Bernard Kerr: World Cup DH racer wants to race SX

It is cool what he is trying to do. I just hope he doesn't get too mentally shook up with all the other bikes around him, ride over his head, and crash his brains out.

talent on 2 wheels is talent on 2 wheels. I do feel like it usually works better the other way around though....moto guys catch on to mtb better/faster than mtb guys catch onto moto. While alot of it is transferable its a lot easier to go from wrestling 230lbs to 30lbs than it is 30 to 230. It worked out good for Aaron gwin anyway..

I find it’s the opposite. Tons of MTB guys I know are now riding. One of my buddies picked up a DRZ two seasons ago and first week of riding I could not shake him in the woods. He is now beating everyone in the plus 40 Expert class for hare scramble.

there is also quite a bit more that transfers from mtb to harescrambles then there is from mtb to mx/sx not to mention we are talking about a 40 plus expert local harescramble level compared to lining up with 20 of the fittest and fastest sx racers in the world. Intensity is higher, stakes are higher, riders stay closer together, its just not the same. Not saying the dude cant do it. Its just not the same as youre talking about
He isnt trying to line up with the worlds top 20 SX racers. He is trying to go out in a C group timed practice session and hopefully post a time that gets him in the top 40. That means the night show. Thats the bet he has. That would mean he has won the bet.

After that we can all fear for his life. So good to read so many folk have so much care for our fellow man.

The more, the merrier. If he gets some new people interested in Supercross then he is cool by me.

My comment was pretty general in pointing out that MTB guys transition to dirt bikes very easily. No where was I comparing my anecdotal experience to the person we are talking about on the OP.

touche. I hadnt thought about the whole c class timed practice. I jumped straight to heat races. my bad. Im not worried for the dude, i hope he makes it. i think it would be awesome if he did. Hes got some work to do but i see no reason why he couldnt make it to the heats just judging off the 2 local guys that have done it from here a couple times.

Maybe saying he has a lack of respect for the sport is a bit harsh. I do find it interesting that some of the pros are helping him out.

Why is everybody so worked up? If he qualifies he qualifies. If he dies he dies.

I think the answer could be put simply as: people are worked up because this is Vital

He looks like a mid pack local A rider, but I'm sure he'll progress some by A1. Obviously has skills. Good luck to him.

Its nothing to do with money , and everything to do with insurance, and knowing the hoops i had to jump through , back when i did it, it isnt something you just 'do'.

I was trying to say he has no chance without being a dick. Not knocking him for trying. This all reminds me of Keefer attempting Nationals last year.

I doubt he will be the slowest rider there. But as I said before, if he has never raced a motorcycle ever before and has only done downhill... how will he do in traffic?

I hope he kills it and enjoys living his life to the very fullest.

I've been told pretty reliably that he has a license sorted for A1.

I’m British and the only thing I know about Bernard Kerr is his starring role in a UK documentary called “can’t pay, we’ll take it away!”

Apparently he didn’t pay some bills... bit embarrassing.. good luck to him though, I’ll get following his progress!

How can you say starring roll ? He was one of many cases that get shown each episode. Do you remember the officers remarking on what a nice guy he was.

Pity you dont get the back story of a rip off Mercedes garage charging for something they didn`t fix. Pity you dont get the story of him trying to work with the garage to sort the problem whilst being overseas racing and out of the UK but that doesn`t make for great sensational TV. If the TV told the boring story it would have been pretty embarrassing for the garage.

Follow him on Instagram His life is a riot of fun. Somehow he juggles managing the Pivot Factory Racing MTB team and riding at the level he does and take on this crazy dream of making the night show at A1.

He is a fun guy to be around. He enjoys life.

Does anyone have any confirmation that he didn't actually do the necessary steps to get his pro license? I think some of the guys posting above are misinformed on the process, I'm pretty sure they wouldnt let someone just show up and race. Is it possible he went through and raced some futures races and noone talked about it? Just a thought.

Probably so.

I think that the folks who are inferring that he doesn't respect the sport are at least somewhat influenced by him talking about just showing up and racing. I can see where that might come off as painting the sport as unorganized and insignificant to some.

I always thought they (AMA)(FELD)(FIM) should have a Standard SX track, Have the top 10 450 and 250 guy's compete and make lap times.

Then develop a percentage over that average time that has to be met more than once maybe lets say twice in a session and one other time.

Then decide if the rider is skilled enough to advance and be allowed on the track with qualified riders.
25 years ago when the licenses were cheap and a lot of guys were showing up they warned up black flagging you if you looked like you didnt belong. some very fast A level riders can look sketchy on a rutty, soft sx track.

Someone should ask Gwin how he would feel about Dungey racing a World Cup after a month of practice. Although I think Dungey would be humble enough not to even try.

This is true.

I believe Aaron was the number 1 all american DH after 6 months of getting into it. He rode 20 inch before that and moto even before that

Not hard at all to believe

Big difference is DH is a solo time trial down the course, so going low is embarrassing and dangerous to the rider, but not the other riders.

I’m just getting started on this forum and I’ve got to say there sure are a lot of whiny bitches on here!!

If the dude can get a pro license, AND make his way through qualifying into the night show he would be faster then 99.9% of you guys on this forum. Palmer did it, and he made it to the main. He did like one lap then pulled off so not to get in anyone’s way. But he still made a supercross main. Give the guy a break and maybe even some support.
