In the day 1970s schoolboy 2 day event Bellshill Northern Ireland. The biggest event of the year with top Irish English Welsh & Scottish kids attending.
Kids walked the track with the newest gear helmet & even goggles on & yes the goggles would steam up, did they take them off ? NO

Definitely understand that thought. It wasn’t meant to be clickbait. However, it does seem I got a few people stewed over it. My apologies 😬

The riders are wearing their helmets on press day track walk because they are about to ride the track just minutes later. Their bikes are waiting nearby.

It has nothing to do with seeing the track through the helmet.

Sometimes it's very hard not to be condescending on this website.
Yeah, that makes sense. Just seems like to me I’d leave my helmet on the handlebars and put it on when I’m ready to ride.

Hahah yeah it is but gotta have some tough skin on the internet. I don’t think you’d get so much hate in a real life conversation, maybe a chuckle or two. Welcome to the 21st century, I suppose.

Well it was supposed to flatten the curve.
So maybe they're wearing helmets to flatten the whoops.

Since it’s press day I’m assuming there is press there with cameras clicking. Maybe some riders do it for the sponsor exposure if their pic ends up being published/televised. I have no idea, just throwing it out there

Probably along the same lines as a lot of people wearing masks while they mow. Nothing to do with covid, just realizing "oh, this is more pleasant after I covered my face" for certain activities.

Finally someone with brains. You morans don't think, them helmet sponsor pay top dollar and want their products to be shown as much as possible. Kids faces ain't saling.

I'm teasing but evidently exposure is a or the reason to do so, like when having goggles at the podium/interview or gloves at signing times.

Surgical masks don’t have an air tight seal so you are getting plenty of oxygen with a mask. The general public most likely isn’t wearing their n95 properly to create that airtight seal and I guarantee they have never been fit tested for the proper n95. Even if you were wearing the proper n95 with an airtight seal it wouldn’t affect anything.

We also breath out 16% oxygen. Our alveoli in our lungs are so efficient we don’t need the full 21% of oxygen in the air for diffusion to take place in our lungs. I have yet to see any mask decrease oxygen sats in a person or increase anyone’s heart rate(healthy adults). If anything, I’d be curious if any studies will be done on long term mask usage to see if any micro fibers from masks are being inhaled and what the long term affects would be on our lungs? Increased risk of infection? Cancer? Etc
Id be curious as well. I know there have been times that I can tell my mask is coming apart and you can feel those little remnants being breathed in. I work in the ED so I have one on A LOT. After a couple cycles of cpr and heavy breathing and sweating the masks really start to break down. Yes I now an N95 would be preferred but you don't always have time to think about getting one when someone code. Sometimes you just forget to go get the N95. TBH we are only required to wear an N95 when aerosol treatments are being used or patient is intubated.

Why do riders walk the track with a helmet on? It seems so odd to me seeing guys just walking around with helmets on, no bike in sight. Is it just to get a visual of what the track looks like through a helmet? Seems like if that was the case they’d be wearing goggles to me. Just sitting here watching A2 Press Day and it has me curious.
Safety?

Someone on here is going to the race. When you're in the pits...ask a racer, team manager, mechanic...why some riders wear helmets during track walk. Report your findings here. This will count for extra credit.

I would wear my helmet on track walk if it was freezing to keep my ears warm or if my motos were first.
I as well as thousands wore a sun buff for decades almost everyday all day as an outdoor guide and never heard about this masks make you sick nonsense until covid came around but i did still get sun cancer. Some doctors wear a mask every day all day their whole career and no one ever thought it was harmful. I never have worn a mask in a car or outdoors though during covid but i don't judge.

I totally agree with your whole post. I only wear an N95 on respiratory distress calls and cardiac arrests. Surgical mask for everything else until they lift the mandate. One mask won’t make it a full day without having to be tossed after getting worn out. I swear I’m breathing in the fibers and my chest feels irritated at the end of the day. I work in the 911 setting.

Because this has been bothering me since others may be in a similar boat ...

I tried to make light of things yesterday, but the primary reason I wear my mask so much (and forget I am wearing it a lot) is that my Dad is still at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, after a brutal blow from COVID-19. It's been 6 weeks - and this is on top of a 2-week hospital stay in November. He's been in/out of the ICU multiple times, on/off a vent, in/out of comas, had strokes from COVID-19 related heart issues, and he had to be resuscitated Christmas Eve (I watched this and prayed like heck in the corner of his ICU room, begging for more time with him). On January 5th, Mayo Clinic reduced the number of visitors who can see patients from 2 to 1 to contain Omicron breakouts. And these visitors cannot change for the duration of the patient's stay! So I wear my mask most of the time in hopes I can see my Dad again should they lift the 1-visitor rule (his wife is with him nearly every minute). The only way I will be able to see him again in the hospital is if I am 100000% COVID-19 free - so I try to be as ready as possible because I don't know how much longer he'll be around. If I am fortunate enough to get the chance to visit him, I hope for no delays. I need to be ready.

This is why I am an Idiot wearing a mask so much. And I've become soooo accustomed to it that even in my car - alone - or in my own house I'll realize I am still wearing it at times. Weird? Yep.

Please do not respond, I am not after pity, and frankly I wouldn't normally say anything. But know there are a lot of scenarios out there people are dealing with - most waaaay out of any of our control. Give Idiots like me and caregivers the benefit of the doubt. Every little bit can save a life - and when you're doing the best you can to help a loved one survive, well, you may exhibit some out-of-the-norm behaviors.

Again, let the downvoting begin.

Some people have very valid reasons that we will never know. A it seems so easy to judge others based on our own circumstances which are all together different. 8 years ago today I had a bone marrow transplant. I was not even allowed to go in public after and then when I was, I had to wear a mask for many many months. When no one else was. I got questioned and laughed at a lot. Because people can't see what someone else is going through in their life. I don't get how people are so quick to judge others they know nothing about.

Just an extra little point to ponder for an old fat guy..... It does seem odd to me that a rider would walk the track in their helmet when there doesn't seem to be a clear rush to get on the bike and go. But if I stop and think about it the other way around it starts to make more sense to me. I'm an old fat guy. When I go riding, the last thing I do is put my helmet on. Every stop we make while woods riding my helmet comes off. Why, because I'm old and fat and out of shape. The helmet is extra weight on my neck leading to quicker fatigue. The helmet also traps heat in my head and therefore my body. So I get it off quickly so heat gets dissipated quickly. All of the reasons I put my helmet on last and take it off first are due to my being old and my being fat and out of shape. None of these reasons apply to professional SX riders at a press day event.

There’s a lot of things that could be going on and I shouldn’t have judged anyone wearing a mask while by their self, driving around town.

I'm the guy that rips my helmet off as soon as I stop. My friend Dave feels cozy in his and will keep it on for a half hour visit. I guess most of them are Daves.
