It simple- Trim the fat, both sides. I’m sure the promoters org structure is top heavy as most corporate orgs are and on the teams side, money spent on “pit presence” and hospitality needs a trim and have the money spent on a bigger team of riders. People will still visit the pits, stand inl line for posters and autographs whether there is a semi with an awning and fake grass or a box van with an ez up and shop mat. Too much money wasted on nonsense is the choice over paying showmen.

One thing to mention about the rigs many of the teams operate within. It allows the area and materials needed to put together the activation and sponsorship materials needed to pull in the big bucks that pay these riders (speaking of private teams such as FC, Star, JGR). Box vans don’t solve any of this. At the size of a Geico Honda, you’d need five or six of those things on the road every week to take of their needs.

Overkill... I am sure a sponsor would rather see another bike with their name on it in the main or night show over a having a place to sit and eat loose meat sandwiches with their entire family under the “tent”. The fluffing should happen on the track is all I’m saying.

Pretty sure them sandwiches don’t sit too well when their only rider crashes, gets hurt, or DNF’s
It worked in the past until there was the dream that we would mimic nascar and attract outside sponsors and casual fans and after all these years, not much has changed other than “pit presence” and the majority of people that go to the races are the same people that have always went to the races. Any additional sponsorships that are coming in are getting eaten up by the fluff and not making down to the people that deserve it.

Basically what you are saying is that the pits are more important than the race, and that’s a shame!

At some point, the riders are going to have to leverage something. Otherwise nothing will ever change.

The pulpmx interview with Chris Canning this past week was pretty interesting. He cleaned up at the Maine Event and Baja Brawl in consecutive weekends and made way more money than he would have busting his balls to race the nationals.

A lot of local series still offer 150%-200% payout in 250A and 450A. Maybe we will soon get to a point where all the guys that aren't on factory/salary rides just stop showing up to the nationals and start to make their money at the local level. It would be good for the sport at a grassroots level, pump money into the local moto community, and force the promotors to take a good hard look at what a series would be like with half empty gates.

Maybe that would change some things. Maybe it wouldn't. That's just my thought on the matter.
There would be a lot less lappers if that happened. in SX it wouldn’t make a huge difference because most of the guys in the main are on big teams anyways. I don’t want to see that happen though because I could see that really hurting or being the end of SX and MX at the professional level. None of us want to see that happen.

Either way, none of the top riders will ever step up to Feld or the AMA.

So you mean to say that the money coming into the sport, including the money from the advertisers, can’t be restructured in a way that the guy who gets last place in the LCQ can earn enough to cover his costs to get to the race, the wear and tear on his machines, and maybe have a few extra bucks to buy some lunch?

I disagree.

There’s more money funneling through this sport than people think and industry guys know it but they can’t rock the ship because they’ll lose their career. There are a few greedy players at the top of this industry and they do a good job masking themselves.

So, what “ deep state” is running moto, what are their names, and what do they do with the million$ they steal from privateers?

You can post the documents here of course.
Can’t tell you all the names but let’s start with NBC. Lots of advertising dollars to fill those ad slots from major companies like Monster, Geico, Toyota, Kawasaki, etc. not to mention the NBC Sports subscription we all pay for to watch racing. Not a penny trickles down to the racers.

I’m not saying last place needs to be a millionaire. I am saying that he deserves to cover his cost and have a little to show for it. Ask Robbie Marshall, Jason Brooks and Chris Canning. These are all talented New England guys who have given the sport a try and have had top 20 finishes at various nationals but they lost their shirt doing it. The money is there but the racers haven’t come together to demand change. You only see a social post every once in a while from a frustrated privateer and all it is is a puff of smoke that goes away. Privateers need to come together like a wildfire.

What kind of statement would it make if only the contractually obligated showed up to qualify and race? I think a pretty big one.

Any chance the reason behind Dungey giving up on the "Geico" team was because of Mr. Grondahl? Personality wise it seems like those two are miles apart.

Vitards: The sport needs to take care of the privateers. They are the backbone of the sport.

Also Vitards: Once these backmarkers get lapped they should be black flagged, I'm sick of them effecting the race by getting in the way of the stars.

No he couldn’t afford it. His $8mill net worth wasn’t enough to support his lifestyle through the remainder of his life. Coffee sales ain’t cutting it and that’s why you’ll see him back on the gate aboard a Honda in 2021. Needs more $$$ quick!

I wish there was an easy way to total up how many of these threads there have been on Motodrive and Vital MX.

I'm behind it in theory, but while all this Covid stuff is going on? It's probably not the time to think you're going to get major change done.
Maybe the Covid time is the perfect time for this conversation. Don't get me wrong Guy, I live and breath this sport. I look up to the pioneers that have brought moto into it's new age. But, why can't everyone sit down and start to put together a real plan??

