SSR Bikes any good?

Edited Date/Time 1/8/2021 7:46pm
Looking at getting a pit bike for a while now, but seems like you can't find any of the good OEM ones for sale anywhere(at least not at a reasonable price) due to everybody buying them up this past year. I've looked into the SSR pitters that a dealer close to me has a ton of in stock, but wondered if anybody out there has had good luck with them or not. Mainly the 110's or 125's, but any SSR feedback in general would be sweet. Good or bad about the bike, please let me know!

They were junk 10 years ago. Can’t say for sure now but they were so crappy 10 years ago I’d be surprised if they were any different.

So every dealer are sold out of pit bike and he has a ton of them... That should speak for itself. I personally wouldn't approach them closer than 50 feet

A dealer offered me a test ride on one. The first one I tried would die on you at about 50% throttle (carb problem) and the second one was stuck in one gear. They were both brand new bikes. I’d pass.

You can tell just by seeing one in person that they are super cheap. But my buddy had one and we beat the shit out of it for a few years and it held up okay. It was a 110 with a clutch. Bought it new in 2016 for 900 bucks and just sold it 2 months ago for $600.

I had 2. Son and I rode crap out of them. We could smoke a highly mod klx110. But, when they break, trash can!

Can't find a Pitster Pro? The SSR full size bikes are Honda copies and the dealer here in AZ says they are holding up pretty well. The 300 has decent ride and long term reviews. But these are still cheap bikes.

I'd pass on an SSR and see if there's any piranha or YCFs available in your area.

As far as the super-cheap Chinese bikes go, they are among the better ones. But that's still not "good".

SlipDog built one and for the money it seemed pretyy good.
I beleive the geometry makes them better for big folks & not so great for kids (Front-End geometry was funky for the little ones as I recall)...but...like anything-else...

I don't have one... but wasn't there an ssr thread a while back where most people were saying they weren't terrible? Isn't rc a spokesmen for ssr or some other dirt cheap pit bike line?

If you going to put your kid on one it is fine for a learner bike, but as an adult pit bike they will break.

No. He did a promo for a YCF Daytona, which is the opposite: a moderately expensive ($1000 more than a fuel-injected Honda), high end pitbike.

Anyone have a YCF? They don't look that much different from Pitster or SSR's from their online pics.

Are Pitsters or SSRs available with Daytona engines? I think Pitster may have some models that are somewhat comparable.

Really more interested in how they hold up. I'm a dealer and my experience with the pit bikes has not been great. If I sell them to moto guys that know what's up with them then it works out ok. Most of those customers fall into the green category and there are issues. The carbs are hit and miss and the details like chain adjusters are just poorly designed. No one can seem to design a functioning air box either. That's a market screaming for someone to step up and supply well designed product. TTR's and CRF's are hard to find because dealers make so little off them that they don't stock many. I have been trying to get KTM interested in beginner/pit bikes for years but they just don't seem to want to go there.

Check out the Orion's. $1500 for RXB150 mid size and $2000 for a RXB 250 full sized both street legal and delivered assembled. You can't be lazy the 1st few rides, tighten and locktite everything. The quirks are easily worked through, FB pages are abundant with details. Nibbi carb replacement is expected, stock is trash.

Adults and kids riding the wheels off of my 150, and it is a gas on single track, keeps up with big bikes no problem. Suspension has been fine for what it is. Best dirt biking value I've ever seen. In stock.

We have sold a bunch of SSRs and recently became YCF dealers. We are waiting on our first batch of YCF and Piranhas.

The SSRs are decent bikes, especially if maintained properly. We start the bike and dump the cheap break in oil out before it leaves the shop. We tell our customers to check over all the bolts constantly. We have customers that are going through tires, chains, sprockets, etc regularly so the bikes are lasting a good while. We even sold a SSR250 and the customer has gotten great use out of it so far. We do not try to claim they are as good as the Japanese bikes, like any product basically you get what you pay for....

I kept a 189 to ride around in the pits. I am a big man and it carries me around no problem. My son rides the snot out of it on our full size MX track and jumps most of the mid size doubles. It has actually been pretty dang bullet proof, other than having to replace the rear wheel because I forgot to check the spokes on schedule....

We are looking forward to the YCF and Piranha line, they are more expensive than the SSR. We have a 190 Piranha already and know the quality is nice and the power is amazing on these little engines!!!

I think the 170TX would be the only SSR I’d consider, it’s a decently built bike over their other offerings. Tighten every single bolt on the thing, though.

In the spring lock down I needed a pit bike for my son to ride around the house but klx/crf 110s were virtually impossible to find . I bought one of these new for 1100$ . He beat the hell out of it and I recently sold it for 1000$. Bike was great, and held up pretty good.
Pro”s- cheap, quality was ok, great for the kid to learn to work on it himself
Cons- terrible carb ( had to replace), suspension really stiff( spring rates for adults, not a 10 year old)
Funny, I thought I’d have a hard time selling it as it’s Chinese. Nope, sold in one day at full asking price.
I really wanted this instead but was sold out at the time. Bike is pretty cool looking with electric start

Those bikes are terrible. My neighbor got one to try and get his kids into it and to play around on. Blew up after a day. Do not buy these bikes.

We have an orion 50cc honda clone, my brother got it from a storage shed confiscation. Put a honda carb on it and it's been abused for 5 years now without anything other than oil and tires.

My brother took on SSR this Fall after doing his research. They seem to one of the better Chinese brands. He sells Kaw?Polarisl/TM and he needed more bikes to sell.

I've rode a couple and thought they ran pretty good. Actually pretty fast for what they are.
So far he's sold quite a few and they've been holding up. The price is good for kids trying to get into dirtbikes for the first time.Hopefully they'll upgrade to a better brand at some point and continue to ride.

I think they fill a void in the market, affordable entry level bikes. But that said, they're no where near the quality of the major brands.

I just bought the same bike for my son as a Christmas present. What carb did you replace it with? We haven't ridden it much yet due to bad weather.

I built a SSR B2 Pro about 8 years ago. It has held up pretty well with regular maintenance. I have a 12/14 dirt wheel combo and a 10/10 for our mini supermoto track. Good luck!

I have had one for about 7 years now. 125 with manual clutch. It has held up surprisingly well, but it is definitely a cheap made bike. shortly after getting it I swapped tires, bars, chain and put a better filter on it. You get what you pay for, and for $620 the one I have has actually exceeded my expectations. Looking for something cheap to rip around the yard on occasionally go for it but dont expect it to be Japanese manufacture quality.

Orion RXB 150 XL that I tried to post previously. $1600 in mine after a Nibbi carb upgrade. Able to license, oil cooler, e-start and springs that are adult capable. 100 miles so far and digging the grin it puts on your face. Much more upgraded than most brands, decent plastic and seat (KTM 85 if I remember right?)

I call it a Chonda.
