Why has Pro Motocross ignored, betrayed and eliminated Women’s MX?

Realistically if you wanted to put a serious effort into achieving this it is going to take 10-15 years and has to start at the grassroots local level. We have one local track that offers a girl's class and it is 9-15. Last race of the season we had 15 girls in the class. At the start of the season I think there were 6-8. To get more girls in the sport I feel you need to start with some dedicated girls classes at the younger level to bring them in and get started. The AMA is not running Girls 9-13 on the national level and only starts at 11. Get them in young and start building a base of girls and new girls in the sport. At the end of the day it just gives us a larger base, new people in the sport, more bike sales and everyone wins.

My daughter races a 65 and is AMA 9. Most races she is lined up with all boys and she has 2-3 other girls that will be there depending on where we are. That can be intimidating trying to come into the sport. She always has a ton of people cheering her on especially when "She's THE girl on the gate" tearing it up with the boys. I've also noticed a different demeanor and attitude when she's on the gate with just girls.

The potential is there but we need to focus on building the base and getting them into the sport!

My post wasn't meant to bash on women racers or their classes. I do think that you are right at your first inference, having a daughter may give you a slightly different perspective, but in the end it comes down to whether or not people will pay money or devote time to watching it as to whether it will succeed.

I actually like watching women's college and WNBA basketball, but I think that is likely because I spent a lot of years traveling with my daughter for her AAU basketball teams. It's different than the men's game, and if you need to be awed by dunks and playing above the rim then it won't be very exciting. But it seems to be a lot more strategic than the men's game and that's something that you develop an appreciation for over time I think.

Same thing with women's soccer and tennis. I would prefer to watch those over the men's game most of the time because the strategies are just different enough to make it more appealing.

For a women's class in MX/SX to succeed, you'd really need to have a pretty decent sized group of women (6-8) who could all win or be within 5-10 seconds of the lead for nearly the whole moto. If you had one woman who was so much faster than the field then it would be too boring and make the others look very bad. The last thing that the women's class should want is someone who is akin to a Jeremy McGrath in his prime type of racer.

If you had close racing, it really wouldn't matter (to me at least) if they are doing the same jumps as the men are. I thoroughly enjoyed, and still would, watching a guy like DeCoster race while never even attempting a triple jump.

I think that the women's classes should try holding their own events, not on a National weekend. Without having the men's classes their to compare it to may be more appealing because you don't have people seeing these insane jumps by the men followed by most of the women's field singling everything. Everything is relative and if the Women's Pro class is the fastest racing of the day, it will seem much more fast and exciting to the spectators.

Once the following grows, then perhaps merge it with some of the 'regular' Nationals.
You said it all in the first and second paragraphs. You like watching women basketball because your daughter played. If your daughter rode moto you’d probably be more into watching them race.

I think that I MAY like it better than some because I watching my daughter play, but she also played volleyball pretty seriously and I am okay if I never watch another volleyball match!!!

She wasn't a soccer or tennis player, either, but I do like the women's game of those every bit as much or more than the men's game.

For whatever reason, I think that the women's sports do better if they stand on their own merits. I do think that hosting a women's championship event by itself would be a far better showcase of their talents (and I am one of the folks who believes that the top women have a LOT of talent) than as a sideshow at an event that is predominantly men.

I am sure that the first few, or maybe a lot more, of them would be tough draws but I think that the interest would grow and be more solid than keeping them as an afterthought on a National weekend.

Real question. Why don’t the women just start their own pro series in the usa? Sounds like there are plenty of women racers and women racing fans in this thread to support their own series, dates, tracks, etc. If there are not enough participants or fans of a stand alone women’s pro series then there’s your answer.

No dog in this fight, but where I'm at there aren't any (or many) girls that race. I was in Mesquite this past New Years and had the pleasure of watching Tayler Allred. She blew my doors off in practice and most of the dudes in the PRO class that weekend and I believe she was/is 16 or 17. You could watch on TV or live all day long, but without any perspective, it's tough to gauge. She's legit fast for a guy or a girl. Lot of talent out there!

