We've all seen photos and read stories of Suicide Mountain and it really was one of the nastiest leaps in Moto History.

I have not seen this particular picture of the flawless David Bailey.

Great angle and if you came up short, you paid the price! Woohoo

More impressive is when they did it on 125s. I wonder how hard it would be on a new 450?

I thought you were talking about "Suicide Hill" from the Winners Take All movie? Haha...

There was an article in MXA not too long ago with some good pictures for reference: https://motocrossactionmag.com/journey-with-us-to-saddleback-park-as-it-is-today/

Three 125 cleared it, Lance Moorewood, Jeff Ward, and Johnny O. Lance did it once I believe, and clipped the top, Jeff Ward and O’mara never made it clean. A few other 125s tried it, but never made it, just not enough HP.

The leap itself wasn’t hard, it was getting the speed to do it. A much harder jump on the track was called the Wedge, that was the hardest jump to date at that time, and scary.

He might be talking about Carlsbad.

The reason Saddleback Park closed was the land owner (The Irvine Company, a massive real-estate company) was tired of being involved in lawsuits. Rumor has it the Irvine Company recently sold the land.

The best line on a 125 was a little left of where this guy is going. If you hit it, you would pre jump just over the crest and carry momentum up the next climb.

Ahhhh the Mystery guy chimes in, did you do it--what was your name again that you won't provide? 🙄

There was some nasty ruts/kickers on the lip of the jump and yea along with the TIGHT corner at the bottom made it tricky to get over if you didn't hit it just right.
I will agree though the Wedge was very dangerous but to claim Suicide Mountain"wasn't that hard to get over" is ludicrous.

Look at that picture of Hannah, he might disagree with you. Cheerful

Straight up the middle and to the right it was rutted out, guys that jumped it went to the left of the ruts.

The turn at the bottom you’re talking about was in 82 and 83, in 84, when everyone started jumping it, there was a bit of a run up to it.

I jumped it on a week day, but I cheated. I cut the track and had a good run at it.

I never claimed the wedge was easy to get over at all, in fact I’ll say it was tricky af because of the drop off before it and the weird way you had to hit it.

If you don’t like my post, scroll on by, it really that easy.

"The turn at the bottom you’re talking about was in 82 and 83"

It was a 90deg rt hander at the bottom of the steep hill and that along with the kickers made it hard. My van was parked right there one yr and not everyone made it look easy like Bailey.

It's not that I don't like your "wasn't that hard" post it's the fact you act like the resident expert on here hiding behind a screen name is what's amusing.

Give us your name for credibility but you refuse to for reasons unknown. 🙄

All I remember looking at it when I was 13 from the bottom was that it appeared damn near vertical up that.
And then you had to go down the same incline. being on an 80 was glad I didn’t have to deal with it.

I’m not an expert, and I have never claimed to be one. As far as my name, not important, I’m an old broken down ex rider that hasn’t even raced since 2013.

I’m not saying it’s an easy jump out of the turn at all, you needed a factory 250, or 125 to do it, only two factory 125s did it at the 84 national. Nobody that I know of jumped it until 84 out of the turn, that was because they moved the turn out in 84.

And by the way, you started a great thread.

I was on the track that day in the 250 class. I survived a ragged suicide double attempt and barely rode away after coming up short. I rolled it the rest of the day and came out 13th, the top finisher out of everyone who paid for their own entry fee and tires.

Not for nothing but I picked up that name in a thread many years ago and also assumed it to be him. I've since been told by someone knowledgeable that claims to have met him that it is not