Imagine if the sport was thought out cradle to grave?

1. What if we have a better incubator for amateurs that didn't try to hand pick someone at 13 and watch them fail year one as a pro?

2. What if our pro athletes got start money instead of having to pay to race? What if they got some of the TV money (where the real money is) Who owns the TV rights??

3. What if we had a plan for our beloved athletes when they get hurt? We ALLLLL give money to them when something bad goes wrong. What if there was actually a system for support provided by the organizations or a partnering insurance company? That is why Geico came into the sport in the first place. I would love to get my health insurance from the same company that insures pro motocross riders. Has anyone called Aetna or Harvard Pilgrim for a meeting?

4. What if we had a place to go for our athletes when they are done in the premier class? Imagine a place where James, Ricky, Jeremy, Chad, Kdub, Poto felt comfortable enough to go ride for their fans? Buydos proving it is possible to make money with our retirees. I know I paid and will pay again to watch them ride!

Tough situation, on one hand this is just entertainment and not a direct necessary contributor to much. On the other hand the organizations and promoters shouldn't be getting rich off of these athletes while they struggle to make it to the next race. Maybe a base needs to be set. I'm am for getting paid according to results but it should be possible for the riders to afford to make the whole circuit. Tough one for sure.

It worked in the past? In what way?

If we’re talking about the box van versus semi thing, race trailers weren’t common back then and are now very viable. Offer a larger pit footprint and the ability to haul and offer more services to the teams.

Riders used to make way less money, OEMs were covering more of the total costs, and mechanics had to be on the road themselves all year to drive said vans.

Sadly, in some cases social media engagement, Business to business relationships and activation/data collection is more important than the races themselves. They do go hand in hand though, but the stuff happening outside of the track is typically bringing in more of the money, these other items are required to pay for the guys to go racing. NASCAR by example...it’s in a similar situation. Brands aren’t just paying to see a car go around in circles with their names on it, they’re paying for all the other assets the teams provide.

The world has changed a lot when it comes to sports marketing. Brands have so much more data coming in to prove if they’re getting return on investment. They can see how many dollars they spend versus gain on a car running around with their logo, versus some ads on google, and what type of return a team offers them with a business to business relationship they create for the brand.

From time to time, you get marketing guys at companys with big budgets that wanna just come in and throw some big cash around. But it’s primarily because they like the sport they’re spending in. Take example, you get Marketing guy A, he loves moto. Gets his company to spend a million dollars for little return or activation just to brand rider X. He gets to pal around, live the Dream a little bit etc. two or three years later he gets a kid offer from another company and leaves, or the company just decides to go in a new direction and lets him go. Enter marketing guy B, he has no clue about Moto and quickly looks over the spend. Quickly proves to the bosses that they aren’t getting much ROI out of it and convinced them golf is where they need to be (he likes golf and wants to hang with Tiger).

Hopper’s “source” for his latest videos is Grondahl. It’s insanely obvious.

Ryan isn’t out of money, he has other motivations for returning.

I wasn’t going to bring that up, but I for one am very surprised that a Businessman like Mr Grondahl would want to alienate sponsors by trying that.

Motocross is not political, I try to escape what’s going on in our country today by enjoying moto, and I don’t want any politics one way or the other in my face when I watch racing.

What main sponsor will sign on to Factory Connection Honda if there is a political message one way or the other?

You may want to go back and look at all Mike's posts regarding this. He is pointing out some hypocrisy on Geico's part. I agree with ML, it is wildly entertaining!

Saw it shared on Facebook along with a photo of Jerry Robin in Make Motocross Great Again gear and graphics. Lots of privateers out there frustrated and struggling - many of which who've gotten injured and the sport has done nothing to help them. It's sad when you look at it deeper than the broadcasted show.

Justin Barcia won $12,000 for winning A1 this year and Adam Enticknap won $1070.00 for placing last in the LCQ. What about the 250 riders? I don't know why anyone would try to compete knowing the costs associated with this level of racing. Denny Hamlin won over $2,000,000 for winning the Daytona 500... I get NASCAR is bigger but this is ridiculous. Risk everything - get nothing.

Isn't the AMA suppose to protect the riders? Apparently rape is an AMA Value Add Evil

Glad to see someone is making some noise on this issue!!

I wish they could charge one extra dollar per ticket, put that in a fund to help seriously injured racers. Some of the racers get hurt and will not be able to earn any income and I really wish AMA/Feld could do a lot more for them. when you suffer a catastrophic injury at a SX/MX race you are quickly forgotten. That just doesn’t feel right at all.

If I'm being honest, I have a hard time getting behind this when Jerry Robin is the face of it. Seems like the dude has had plenty of support to travel the country and race SX and MX for quite a few years now but hasn't even finished half the races.

