IMO, Im partial to Yamaha and have been riding them since the 70s. I've owned a 18 and 19 and currently own a 20 and a 21. I will never say that shedding weight is a bad thing but I have never rode any of the bikes and thought, "man these are heavy" riding the bikes has always "felt" the same as other to me. The bike is wider then others b y a little, but being over 6 ft, I prefer the width of the bike, it is much easier to squeeze.

Now the airbox needs a better design. I like the whole concept of the reverse motor but the piece of bread, flat air filter needs to be made better. Ive never had a problem with the current filter, but I also know to be very careful when changing it. I also like to put a bead of grease around the outside of the filter which you really cant do with the current design. Well you can but it builds up and becomes a magnet for dirt. It needs to have some depth and the cover air volume needs to be bigger.

Suspension is BY FAR the best. In fact I bought a 21 because I had my 20 suspension worked on and wanted the stock suspension back. IT is that good.

Power is awesome, but again Im over 6 ft, 235 Vet A rider. It would be a hand full for smaller or slower riders.

Reliability is second to none.

So if i was Yamaha, losing weight is always good as long as it doesnt hurt durability and bigger air filter with more air volume in the cover.

That’s for a Honda. For some reason they won’t work in lowered position for newer YZ450s. They did on the older ones.

I'm running lowered Fastway's EXT on my 2020 YZ450F.

I had a 2020 also and never understood why Fastway said it wouldn't work in the low position. Good to know!

Not sure. I have the same pegs on my YZ two stroke and I believe they would work in "Lo-Boy" as well.

edit: attached picture of YZ450F with lowered pegs.

I'd love to hear from the older guys that rode in the 70's and 80's.

Did y'all bitch about new bikes this much this much in the 70's and 80's? Wanting weight reductions, better rider triangles, better this, better that, new this, new that or were you all happy with what you had and content with even having a bike to ride in the first place?

I hear my pops tell me all the time that we are spoilt/spoiled and complain too much with what we have today compared to what he grew up riding. I always heart that he was just happy his bikes held together long enough to get through a full year and that kids today have no idea how good they have it. I can't say I disagree.
I bitch today about my 1981 Yamaha TT-250 I rode when I was 11 y/o. That bike was overweight and outta shape. Now I just bitch about myself when riding my '19 YZ450FX. I'm overweight and outta shape.

I can see them changing the rider triangle. I have pretty short legs and i'm relatively short (175cm), and for me the current triangle feels fine but i can see how anyone with longer legs or just longer body is struggling with the short footpeg to seat distance.

Dude, MXA literally bitches about the graphics that come on the bikes. And always have, as far back as I can remember

You have to admit that it was a bit annoying when the graphics lasted about 10 minutes on the first bikes with plastic tanks...
You don’t have to worry about graphics blowing off after 2 washes anymore. Just $100 shrouds.

I'm expecting updated plastics and styling. Front wheel probably a little lighter, since they updated the back wheel in 2022. Lighter swing arm perhaps. That's it I figure.

Lots of updates coming:

★ New spoke pattern on front wheel matches '21 updated rear.
★ New bold plastic with updated ergonomics.
★ Header now wraps twice around engine for even more bottom end.
★ Per rider feedback from Eli Tomac, midsection widened by 180%, allowing even more grip.
★ Likewise, hated KYB SSS components replaced with air forks, as favored by factory teams.
★ New RAM-design airbox connects directly to rider helmet for better auditory feedback.
★ New dual-position adjustable footpegs allow rider to adjust between very high and even-higher positions.
★ Power tuner app replaced with more advanced MIDI programming via Motif Synthesizer.
★ Per online feedback from owners, clutch is even cable-ier. We just added even more cables to it.
★ New anatomically correct dual fuel cap location allows riders to fill up if preferred front or rear, if you know what we mean.
★ Special 'Monster Edition' comes complete with Monster Energy branding, '69' numbering, and street-bald rear tire from sooo many sick burnouts, bro.

Wow! More changes than I expected! As James Stewart would say "so forward thinking, everything else seems backwards"

Yamaha would be stupid to change suspension.
It has been the bench mark since 2006.

That is not how motorcycle development and manufacturing works.

Now, with this bike, if it's going to be run around on the back wheel, in the mean streets of Miami, but dubious characters from countries South of the border, why would they need a helmet? "New RAM-design airbox connects directly to rider helmet for better auditory feedback"

Did y'all bitch about new bikes this much this much in the 70's and 80's? Wanting weight reductions, better rider triangles, better this, better that, new this, new that or were you all happy with what you had and content with even having a bike to ride in the first place?

Lol. We were looking at monumental shifts like water cooling, disc brakes, single shocks, upside down forks…..and that was the 1980s. I think in the 70’s they were looking for frames that didn’t need to be welded every 3 races and plastic gas tanks that wouldn’t dent and or rust. I think if you could somehow stick a rider blindfolded on a 10 year old 450 they wouldn’t know it. Rider triangle……..

I remember geez how many years ago when everyone was panning all of the big 4 for still being stuck in yesteryear with cable clutches. Change for the sake of change isn’t always progress but if you don’t changes the (m)asses won’t buy.

Honestly I hope it stays the same. Change the 450 in 24 so I can run my 21 250 till the 25 250 comes. Haha. Makes me wonder on what they would even do? Aside from dropping weight and maybe a little slimmer? I love my YZ250F. Corners good for me and is stable so I can relax on the grip. The competition that ive ridden hasn't even gotten me wanting anything else. (Ill soon test out a 22.5 KTM 250 FE and see what thats like)

A friend who works at a high profile Yamaha dealership told me the techs and engineers are saying they are ditching the reverse motor next year. I am very excited for that!

Absolutely not. The current suspension is absolutely fantastic for 99% of the riders out there and its not worth the 5 lbs saved by messing up the suspension with Air forks. Yes, those air forks make work great for elite level Pros, but the suspension that works for an elite level pro won't work for the average Joe rider. In fact, its likely avg Joe rider would hate it. If its not broken, DO NOT FIX IT. Want to shave some weight, go somewhere else. No need to get away from the best stock suspension in the industry (by a long shot).
