Maybe Ken Roczen? The way he blows by people on the first lap outdoors and even in supercross. Magoo was pretty good but he was crashing then passing. Maybe Larocco when he was getting terrible starts outdoors and then blitzing the field. Tomac on a charge? Bubba? Hannah? Herlings? You need to have some bad starts to be the man at passing. Smile

Bubba, he was just going so much faster than everyone else it was ridicules. Watching made it feel like why don't everyone else shift up a gear. He was in a league of his own especially on a 125

I cannot think of a single person better at coming through the pack than James Stewart. He was the fastest man in the track, and always on the ground, until he wasn’t.

Mike Larocco was such a poor starter, he may have passed more riders in his career than anyone.

Stew had the easiest time passing people because he was going so much faster, so technically that makes him probably the best passer. Roczen gets my vote for passing people when he isn't going that much faster than the guys he is passing. In a class where tenths separate the riders and everyone basically does all the same rhythms etc, Roczen is really good and getting through the pack early in these motos.

Not "the best of all time", but probably one of the best batch of passes in an event:

Antonio Cairoli at the Arco De Trento / Trentino MXGP a few seasons ago. He damned near served up every high end rider , in the same corner, lap after lap. The man was on a mission. It was fantastic to watch.

It’s James and it’s not even close. He did what Kenny did Millville 2016 on the regular, often in the first lap, and made RC and CR who were good at it look ordinary compared.

Roczen seems to have a very hard time getting around Webb and Eli, so I’m not sure he could be considered the greatest passer. You’d have to fact check me, but I’d guess that his best results happen when he starts up front. Stewart was an incredible passer. Although, an argument could be made for Eli since he doesn’t always get the greatest starts and has no issue passing half the field to get up front. when he’s on, he can make any line the fastest line.

As of late: I gotta go with Tomac. When he get's in that "Raging Bull Mode"? He makes EVERYONE-ELSE look slow.

Sometimes it annoys the hell outta me...like when I'm thinking someone-else is gonna win...then Eli comes along and "poof". Hell, Cooper, Roczen and even Anderson can pull that off every now-n-then, too

Any of the sx/mx racers who have won multiple championships.

That said, McGrath would be my pick. He did most of his passes within the first 5 laps and then managed the race to the checkered flag.

Not to downplay Stew's passing ability, but I only counted 3 guys passed in the whoops. Still awesome, but not 10. Unless that's the wrong moto.

JS7 did some unbelievable things on a bike, especially the smokers. I remember one of the Nationals when he was dragging-bar, riding sidesaddle on the left side of the bike I was like: Yeah, I will never be that good at riding.

RV2 was also really good at taking alternate lines and still being faster. I imagine Villo would be pretty good at flat track, I remember him being really aggressive on the inside.

RC and Tomac outdoors, just going mach-9 through all the wide open sections.

James typically got bad starts on his 125 and would manage to creatively carve his way through the pack and usually be leading within a few laps. Nobody else has been able to do it in the way that he did it. James, end of discussion.

What James did to Chad at Dilla qualifies him to podium this conversation on it's own lol. In his 125 days when he'd get a rare bad start he would just shred through the field like a man possessed. Bubba is your winner here.
