rust off.

So in a post race interview Dungey speaks of apologies he needs to make to a few privateers. He's being sincere and it is "they" who are on his mind during the interview after the 2nd moto. That impresses me even more than his race did. That kind of quality and class cannot be purchased.

Dungey’s riding makes me wonder how many championships he would have if he did not retire! The Diesel is warming up. Tomac has beast mode, Dungey has tractor mode!

In this new revision, RD5 v3.0, I’m absolutely STOKED on the “balls” he’s shown. Especially these last 2 weeks! The dude is hanging it OUT!

I’ve seen more “Oh, hellllllll NO!” out of the “Happy Dude From Minnesota” than I think I’ve -EVER- seen before. Hell, I f he’d had this much fight in him back in his 250 days?
1. We’d probably not even know who the hell “J-Law” is.
2. There would be fewer rental cars destroyed.
3. Josh Hill woulda had a “more serious” career.
4. Suzuki would have more 250 titles.
5. RD5 would probably have an H&H tattoo.
6. KTM would’ve had to pay him AND Roger more $.
7. Marvin would t have had to “Let Ryan Win”.
8. Fox woulda sold even MORE gear.
9. Nike woulda made and SOLD those bad-ass Boots!
10. RV woulda had a harder time.

All that aside, I’m just glad he’s back & having fun.
ROFLcopter about fewer rental cars getting destroyed. 😆😆😆

I have been a Dungey fan a long time. Like many others I expected a 5-10 range, with a maybe 3-5 in the last few rounds, considering attrition but wholly cow, High Point showed he came to play !

I can't remember the last time I've seen him hang it out that much, which was awesome to see. I'm not sure if it's the no pressure, or just gelling that much with the bike.

I think this also helps the bench racing argument of whether or not the past Champions would still win if they were to race today. I know it's only been 5 years, but as always, the bikes have evolved, but the cream always rises to the top, a champion figures it out, regardless of generation or competition.

I'm kinda pissed because I was going to predict a good ride yesterday and I didn't post it. (I know, I know yeah right.)

His season has pretty much gone the way I expected it to. I figured the first race would be good because of riding an emotional high then come back to earth for a few rounds while the Deisel spools up and starts to get results when the series went east.

Since I didn't post a prediction before High Point I will predict that High Point is the worst result he has the rest of the year.

Great point. In all sports debates, not just moto, so many people attribute greatness to the time period in which they competed and not the winning DNA/mindset that the best possess. "Jordan would be average today because he couldn't shoot the 3", "Mickey Mantle wouldn't make the majors because pitchers were throwing 85mph in the 1960s", the list goes on.

Winners are not subject to the conditions of their environment. That is why they succeeded, they rose above the rest of the competition in their setting. Has professional motocross riding slightly changed since 2017? Maybe so, maybe not. But a Dungey, Villopoto, Stewart, Reed, etc. from their prime days (or in Dungey's case after 5 years of retirement) could still do what they did back then against the current field of riders because they knew how to win, they didn't luck into winning because of the circumstances.

To give more props to Ryan, this might honestly be the most impressive sports comeback ever. Has anybody ever come back from a 5 year retirement and done 95% as well as they did in their prime? I know Jordan came back after playing baseball and won three more titles, but that was only two years of retirement.

I think George Foreman spent like 10 years in retirement before he re-entered the boxing ring. He ended up winning the world heavyweight title a few years later. Man, it would be historic for the sport if Dungey pulled off something like that.

Sometimes I think a lot of peeps don’t get how Crazy Huge of a Fan I am of all these guys that hang it out & put on the truest & greatest races in all of Motorsports.

And, yes, that includes J-Law! Rental Car Destruction and all.
