Short/honest answer from seat of the pants: It's only a little "faster".

However, that's not giving the new engine enough credit. With the transmission updates, new ratios, longer connecting rod/heavier crank providing improved forward inertia in motion, and Keihin carb (power jet and STIC options), there's more room for improvement than ever before. The ridability is seriously better, and it's easier to ride without as many typical ' falling off-the-pipe' Fun25 mistakes. The torque improvement is more noticeable than just the HP number (assuming MXA's numbers are spot on). Also, it will get better with finely tuned carburetion; 22' standard settings were rich off the bottom and lean up top for us at GH.

Yamaha's a big company and they wouldn't make this investment without some future-thought. For those actively racing YZ125's (think Euro-scene), the 22' platform will surely be more competitive with some R&D and time. Honestly, I'm more than happy seeing anything besides BNG on two strokes coming from Japan 👍

listen to what he says at 7:50 - GYTR Kit gives about 5 more HP over standard... as we know the previous YZ125 GYTR Kit was good- but not the best investment in terms of engine power we can just think about whats possible to that engine with the help of ATHENA/GET, VHM, HGS...
Lets see whats possible

the stock bike already got 35 hp.

if i can get my yz to 37 - 38 hp for play riding is awesome.

i have the yz 250x when more grunt is needed

worst case is making it a 139 cc bike since i dont race.

I’m 205 and had a ‘18 KTM150 and had a blast on it. I wouldn’t want it to be my only bike, but it was fun to ride and had plenty of power.

Im curious what a 144 kit will do to the new one. Did yamaha give us all the "easy power" or is there still some left to gain?

Not sure on a big bore but if the new GYTR claims are anything close to accurate, then it appears there is still some power to be unlocked on the new one, which is going to be nice for people building them up.

Can you elaborate on that gytr info?

I think the Aussie dude in the vid is confused. The deal on the '22 YZ125 is it's basically a '21 engine with the '21 GYTR kit and a long rod already installed. It's a "PRODUCTION" spec GYTR / long rod engine right off the show room floor. The '21 GYTR long rod engine makes about 5+hp more than the old standard engine did. The '22 is a production version, so it's not tuned as tight as the GYTR kit because they have to be able to run on pump gas and such, so there is a little more left to be had. There should be a GYTR CDI box for it soon that will give you the rest of the power.

And no, a long rod does not increase the stoke or increase the CC's of the engine.

You are basically getting a production version of this kit with a long rod.

Mxa put the GYTR kit on the old bike and it was about a 3.25hp gain over the stock bike. And they swapped the PC RV exhaust on and gained another 1hp. Not sure what the power increase is/will be on the '22 but on some of the different overseas media reviews, they seem to say it is a very noticeable difference.

I don't think MXA ran the long rod with the GYTR kit.

wich aussie dude you are talking about?
Dave Willet - who said the GYTR YZ125 has about 5HP more than the stock 22 YZ is from the UK.

The Long Rod YZ was developed by VHM, the do offer a Upgrade Kit for the 05-21 YZ125 wich is good for more usable and peak power
The new YZ engine ist - even if its not visible- a completely nw and different engine- the ignition and clutch cover are similar- thats it.
It ll be very interesting if yamaha does some more fine tuning during the next years, if so- it really is a KTM killer which all the die hard YZ fans where hoping for

Important distinction, as everyone knows: What is considered a “long rod” in most places, is “average” in Australia.

Sorry.

Move along……

And this is their current inventory: There are 2 Yz125's in the list.

Looks legit to me. Phone number on the craigslist page matches their website.

if you're fast, ride in sand or ride fast/HP tracks i think it will be too slow

There is a guy on thumper talk that posted the below jetting. I haven’t tried it yet though.

I went with a NYDF #3 55p 175 main 35pj and 2 turns out and the bike is a complete animal. Bolted on a PC shorty from a 2020 to complete the setup. Not even the same bike I brought home last weekend. Can't wait until we get some pipes to try.

Thanks just browsed thumpertalk.

Seems like the jetting is limiting the engine.

I will have to fine tune from there since im riding over 4500 feet.

Ive never ran factory jetting. Some bikes are okay, but usually there is room for improvement. Its safe spec'd out to not fry the engine.

Did that jetting clean up the flat spot off the bottom, get it on the pipe quicker ? I hv full and 1/2 jet needles ready with the clips on. You can also take a file to them. Cut - shorten pilots and mains or use a washer to get them longer. Great idea to write temp and humidity jetting specs down.

If anyone in the Southeast is having trouble locating a '22 YZ125, Cycle World of Athens has one on the showroom floor. Talk to Stephan! I was gonna get it, but ended up with a KTM instead.

Im thinking about buying one. It would be my first brand new bike. What should I expect to pay OTD, or what have some of you guys paid for one?
