It was the end of 2000. Like I said, I had lost my KTM ride. I was like any other dumb kid. Worked my ass off to get on a good team (Motoworld of El Cajon 97-99) then had flashes of good speed in ‘99 and got the KTM ride. Then, had a couple crashes testing to get ready for 2000. Had to have two shoulder surgeries and honestly, just didn’t work hard enough training wise. So at the end of 2000 I was a broke kid without a ride and needed some cash, desperately. I went into Motoworld (it was my local shop) to buy some race gas and on the door was a sign to be an extra in this movie for $80 a day. It was filing at my home track. I called the number. Had to send in a picture of my bike and gear 🤦🏼♂️ and then they ok’d me.
I rolled into the track and it was still almost dark, I recognized a lot of people. Even The Dogger was there! The track was all done up, banners and all. It was prepped so good too. It was cool rolling in and seeing the whole movie crew setting up.
When I got out of my truck, I had parked near the stunt crew (unbeknown to me). I recognized Rich Taylor, Dave Castillo, Clay Cullen, Oakley Lehman, Stanton Barrett, Shane Trittler and a few others and larked by them. They were pumped to see me and I was to see them, you see they knew me from the Moto scene and a couple said, “dude you are doing this too?” To which I replied, “yeah!” i thought it was odd, as I knew these guys lived up in the Valley and it was a far drive for $80 / day. Anyways, someone mentioned we should go grab some breakfast. I was stoked! We get free breakfast??? So, we walk as a group into this tent and I see this serious spread of breakfast, it looked so good. Fresh fruit, pancakes, eggs, bacon, sausage, a juicer it was like a hotel buffet on steroids. I thought damn... I’m not spending my money in the morning on food and shit... I’m going to try to get some of this to go back to my apartment! Lol. About this time, before I could even get a plate. this younger girl with a clipboard and a headset walks up and asks if we are the stunt crew to which the guys said yes. She had a list and started to check us off, telling us to grab some breakfast and then there was a stunt meeting right after with David Barrett, the Stunt Coordinator. I was stoked. You see David Barrett was kind of this folklore to me. This myth and mammoth MX legend I had never met. Backing this story up 10 years or so. I was an 80 novice rider at Mammoth for my MX for my first time and during the 125cc pro race David Barrett has actually hole shot and was leading the main. (Could have been a heat race, but for stories sake let’s say it was the main) he had an open face helmet. I thought it was so cool this guy was wearing an open face a few years after nobody wore them anymore. He was wide open, a bit out of control and I will never forget Larry Naston screaming his name for a few laps. Amongst us 80 riders the legend grew that David, only rode in Mammoth and that his grandpa owned the track. It truly was a David vs. Goliath story as I believe even MC was in the race.
Ok, so back to it.... this girl is checking off names and halfway or so through the list she gets to me and can’t find my name. A few of the guys are explaining to her who I am and I should be on the list. I’m not. So then someone asks me “Did Barrett hire you”? To which I replied, “I’m not sure, I saw a sign in the door at the dealership to make $80 a day and.....”. I saw the look in their eyes, I was in the wrong place. They felt instantly bad for me and I had no idea why. The girl with the clipboard, she didn’t feel bad. She loudly proclaimed “you are an extra, not a stunt player and this is not your tent, you need to be over there with the extras”. I was cool with it. I had no idea what it meant. So, I go over the the “extras” tent and found out quickly why it was a big deal. Our tent had bread and oatmeal to eat. I think a couple bottles of orange juice. That’s it. The Taj Mahal tent was for the cast and crew. It was loaded, ours was not. It was here I met my boss. Who indeed had my name on his list. Oh well. Here we go.
After a couple hours they get set up to film the first scene of the day, which was an acting scene at sign up. My new boss asked for a couple of us to grab our bikes and walk them in the background. I volunteer. I grab my bike and my helmet, I’m all geared up and I coast down hill to the place where they are filming. Here is where I learned the first valuable lesson in the industry. ALWAYS THINK AHEAD! I was instructed, to lush my bike behind the actors as they did their dialogue and walked up to the sign up. I had a mark, when the actors hit that mark, I started to push. When we went to record the first time, I put my chest protector on, helmet, gloves and goggles. I was track ready. They called action and I pushed. I heard cut and was told to go “back to one”. Easy. However, after a take or two they said my chain was making news and asked me to take it off. I did. 🤦🏼♂️. We did this shot at least 10 times. No lie, I was tired. Pushing my bike back and forth in full gear. Then they had moved the camera and we did it again 10 times, then move the cameras and then again 10 times.... oh man it was exhausting. I learned that I had “established” myself in full gear, with my helmet on and goggles. So I had to wear all that in every take. We worked on that scene all morning until lunch.
