What about Larry Brooks? Keith Bowen or Todd Dehoop? Maybe Bowen won a race I can't remember sorry...Jim Holley?
believe keith had national win in 125's...could be wrong. Todd won east coast 125's title.

Pretty sure I remember Bowen on the cover of Cycle News for a main event SX win. Maybe I'm just dreaming.

Another vote for Byrner- 13 podiums and a truck load of top 5s & 10s in all classes and disciplines.

Dude, he won a national championship. He’s out.

Beat me to it.

Man he came so close.

I dont think Billy Liles ever won a us mx or sx, but dang he made up for it once he got on that 500 and went to europe.

Did magoo ever win stateside?

Brooks won Supercrosses, and Holley never even got on a podium, so they’re not in this conversation.

Just looked at his Vault results, he had 2 overall wins both in 125 MX.

1979 Hangtown, 1980 Saddleback.
Myerscough was super fast, I got to watch him in 79 and 80, and rode with him in 81. He was super fast and had a super clean style. It’s a shame he got sick.

I was fairly young when Myerscough was coming up, but didn’t he first get sick before he turned pro? I thought that he had been sick just as he was getting off minis, then fought back to make it again but when his blood issue returned it was worse and he didn’t recover to the same level.

I remember an MXA story about him destroying all the top guys at Mammoth one year and the story sounded pretty freaking heroic.

Nick Wey never won a race, right?

I think Justin Brayton would be at the top of this list if it wasn't for that pesky Daytona 2018.

Ironically, the 2 guys who arguably top this list go by the nickname “Burner”. Both great humans by all accounts too.

Ah, good catch. I didn't know the one moto win he got netted him an overall.

Wow, looking back through - Bret Metcalfe would have won this handily, but that crazy Southwick 2011 hurricane race he won! I can't believe 10 years later I'm now recognizing that someone besides RV, RD or Reed won an outdoor overall in 2011.

So... Pootjes, Herbertau, Petrov, Teillet, Lieb, Lupino, Guarnieri, Lorieu, Tonkov, Hsu, Bogers, Butron...
Huh?

I was a little young to get to know him when he was on minis. I got to know him a little in 81, he wasn’t racing, but he would ride sometimes with the Suzuki guys, and I rode with them. I know in 81 when he rode, he wasn’t able to ride full motos.

Dude, he won a national championship. He’s out.
It's true (1990 125 AMA National Champ) but if you break it down by class then I would say he's at or close to the top of the list of guys who woulda, coulda, shoulda won a race in a respective class but could never seal the deal.

Cooper was one of the top dudes in a super competitive field from the mid-'80s to mid-'90s. Most notably he nearly had the 1990 Atlanta SX in the bag until the very last lap.

Only reason I know is I thought the same thing and went and looked!!

What a great off season thread.

Brett Metcalfe won an overall at Southwick but has no race wins, right?

Stefan Everts raced 7 times in America and never won so does he count? Tongue

I think you can put Kyle Chisholm on that list with his longevity in the sport without a win.

I'm sure there's some really accomplished riders in the 80/90s without wins that I don't know about.
