What he said except I like Pro Taper EVO bars, my bend is Carmichael but take your pick. Slightly less vibration than with a crossbar? Maybe?

As for the flywheel weight I’ve tried a few and I like e GYTR one best for moto

I’ve been a YZ250 fanatic for many years, and have tried various different things.. I thought it was gonna be too good to be true, internet hype and bullshit, but the Apex head is hands down the best thing I’ve ever done to a YZ250. Makes a substantially larger difference than any exhaust and intake combination. That should be your first step, or at least after you get the suspension dialed in.

Old guys will tell you “gas and tires”

I will say DEP pipe and long silencer.
Honda or KTM front master cylinder and brake line.
Getting the head sorted out.
Wider oem pegs as mentioned

Why the head mod? Is it to make the power delivery more punchy? The last yz250 I rode (2016) felt butter smooth and had a linear power spread similar to but not the same as a 250f

Fixing the squish makes the bike much more consistent and even easier to jet. YZs are notorious for detonating on pump gas, and I ordered my heads to correct this. Differences in combustion dome shape/volume give different flavors of power delivery. The MX dome I received enhanced the stock power delivery, making it more linear and easier to ride… like it filled in some of the dip that some people complain about. As a result, it pulls smoother and stronger than the stock head.

Just have to decide what kind of power delivery you desire and what your fuel requirements are.

+1 on the Apex head. Cleans things up a bit. I would change it when you do your first piston. Stock exhaust is fine....aftermarket don't make that big of a difference (to me anyway). I don't do the flywheel weight....i like it punchy. Are the front disk brakes 270MM stock now? On mine i went with the Galfer SKW front disk to get better performance. Stock wheels are good........

Yes, having the squish corrected should be one of the first things considered. My experiences echo Moto Mofo's, I just had my stock head cut for $55 bucks.

Ringo's hit list is good also.

As others mentioned, every Yz 250 owner needs to check squish and most likely have their head milled. Once that is done, you can add the bolt ons...flywheel weight, reeds, pipe/silencer.

For the 225$ it cost for an apex head, why not just spend the small bit extra and send the cylinder + head to tom morgan?

-Tom Morgan Engine (YZ315 is really good, or even just head to make jetting easier)
-Suspension springs and valving for your weight and ability/riding style
-11oz fly wheel weight
-DEP Pipe (FMF for more low end) and long silencer
-Properly jetted Keihin with C12
-2008 CRF450 front brakes
-Good bar bend

Lots of other things, but the above are my favorites

-Get the brakes sorted
-Springs if you're heavy or fast
-FMF pipe/silencer if you like it torquier off the bottom, PC if like it to hit less and rev more
-Jetting

Oh yeah I forgot- if it’s older upgrade the front brake. At least an oversized rotor and braided line, then possibly a Honda master cylinder.

That’s a good point. And TMR would be my first choice to send a cylinder and head to. But the Apex head modification to a stock head is only $70, if I remember correctly. That’s what I would’ve done, but decided to buy the complete head kit to try different domes, and figure out what I like.

This is a good list. Flywheel weight, I reccomend the GYTR heavy flywheel instead of the set screw steahly style. Boysen reeds work good too. Wider pegs of a later model yz250f or 450f are great. This thumpertalk thread has all the info you need for OEM peg interchangeability.

https://thumpertalk.com/forums/topic/790113-oem-foot-peg-options-for-yo…

I think rekluse is overkill. Flywheel weight reduces stalling at low rpms and the clutch pull on these is already so easy.

The aftermarket renthal fatbar does help a bit with vibration, but mine is still a pain in the ass that put my hand to sleep. I do need to hold on looser (better w/ less death grip) but I do plan on some rubber bar mounts to help more. Rubber bar mounts are no where near as important as the list ringo posted.

who did your cyl. head. Thinking of sending mine to Tom Morgan for a pump gas correction as all I run in pump swill.

I did my stock head myself to get the correct squish, followed with some massaging to the bowl to get most of the volume back that I lost when removing material from the face.
Then I decided to have some cylinder work done, and after 6 months of dealing with the infamous Harris peformance, I finally received my stuff back and it went straight to Tom who had it turned around in a week.

Somebody like apex or Tom morgan is likely doing this with a different profile in the bowl portion, as well as maybe altering the angle of the outer "squish" band. Thus the reason for different domes ect. Plenty of places will do it, seems like the going rate is about 75 bucks.

Ken O Connor Racing did mine, great guy to deal with.

Jetting with the Zook needles is nice also

For motocross do not like flywheel weights. Tried a couple. Bike loses zippy free flowing feel that makes 2 strokes great.

Boyesen Rad valve, FMF, 50:50 VP110:pump, 40:1 927. She rips.