Lunch came and I heard rumblings we were going to get to ride after lunch. The track looked prime. I went to the extras tent for some peanut butter and jelly or maybe some top ramen and the stunt team went to the Taj Mahal tent. I kept my eye on them. When they came out and got geared up, so did I. I race to get all my stuff on and no lie, grabbed my bike out it in gear and IT HAD NO CHAIN ON IT!!!! I forgot I took it off. I threw my gloves off as the guys started to ride and feverishly worked to get my chain on. I got it in quickly got my bike started and my “new boss” intercepted me just as I put my bike in gear. “Extras don’t get to ride today” he says. “You aren’t insured”. I’m arguing back and forth and my good friend now, Clay Cullen (who is with stunts and knows of me) rides up and tells my boss it’s ok I can ride, while they are talking and before I can be stopped, I’m off.
I get in the track and it’s my home track. I’ve ridden here since I was 5 and it was prime. They prepped it so good. I start just ripping laps on my 125. The actors, producers, director... they are all standing in the middle of the track. This is the first time they are seeing any action that is going to be in their movie and I am going ham. I noticed someone giving me the hang loose sign and waving me on from the group of “special people” and it made me stoked I was being noticed. we rode for 20 or so minutes. When we got back to the trucks, we had the epic bench racing session we all do. The stunt guys and I, the local riders .... it made the boring morning not seem so bad. We were laughing and telling stories of throwing it flat. It was a rad riding session. About that time a small group of people walk up to me. Steve Boyum who was the director, a producer (forget the name) and David Barrett, who I had never met.
David introduces himself and I am literally a fan, so I am happy to meet him. It turns out, he was the one giving me the hang loose and the windmill to get me going faster out there. He tells me how rad it was to see me shredding and pumps me up. He introduces the director and the others and then has a few laughs at my morning performance and the breakfast debacle. We all laughed. He dove right into the racing thing and asked what I was doing the next year. I told him I sucked the year before and didn’t have anything in stone. He was a racer... he understood. So then, the director asks me if I want to be in the movie. I reminded him I already was. Didn’t he see me, pushing my bike all morning? They all laughed. They said no more pushing my bike. They said, I would join the stunt team. My pay would go from $80 / day to a minimum of $675 / day. I almost shIt my pants. They then told me I got to eat at the Taj Mahal tent. WHAT!?!?!? It just kept getting better. I had a minimum of 6 weeks of this work. It went until mid December. I was reeling. I really was. I was so broke, had no idea how to line up at A1, couldn’t pay my bills let alone race and this was happening.
Of course, I agreed. David pulled me aside and said hey, there is just one thing.... “Because of your size and stature, we are going to have you double the lead ACTRESS.” I told him, “I will ride in high heels, right now, right here for this”. He laughed and sent me to the wardrobe and then, hair and make up.
You should have seen my buddies faces when I showed up in my wig and fingernails painted for arm pump.....
On another note- I have been so incredibly lucky / blessed, whatever you want to call it in my racing career and work career. I have so many of these type of stories and circumstances where I’ve come from a snot nosed kid in the first MotoXXX movie to doing this amazing career. I have bought the equipment and thought of doing a storytelling podcast. The stories come out so much better verbally then writing.. I don’t know. Sometimes I think it would be cool to do, sometimes I think people wouldn’t listen)
Follow @covert_camera_vehicles on IG for some cool work photos now
That was a great read!
PLEASE do some podcasts!
We common fans can't get enough of this stuff!
If Regis checks back in he can explain it.
Covert Cameras on IG is cool, really want to trip out, look him up on IMDB. Regis has been busy post MX life.
Also, best goon riding I ever saw was Regis at the Barona Mini Nats a million years ago. No one has ever topped what I saw that day, not even Ronnie Mac.
Now that pretty much all movie production has pretty much shut down maybe Vital could add a "Stories with Uncle Andy" section???
Regis, Thanks for sharing. That was a great story.
Pit Row
That was for Transformers 2! Worked all night in Long Beach and then drove to Chula Vista for the race. (Once again I was the girl!!!
I also remember that mini nationals. Pretty sure I did a whole Moto, not sure what instigated it, but I went full bore for sure.
Yeah, I was supposed to be in Italy doing a New Netflix movie and then straight to Malta for Jurassic World 3, we built a bitchen camera bike and for that. I got a hold of Steve Matthes and we got a bunch of people involved. So, look for us to launch the video soon!!!!
The family had signed their house up for movie use. I met the family on set. They were blown away there was a small MX track around there house. They had moved the family into a hotel and rented the house for the duration of the movie.
Rear wheel bonk off a parked car. FINALLY being a guy. this was a Kawasaki 250f, dresses up to look like a police bike!
I just watched the movie with my kids. My daughter was cringing half the time haha.
Why was the Dad such a dick? And the French rider, not cool. Roosting MC, Lamson and Travis was the girls first mistake. That track looked awesome.
