Want to share a few quick pics of how bad ass my dad is, he will be greatly missed and will leave a gap that can never be filled.

Launching a 100’ triple on his ‘74 CR 250.

Jefferson , one of his favorite races.

Always joked about cleaning all his bikes with a wire brush.

Him and Marty Smith talking about his RC 500!

Thanks for the kind words everyone!
Darrick Newmann
As these posts probably attest, your dad was and remains an icon for the moto universe. I can't possibly imagine the loss you all have experienced. I'm so sorry. Just want you to know that he was admired far and wide in this community and we will all greatly miss the pics of his museum-quality rides and trolling him with 2t v 4t posts. My sincerest condolences .to you and your whole family. Gone way too soon.

RIP Joe. If I remember right we both had the same first race bike, a 78 YZ80. Always hoped to see more of him here again, he was a solid contributor. Sad news

Never met anyone off of here, including Newmann , but I remember seeing his posts of his house/shop and I thought “man, this guy has it figured out.”

RIP, and condolences to his family.

I loved seeing pictures of his bikes and setups, and also seeing how far over the line in the sand he would tip-toe around and then just hop right over it in Non-Moto before GuyB had to drop the hammer. While death is never the outcome any of us want, I hope family and friends can find comfort that he was able to live quite the life and touch so many in a positive way in the motocross world. RIP Newmann.

So sad to read this. Didn’t know him, just through his posts. My thoughts are with his family.

We both started on little GTMX 80 Yamaha’s but we managed a deal with our parents if we could come up with half the money for new bikes they would pay the other half. Early Fall 1977 we are all sitting in Golden Triangle Yamaha in Beaumont, TX and he test rides a 1978 YZ80 and me a YZ100 on the side street of the store. Not sure if it was the same day or later in the week we are at the Suzuki shop, Byar’s Suzuki, and check out the same. Back to the Yamaha shop and we buy the YZ’s. At some point we both sent odd our suspension to White Brothers and paid COD back then when the reworked suspension came back. Joe added a DG seat foam kit and cover later to it. The 1978 YZ80 had notoriously weak foot peg mounts and he broke one of them. Yamaha had a brace kit ready for them and they welded it back up. Basically the 1979 YZ 80 frame was the same and they had the reinforced brackets from the factory. Anyway, we rode the wheels off those bikes. He loved that YZ 80.

RIP Newmann. I,m shocked. I haven’t been on here much lately. A couple bad surgeries and back to Chicago to work. I,m delivering to Larado Texas now. Newmann,s post of pics of land marks, bridges was great. I was trying to figure out where he was going to pick up a bike. Then I see the like new 07 cr125 , my dream bike. I had 3 cr125,s stolen. His post gave me hope that there is like new cr125,s out there. 11 th truck in line to unload, I told him no I don’t wait. I give ya 20 bucks and I go to the front. He says no, I say 40 bucks. He says no, get in line. At least I tried, sad that I hv to hustle my own money to try to make money.

Joe was a stand up guy. He helped me build my Mugan kitted bike. He even sent me an NOS Intake to have repopped without really knowing me at the time. A great builder for sure and all around good guy His bikes have been featured quite a bit. Steve Wise rode his replica during the nationals when they were down in Texas. I believe he sold that and another to one of the Fox brothers. RIP

I'm late to the thread...and wish the very best, and peaceful hearts to Joes family. I had more than a few private message discussions with him when I took my first stab at restoring a couple of vintage Husqvarna Mag 250's a few years ago...and started one on a '73 Elsinore. His knowledge far surpassed mine about technical things, and was a huge help to me. He never brushed me off as a PIA, but was always quick to offer help...and had a great sense of humor. The fact that we knew a lot of the same people down in Texas helped as well. The fact that he and Don Rainey are close was pretty cool too...and I always wanted to attend one of the vintage races he promoted. All in all, although I never met Joe face to face, I counted him a friend and appreciated his generosity and patience. He was a great guy.

RIP, Joe.