I think Jarvis going up against the dudes every week and that gal that tried 450s at southwick are way gnarlier than being subjected to an intermission race.

Nothing is stopping them from racing the dudes. And the ones that do or almost make it are badass.

Ultimately the solution is going back to a two day format, seems to be the consensus for most of these type of threads. I’d love to see it personally

What put the nail in the coffin of WMX was when they let any level of rider get their Pro license in an effort to bolster entries. It made a mockery of the class & was a bit of an insult to the women who were actually fast.
On a local level in the NW it doesn't help that they usually gate women with superminis. That is a bad decision for both classes. Both my boys were fast SM riders and would get sketched out lapping the slower women. The faster women hated battling with little snapperheads who rode deep not wanting to get beat by a female. Slower women riders were intimidated by the faster SM riders flying by them. Lose/lose, IMO.

MX was designed from the ground up as a man's sport. That's just a fact. Big props to those women who ride & IMO they should have their own gate at every event. If they choose to ride a men's class also or solely then more power to them. The difference in build between men & women is similar to the difference in bikes/ages, etc that make up other class distinctions..........

If cost is too much of a factor, cross the border and come race the women's series in Canada. All the moto's are streamed on the FloSports Racing app, so the women get coverage as well.

The series is split in two. West and East. They can race all the rounds, but they can only score points on one of the coasts (whichever one they choose).

The women's series up here used to follow each round of our national series. Some of the women had rides under the big factory tents.

If there's enough interest and women racing all the rounds, maybe the women's series will get back to what it used to be.

US really needs a national amateur series instead of 10 different amateur "Championships". These don't need to coincide with the national races. 1 day program is fine. If there were 8-10 rounds per year that payed towards a championship (65, 85, super mini, 125, 250, 450, womens) that everyone paid attention to, the women's series would have a better place than next to the Pro events. This is how they tried to do it last time there was a wmx championship buy nobody knew to follow along, more importantly it needs the other classes to be run in conjunction to create a buzz for the series.

Seems woman racers get a lot more out of racing off-road these days. GNCC, Worcs, Endurocross, Hare & Hound, Extreme Enduro and National Enduro all have woman Pro class (or equivalent championships) with riders getting support.
They are some of the best in the world as proven at the ISDE with our US Woman’s team taking the win.

I would like to know when most people in this thread that care so much about a Pro Womens series think the championship that was promoted by MX Sports was dissolved...I'd be willing to bet most don't realize how recently they held a series for the women. Albeit they weren't held in conjunction with the Pro MX Nationals, it was still a National Championship by MX Sports.

In Australia we have a series called Women On Wheels which is a series centred around female riders. For every class there is a female only class from 65's right through to vets. That series attracts hundreds of riders from all over the country. My wife races and has said how intimidating it is being on the line with men. Here they combine the womens and vet classes but she says men are just more aggressive than women. When there are enough women at our local club they get their own class and the slower women, my wife included, look a lot more relaxed.

I think for the women to get a class at the pro nationals the schedule would have to go to 2 days. Have amatuers, vets and women one day then the pro's on another day. To me, having a womens class run the same day as the pro's does nothing for womens moto as it highlights the speed difference between them and the men

Actually this whole new gender neutral thing also has cause some stirring the pot when it comes to competing by gender. Way I feel now, the woman that are good enough should just race with the boys. That simple in my opinion.

Factory Honda, Yamaha and Suzuki 250 rides, Pro Red Bull, Rockstar and Monster contracts, TV coverage and mainstream magazine features... If I had a daughter who rode these days, I'd be pretty bummed to see what it has devolved into. I don't see little girls having anyone to look up to or any Championship to strive to win. Godbless Golden, Hodges and whoever is still laying it down for the little girls of the world to look up to.

