Gear rant:

This shit always cracks me up. Like, really Shane (and others).... you’re so cheap you can’t buy some off the shelf gear? You’re obviously not on that team anymore. Like hell, call one of the man friends and ask for a free set for offseason testing.

There has to be a bunnnnnch of gear companies that would throw a top-ish caliber guy a $150 dollar set of gear

Maybe I’m just spiteful - but if I’m leaving a team I’m not going to continue promoting them. If I leave a company that I work for, I’ll spend my own money on workwear (polos, hats, coats) etc before I EVER wear the merch I have in the closet to an interview.

Meh I don't really see the issue. He probably has a bunch of fresh gear that will never see the light of day, might as well get some use out of it while you can.

When the opener comes I'm sure he'll have the proper gear with the proper logos, where ever he ends up.

Rule #1 for a pro rider in the usa is never spend $1 on bike, gear, parts, tools, truck, etc. Been this way for many years

Yeah, my brother just reminded me of the infamous Pro line of “I couldn’t ride while I was unsigned because I didn’t have a bike”.......

Like, hey MF’er... it’s not that hard. Fucking invest in yourself.

Why buy a set when you’ll have a new gear sponsor with a new ride? You don’t stay wealthy by wasting money

I get it. A gear set that looked pretty good on the Yamaha is looking terrible on a Honda. MCR changed the numbers so they did their part. They even put a 12 on the stand. Look good, do good, Shane.

Why does it matter? He’s got so much free shit why not wear it?? Once he signs a deal he’s going to get more free shit so why spend money on gear when you have a ton of free stuff?

They printer his bike stand and numbers just for one day testing or he did make contract all ready?

I can’t believe this guy used his Kawi gear set during this Honda test. Honda even put 259 on the bike! Put some effort in and buy an off the shelf jersey. Who does this guy think he is?

So if he is testing with MCR, did anyone officially leave the team? Did anyone sign somewhere else? Hill? Friese? Stewart?

Gotta disagree on this one. Why buy brand new gear when chances are it will only be worn a handful of times at most? Granted, he has plenty of money to do so, but why bother when you have a ton of gear already?

Why waste money on new gear? Why waste the old gear? I hope he gives it all away to people that can use it. Its not like he is home crying and tearing up all the pictures and throwing out all clothes.

Serious question : Top-ish rider gets off a factory level team (Mcelrath, savatgy, Wilson, barcia before Yamaha) and goes for a privateer effort and asks for funding.

Im guessing that they have quite a large collection of gear sets that they wont/cant use anymore due to logos, teams and whatnot, why arent any of these riders selling their gear sets signed for 500+$?
I mean they could easily scrape up 10-20 sets from their 2+ years at that team and use that to fund their next effort to a degree? I mean 5-10k doesent make or break a season for these guys but i believe that a lot of fans would love to have a signed pro set of gear, and get the feeling that they are helping their favourite rider and actually getting something for their money?

Would this stamp them as poor asking for a handout or do they toss away all these sets of gear after a ride or two?

So in your eyes, the other option is to go buy a set of gear and promote a different brand for free?

Makes sense. 🙄

It's business for them not ego, he ain't promoting he's just testing. No public no TV no social media just a pic someone took when he doesn't have gear sponsor. if there is gear that wants to work with him they now know (if they didn't before) that he doesn't have anything.

There should be a Gear forum, too many people concerned about gear like a 15 yo teenager.

Hey man, all rants aren’t 100% thought out - that’s the fun of them, they’re messy.

I’m not married to this thought, just a hot, undeveloped take.

Its kinda looked down on to do that kind of thing because it keeps money away from those exact sponsors who gave you the gear and the industry as a whole. Their job is to get people to buy the gear not give it away. Thats why you see collectors, sponsors, kids and girlfriends getting it mostly.

None of these guys toss gear. Gear goes to sponsors, family, friends, charities for auctions etc and obviously some will be kept for the trophy room.

No point in going out and dropping a new set of gear for a few hours of testing.