Jerry coulda probably made $100k more in his "career" if he could just finish 90% of the races he lines up for.

These guys aren't driving $40k sprinters, hauling around $10k bikes, burning through $1,000s in parts and mods because they are poor. VERY, VERY few of them are doing it on their own, most of them are getting checks stroked from Dad and Mom or someone else working a real job to keep them chasing their dream. How bad can it be?

If Feld profits were split 50/50 with riders all 22 bikes in the main event would be factory rides and any local pro with a valid license could get a free bike
If the 250 class wasn't split into 2 coasts all 22 bikes in both class mains would be factory bikes.

If we are making motocross great AGAIN, when exactly was the last place lcq guy making more than just scraping by?

Feld should offer health insurance to the riders the same way American universities do to students and staff. While motocross is high risk, the pool of riders is still young and likely won't need expensive cancer treatments, for example. So, I bet Feld could negotiate a decent rate for riders. Feld should also subsidize these rates.

Jerry is one of the poorest kids out there and rode an 86 cr250 in the ams because they couldnt afford a bike. I agree there needs to be way more money for the racers but for every privateer that boycotts there is 100 kids in the stands that would race that night for free and the promoters know this and the top guys are not going to mess up what they get so its a conundrum with no easy answer as it always has been. I believe rider merchandise should be allowed to be sold by racers at races. There are no name youtube kids making fortunes off merch. That would be a great start.

ML is right.

Many times you guys get all mad and up in arms that you're not getting the real story or some shit, and here's ML who decided in a massive stroke of brilliance to start a motocross team during the season that'll have Cooties-virus, murder hornets, California is on fire, there's five hurricanes in the atlantic, Louisiana will get hit five times by hurricanes in 2020 and to top it all off, it's an election year.....Good job, Michael

LOL

Sorry....

But he's been in the shit, had to fund a team, what sponsors want and what it takes...and you shit on the guy, or you just dismiss his input.

I can tell you, he's not wrong.

The things described to do, box vans, I hardly know any local racers that use box vans now, they all have toy haulers or toy hauler trailers, but using box vans is like 20-30 years ago at this point, isn't it?

Things are so way different now with the sponsor VIP areas in the pit areas, the catering, need the warm up stationary bike/rower/climber for the rider, how you carry that in a box van with everything else?

Ok, the cost of one year of racing on the ama pro level. Go with fairly frugal. Fuel, food, entrys, lodging. At least a couple bikes. The bike(s) upkeap and mods are very expensive. Just to get a 15th, to be that good, would cost lots of 1000's. Just that 1 years cost is through the roof. Lots of rich guys, or 'helped' guys, are on the gate, but really don't care about greatness. They just enjoy the 'show', and attractiveness. If only that poor kid around the corner had money, he would kill it.

Motorsports just aren't for poor kids. That's just the way it is. But maybe that is the point you were trying to make?

Also, don't get me wrong, seriously, but of all those people in the stands, the 40,000 people at say A1, they're not all racers or even "core fans," they don't give a shit about Mike Akaydin or Nick Schmidt (no offense to them) but chances are, a majority of the fans in the stands have no idea who they are....so if they strike, no one cares.

Why are the top 8 guys (random number) going to risk all their shit for the guy in the LCQ?

What ever happened to "I got mine, you get yours. Work harder," type of thinking?

Also, ask this....Who are the riders striking against? Feld? Riders don't work for Feld, they work for the teams.

Everyone wants to pay everyone more, just no one knows where it'll come from.

Seems to me, not long ago, everyone was praising Feld for ponying up the cash and the venue, all out of their pockets to pay for it, to complete the SX series and here we are a few short weeks later, ready to toss Feld to the wolves.

Feld has lost BILLIONS of dollars, and y'all wanna roast 'em and feed 'em to the dogs.

I don't get it

See the forest through the trees.

Box van was used for simplicity

VIP areas. There are suites for that

Warm up machines. Whats wrong with a few burpees or jumping jacks.

Getting back to the basics of motorcycle racing and direct sponsorships to riders would be a breath of fresh air.

That is all

Riders don't hang out in suites. Makes meet and greets tough.

Riders need warm up machines because they''re highly specialized athletes today, unlike the cigarette smoking, beer drinking, party all night racers of yesteryear....

Same for auto racing and other sports....your athletes are finely tuned machines, just like the bikes, and they need to be set and ready, as they see fit, at race time, in order for the investors to get maximum output.

I’m seeing through the forest known as 2020, you’re looking through the forest known as 1985. I do challenge you to present some math. Come up with the figures required to operate four box vans for a four rider team versus one semi over the course of ten seasons. When starting a team I went through a ton of different scenarios to end up where I did. The costs would surprise you.
