Alpinestars tech 10 wearing through after short period.

Edited Date/Time 6/21/2021 9:26am
Hi I've had 2 pairs of AS tech 10s the lxiii & the new style. Both have worn through on the right ankle. On the newer ones it's just under the black rubber pad on the right ankle. This happened after 6 to 8 months, riding 3 to 4 times a month. Has anyone else had this problem. I'm even thinking it could be the rear reservoir mountings on the bike that are causing it as its happened on the 2 different crf 250s I've had.

I had two pairs of the new tech tens both get a hole in the left sole within 3 months of riding and had pretty bad wear on both sides too, love the new boots but don’t wanna mess with replacing them all the time even though I get a good deal on them, so I got sg12 again and I don’t like them as much fit and feel wise but had them a month and they literally look brand new still everywhere.

Well that's the next thing if it's the boots I was looking at the sg12s.

I just rode the Rip to Cabo last month. I wore the New Tech 10s. I left them in Cabo. I can’t even begin to tell ya how destroyed the soles were. Not just one place but most of the foot-bed from just in front of the ball of the foot all the way to the very back of the arch/forward heel.

I left them with Ramon, a dude that rides/guides/helps out on The Rip and I gave him the info for getting them resoled.

Here’s a pic of where I last saw my -last- pair of A-Stars…Grinning

As the other guy said, I switched from tech 10s to sg12 for the same reason. Sg12 have held up way better.

Are you running grip tape on your frame?

No mate just the alloy frame. When I look the damage is on the same level as the rear brake reservoir.

Ahh yeah I missed that on your first post. I have seen that happen before. I have two pairs of the new tech 10s and both have been very durable. My newest ones have the updated soles too and they still look great with about 15 hours on them now.

Check these guys out. They put the Sg12 sole onto the A-Star boots.

I had a fellow member shoot me this so figured I’d pay it forward. Give them a call, worst anyone can say is no, right?

Doesn’t that just essentially make them Tech 8’s with a small style change?

There’s already been a couple threads on this. The current tech 10 soles are junk. The boots themselves are great. This was mine after three months of riding

I dont beat stuff nearly as much as you guys do, but....

My time with Tech10s is why i went back to SG10.

I find the SG10 to have a roomier toe-box than the SG12.

Maybe not the sexiest option, but SG10s plain work and last.

I'm thinking sg12s once these are finally buggered then.

Yeah I’m bummed I didn’t give the SG12’s a try. They seem super solid and built well. Might have to sell these soon but I might be stuck with them

The soles on my '21 Tech 10s were completely worn through after 10 hours. I got them the same time as my new bike so it was easy to keep track of the time on them.

Alpinestars are smart. They make the most comfortable boot when you try it on in the store so you buy them. After minimal hours they start to fall apart so you go to the store and try on every other boot until you decide the alpinestars are the most comfortable so you buy them again. This keeps happening until you've finally had enough and buy a boot that isn't as comfortable but actually lasts. BTW, I love my Forma boots

Mine wore through the rubber pad on the ankle in 6.5hrs but I’m running grip tape on my frame guards. Soles have very minimal wear..Those look to be catching on your rear brake for sure.

The wear is nothing to be concerned about. Keep running them and you’ll be fine. Mine are wayyy worse and have been running them without issues. Astars will put new heat shields on for a reasonable price. There is a trade off between comfort/style and durability. The sg12s feel like wood clogs in comparison.

I wear SG 12's and really like them. Had SG 10's for years. I've always worn Gaerne.

Comfort isn't a priority for me. Although I wouldn't say they're unconfortable at all.

Protection, support and durability are what I care about the most when I'm riding. Gaerne gives me all that in spades.
They are clunky to walk around in, but if I need comfort I'll simply take them off and put on my running shoes.

Best boots on the market in my opinion.

Contact alpinestars and they might replace or repair for free. I did this a few years back and they actually sent me a new pair of boots. Not the exact same problem, but still worth a try.

This, except I'll add they are very smart.

Tech 7s seem to hold up better, also you know you can send your boots in to get resoled.

So I had the same issue years back and switched. I have sidi crossfire’s and SG12’s now, I think I’d give the edge to the sidi’s. More comfortable, better feel. My feet are also wide as fuck, if that’s an issue for you too.

Maybe StevenMX will share his experience. New Tech 10s and have a hole on right boot on the inside of the foot. He thinks from the kick starting. Bummer either way

I switched to sidi atojo from tech 10s because the soles were smoked in under 6 months.

Sidis soles lasting much longer and I can replace them myself for $30.

Worst boot on the market. Sidi or SG12's are the ticket.

AStars have always sucked from a durability/longevity perspective. I switched to Gaerne about 10 years ago and with I had done it 10 years earlier. The low lifespan of the AStar soles is comical.

Tech 10’s, when I tried them on new at the dealership felt like I threw 2 chunks of a 2X4 down where my ankle joint goes in the boot then slipped them on. Never rode in em, I always thought my SG12’s were comfy as house slippers

You’re not wrong…. I’ve been running A Stars for almost
20 years but I’m starting to get fed up. It sucks because the rest of the boot is actually really good. Forma? Is that a brand? Never heard of it
