This guy did.

You know you've cased it hard when your heels leave an indentation!

The jump is arguably the most exciting spectacle/obstacle in the entire series and somehow they feel it'd be more exciting for the fans to have 3 guys jumping it vs guys side by side over it battling for position and 1 or 2 overzealous 250 guys giving it a send. Dear Redbud, quit fucking with that jump.

Not ro mention how lame it is when they don't jump it. I'm going to get flamed for this but I think the track is overdue for some changes.
No, you’re right. This jump needs to be hittable by a 450 from the inside line at the minimum. You get landed on on that jump, it’s all over. I hope yesterday was just a miscalculation and will be addressed from here on out.

I thought his season ended right there.

Took a lot of balls to pull the pin again,

I’ve done it a few times. Never crashed. One time broke both bones in my lower leg. Another time I bent my triple clamp which changed the rake of the front forks.

Let's just say that I never have had the ability to case it as hard as Kenny did. I certainly have the ability to crash that hard in simple conditions, so I'm going stay away from any "saving it" fantasies for me.

He did it a few times in the first moto, then switched to the inside line. Never did it the 2nd moto...stuck to the inside and I only saw it done twice from the inside (Ples and Roczen).

I like the idea of making it more difficult like it used to be and a bit of a separator, but do agree with others saying that they probably made it too difficult.

Kenny is a beast pure and simple. It was so impressive to see him continue to race-dude just shook it off and even jumped it again! No one can question this guy's heart ever again. By far the most impressive ride of the day, especially after that hit. It was brutal. I hope he wins this thing.

Nowhere near KR, but I spun the rear wheel coming up to about a 60 foot double the first lap of practice in an outdoor arenacross. I should’ve stayed in it, but I panicked and shut off. Landed halfway up the landing. Never crashed but compression fractured my right arm, then it buckled and tore everything to shit. Was set to pick up my new bike that week. Kept getting extended by the doc, so I spent 12 weeks in various casts staring at my new 96 CR250...

As an added bonus I had a Toyota 5 speed pickup at the time, so with the original cast (up to armpit, elbow 90 degrees) I had to duck below my dash on freeway on-ramps to catch 5th gear lol...

Also, just reminded myself of how fearless of jumping I was when I first started racing. Riding a 96 CR 125 in the beginner class in 2004, there was a 75 foot triple at the track. I didnt have enough power/corner speed to clear it, but I liked jumping, and having come off of an XR 80 jumping to flat on random dirt mounds/hills, ibwas used to taking a hard landing. So I just jumped as far as I could each lap. That usually meant facing the landing each time, but I was strong enough to not get blown up. If I remember correctly the track staff had to tell me to stop trying to jump it because it scared them watching me bounce off of the landing each lap. Since then I have gained a healthy fear of casing jumps after having it go wrong a few times...

Look where he went from though, way, way outside. KR was trying to clear it from a relatively inside line. I think that was the issue, was the race lines didn't allow for a proper run, in some cases. And going way outside really didn't save that much time. AP seemed to be finding the balance of going 1 line over from Kenny (usually) and having enough to get over it without going way wide.

To the original post, I wonder how much Factory suspension kept Kenny from wadding it up? That's such a massive hit. I've flat landed from overshooting on much smaller jumps and felt my whole body jarred. I can't even imagine what that would've felt like.

Ah fair point. I haven’t watched the race yet. Either way, that jump is massive!

Ya once you watch, I'd be curious to see what you think. They had some aerial shots so you could really see the turn and the lines that lead up to it. To me, it just looked like the way the turn is, it just made it a choice to go probably wider than you'd want to go and be able and clear it. And most guys chose to stay inside. When KR was casing, he was on the inside rut and would fade out to bounce off of the "wall" that built up. AP and DF seemed to have the best line. Everyone else just stayed inside and doubled, at least from what I saw.

I wonder how much Ken's detuned for smooth riding Honda had to do with it. He was lacking a lot of power.

Yamahas were doing it at will.

I thought it was a right of passage in moto to have a scar across your chin from casing a jump.

No Yamaha that I saw attempted to do what Kenny did (make the leap from the inside).

Did anyone see how / why Roczen later crashed in the corner after the leap? From the tv it looked like (you can only see the last part of the crash) he might have bounced from the landing to braking bumbs?

Agree. Kind of a weird line though because he would go inside and when he would try to run up to do the leap, the bike faded all the way to the right, bounced off of that little wall. I could see taking that inside and not trying to do the jump but it was making me nervous seeing him go inside and then still go for it. I feel like that fading to the right was killing his momentum, since he couldn't square it up. I liked AP's approach. It seemed to be the best middle ground without totally leaving him wide open to get passed. Although in 1 of his battles, I think he had to cut back to the left after someone closed him off? Can't remember who it was.

wrong....

the development of 450s has led to this...bigger and bigger jumps were a natural progression(look at glen helen lately)...

the only way to separate the 450s when everyone has this much power is to have a jump as stupid-big as the leap. Otherwise it's supercross where everyone jumps everything, even lappers, and it's a parade half the time. Back in the 90s the jump was just as crazy in perspective, everyone was just on two strokes...

This jump was unsafe, but you didn't have to jump it...rider choice, eli did it the least and landed on the podium...

bottom line is that a separator is what the greats took advantage of...ask RC and Stew...

In my experience good hold up from your suspension helps with casing jumps. His suspension definitely has the perfect setting haha.
