Old school air filter oiling.

Curious if anyone still uses the old pre mix oil method of oiling the filter up, or has the convenience of the spray can now dominate ?

Old school? That's the way I've always done it, guess I'm old school. I just pour the oil on the filter, massage it through make sure there are no dry spots, squeeze out the excess. I just thought everyone did it that way still.

I’ve never used spray oil. I always thought that you couldn’t get enough oil through the filter for the dusty conditions in Aus.

I only use No Toil and pour it on. I do see a lot of the younger guys using spray, tired it and did not feel it was enough protection....

Clean, submerge in an oil bath, squeeze out excess, dry and install.

Saved/cleaned out one of those party size ice cream plastic containers. Perfect size for dipping a filter into for oiling. Lid seals good too for storage.

I just take a big ziplock bag, pour oil in, put filter in and squeeze & move it around until it is well oiled. Take out of the bag & install.

I use spray because on the Polaris Ranger and my Grizzly 660 air filter (ProFilter?), there's a metal cage that prevents squeezing. Since I have it on hand already (ranch buys it...) I use it on the dirt bikes. You can spray as much as you want and saturate that sucker if you're man enough to hold the spray valve down that long.

Too much oil clogs, though, so if it's really dusty (CO hare scramble, for instance) I use a Twin Air over filter and lightly oil that. Then I spray a little more oil on the outside of the air filter. Then most of the oil in the inside of the actual filter. My thinking is to gradually filter dirt out- like an aquifer- rather that oil the heck out of the first layer and create a messy clog there. I like the spray for that because I can regulate how much oil goes where.

I got no issue with the dip and squeeze, though. If that works for you, great.

I used the spray can stuff once and felt like it wasn't doing enough. Like the filter felt dry and not tacky, and that was using the Motorex air filter oil. Using No Toil Evolution oil and that stuff cleans out so easy and so easy to apply that I'll probably never buy anything but that. I use to clean all my air filters with gas and now that I use the No Toil stuff I can bring it in to the house and clean them in the kitchen without making a mess.

I poke a little hole in the seal and pour lines all over the filter. Work it in and squeeze it out. Minimal mess doing it this way.

Twin Air Liquid Power has been my main go to. I used PJ1 spray at first, but then switched. I've never had dirt in my air boot using the liquid power. I did try No-toil once and hated it.

I use Maxima spray. If you feel like there isn't enough oil getting through with spray, wouldn't you just spray more? I still saturate the filter and squeeze it to ensure even distribution. Same result with a bit less mess, as far as I can tell. Keep a spare clean filter oiled and in a ziplock bag ready to go!

Motor oil dunk and squeeze since the 1970's. Once a year cleaning whether it needs it or not..

Same with my oil changes, once a year. You can never be too careful..

Been spraying for 30+ years. It’s easy and never had a single issue !

You can avoid all this and buy DT1 filters and send them back to have cleaned and oiled and they ship them back ton you ready to go. No brainer...

I used to work at Bel-Ray. We all used the pour-on type in our motorcycles. Why?

-Spray-on kinds use a thinner to get the oil to flow through the nozzle of the aerosol can. It evaporates after application. Contrary to some old beliefs, this thinner is not detrimental to the foam. However, it takes up a lot of space in the can and you get less filter oil product for your money.
-It is ALWAYS recommended that you massage the oil into all the pores of the filter. Sort of negates the convenience of spraying in the first place. Use rubber gloves, because that stuff is nasty!

Unless you are spraying hardly anything, a spray type is completely fine. I've only ever used spray and have destroyed exactly zero intake valves this way.

I use both pour on and spray types. Usually pour it on then rub it into the filter. If I use the spray, I spray a lot and then rub that into the filter as well.

I use Maxima FFT and Maxima Fab1

I have tried the spray and it never got sticky and seeped out of the filter and into the bottom of the air box,I always squeeze out the excess,did I use too much or was it an inferior brand,I don't know
But I never had that problem doing it the old way. So the old way for me

Tried PJ1 and used a whole can before I felt comfortable putting it in my bike. Bel ray filter oil for me.

This is perhaps the stickiest shit known to man. I tried it once and it turned into a damn disaster. I threw it away after I finally got the bottle pried from my hands.

I think I’ll try this next time. I usually use a pair of disposable gloves..kinda funny, I’ve been re-using the same gloves and the NoToil oil has almost seemed to rubberize them

I have 2 1 gallon Spackle buckets.

One has kerosene/diesel fuel to rinse the oil and dirt off before washing with Palmolive dishwashing soap and 2nd bucket with Belray filter oil in it.

Dip filter in oil bucket squeeze excess oil back in bucket. Put lid back on and done
