The championship is determined by the points leader at the end of the 17 round schedule. If they only race 10 of those 17, should they award #1 plates and the championship title to the current points leader for 250 West, 250 East and the 450 class?
250 West: 6 / 10 races completed (60%)
250 East: 4 / 9 races completed (44%)
450: 10 / 17 races completed (59%)
If so, where do you draw the line? If they only raced 3 out of 17 races, would you still hand out championship titles?

Figured I'd drop this in here too....just for the fun of it....
Everyone racing has had an equal opportunity to collect points. I don't understand why anyone thinks that 17 is some magic number of rounds necessary to name a champion. Why don't we run every single weekend and have a 52-race championship? What if 17 rounds seems like the riders haven't completed a full season? Do the last 20 years of Supercross titles need to have asterisks next to them?
The men who have raced themselves into the points lead at the time the races are concluded are the winners. If the last several races are cancelled, they are not part of the equation.
and to finish the series at Daytona with it being Tomacs track, calling the series short while he holds a small lead.. I wouldn't go calling Tomac a champion for it.
Im a tomac fan and want him to win it just as bad as anyone.. but not on these terms. he would be the most controversial SX champion an nothing to celebrate about.
Trying to think of a comparison... If the NFL had to cancel its playoff games and Superbowl, would you claim the team with the most wins at that time the Superbowl Champion? Or would there just be no Superbowl champs that year because the season was canceled and incomplete?
I wonder if there's a rule about this already in place? "If the championship series is canceled early due to unforeseen circumstances, the points leader at that time will be deemed champion" or something along those lines where the precedent has already been set and the riders should know that at any given weekend the series could wrap early.

I like both Tomac and Kenny (actually all riders)....I will admit that I wanted Kenny to win this year though.
If it was Roczen, Webb, Barcia etc, my feelings would be the same.....it's not a title for anyone.
That's an example of how this just doesn't compare.
It’s definitely a huge disappointment if it ends this way as I’m sure we all wanted to see how it would have played out.
Would be interesting if they gave out Championships, but it's past the half-way point so that might factor in.
Also, Barcia dropped to 4th in season points too at Daytona. Doesn't that have implications for his Yamaha contract / extension / bonus?
In the words of the late, great Nicky Hayden "That's why we race on Sunday". Because you never know what could happen.
If no other race happens this year the undeniable facts are Eli Tomac, Dylan Ferrandis, and Chase Sexton have the most points across the races run. They showed up each Sunday and did what was needed to be in the hot seat. 5 races. 10 races. 17 races. Doesn't matter. When the 'season ended', not matter the reason, those are the riders that had amassed the most points over their peers.
If Eli was awarded the title now I’m ok with that.
He won the most races
He has been the points leader for 3 rounds now
He is clearly the fastest person on the track

Do you think the record books will not mention what went down? Asterisks are used for footnotes. It’s not criticism, it’s about facts. All the bullshit talk about asterisks in this place, and now folks get pissy when one is required.
This could have been Tomac’s year, and now he’s champ with no celebration. Instead of big party in May, SX will be long past. It will be like the season never happened. I feel bad for the guy. He was riding great and I bet he wanted to prove to himself and everyone that he could bring it home.
No one can tell me that if the riders knew it was only going to be 10 rounds, that the points would look the same. Riders constantly make decisions when to push it and when to settle, depending on how close in points they are and how many rounds are left.
Or “the goal is top five every race”?
With a shorter schedule, strategies may have changed at any given race. A rider may have gone for that one extra pass if he knew the ‘long’ season was going to be a ‘short’ season.
Post a reply to: If the remainder of the SX races are canceled, do you still award 250 & 450 champions?