There was a big push in 2009, 10, 11, 12. There were multiple women with factory rides, TV coverage, racing on the same track on the same day, but as Racer X wrote in the article below when the series was scaled back in 2013, not enough people were interested in it for the level of sponsorship needed to sustain it.

Was 4 years enough time to gain traction at the highest level of American Motocross?

https://racerxonline.com/2013/07/04/redux-the-wmx-dilemma

On another note in gaining the interest of 50% of the population, the Babes in the Dirt events on the west coast are gaining a lot of traction for their female centric weekends of riding and camping and enjoying motorcycles. They have built their effort from the ground up, and see really good attendance which has translated into an increase in female participation in dirtbikes and street bikes. Its a really cool program.

My daughter is 7 now and rides her Stacyc on the kiddie track at MMX while I take turns riding on the old man's track. Moto has been something for us to enjoy together since she was in diapers watching SX and rocking in her baby chair. One day I go to the track and there are 7-8 kids on the kid track and 6 were girls. Girls love riding and everything about it! Girls love this sport but something usually happens along the way. And there would be no reason to steer a girl into a mx career these days, when there is no golden ring to shoot for. Otherwise it's a missed opportunity for the industry.

Geezus, I haven’t had to do this much trimming and clicking in a while.

Some of you that had your stuff clipped need to learn the difference between sharing a constructive thought or opinion, versus just being straight up being jack-wagons. And for the OEMs that got their accounts clipped, you need some real help. Seriously, the high rate of dislikes/downvotes on the majority of the posts that are in here (most got cut) should be self explanatory enough. My email bin was flooded with complaints about this thread.

Thread has turned into a social mirror. Female MXers kick arse with boys: until they reach puberty then significant differences emerge.

I’ve let a ton of Covid and political threads run their course, I’ve yet to clip a thread since coming back, but this one is frustrating.

Actually this whole new gender neutral thing also has cause some stirring the pot when it comes to competing by gender. Way I feel now, the woman that are good enough should just race with the boys. That simple in my opinion.
Couple friends and I joked about "transitioned" men in WMX like that olympic weight lifter or the runners that were cleaning up and taking all the real womens records and trophies.

a totally loose joke but the state the world is in 2021 is a joke in itself lol

So we should get behind woman's mx because why? Just because they're woman? Because it's not fair? Do we also do the rest of the social, feel good stuff. Should they all get trophy's? Should a law be made that promoters must have a class for woman? What about the class for the LGBTQZ. And don't forget the economically depressed, the handicapped, the homeless (i mean un-housed,sorry)

Tickets to a pro moto event are sold to people that want to see the best compete, nothing more. If the best happens to be a woman, great. If not, too bad.

Fire away!
Idk. Probably wont be taking any constructive input from a boomer who doesn't know how to use the words "Woman" and "Women" properly though.

The FIM, with who WMX affiliates, is part of the United Nations and we well know their stance
on sickeningly progressive, wokey social issues.

They would wave a bearded woman through into WMX.

Fortunately I seriously doubt that Pro MX which is a proud real man's sport would, unlike athletics, harbour an individual with so little masculine pride who would want to join the female ranks.

Its a mans sport.

99% of the participants are men.

99% of the viewers are men.

Why cater to the 1% when its only going to lose them money and not entertain the viewers who are there to watch the very best racers in the world.

A lot of ya'll are missing the point on having a separate class for women. Testosterone helps build muscle mass but also affects the way people ride and the risks people take, it makes most guys aggressive.

I don't like racing in dude's classes because I know the chance of my getting punted off the track or landed on by a dude trying to win at $5 plastic trophy go way up. I'm not at a personal level to race A or B class, and at my age I'm good with that.

WNBA won't ever be as big as NBA, but there are a lot of us who watch and follow passionately. I also love watching the best guys in the world race moto, because they compete at a level literally .01% of every average racer will ever hope to get to. That doesn't mean I don't like seeing vets or ladies or kids race, I do. I love motocross, all of it.
