Anyone know about how many miles top guys will run on average per day/week? I realize they cycle a shitload, but I never really hear stats on how much they run. Are they just sprinting for 35 minutes straight a few times a week or what?

Always been curious as well. Doesn’t seem like they run much. Lots of wear and tear on the knees and joints from all the riding they do. Tons of mileage running is prob not a good idea for them. When Roczen was recovering a while back he posted a 3 mile run he did. Averaged like a 6:08/mile pace. Fast pace but not long by any means. Not sure if that was part of his program or him just getting some extra work in.

Interesting for sure. One would think the lower portion of the body in moto takes enough beating during the week and weekend to be out pounding pavement or even jogging on a treadmill. Cycling seems have been the answer for cardio. Very rare you hear of guys running anymore. Wonder if the 3 miles was just a boost to get the heart rate up to jump into another exercise stage. Wouldn’t be an endurance builder for someone like him.

Cycling and light weight training is a big part of their training. Not too much running though. And they also use the row machine a lot

I race outdoors and honestly the last thing I would wanna do on a Monday is run. After the motos normally Sunday is just a relaxing day (normally a travel day) and on Monday I’ll go back to work (6am-7pm) then when I get off I’ll normally cycle for about an hour and half and do 30-35 miles. Tuesday I’m in the gym after work with stationary bike ride at the end, Wednesday I cycle for an hour then go the the gym, Thursday I’ll work then normally travel to the races. My program sucks because I can’t ride during the week at all but unfortunately I have to make money to get to the next race. I’m not top rider but this is what my program looks like a little bit

If they prefer running, it used to be a 10k a day. Fri-Sunday no running

my wife and i did a trial of f-45 training classes. There a hit/cardio work out. my heart rate has been 178 and my average for a 45 min session was 155 or so. I did a 20 min run on the treadmill sat at 6.5 and i wasn't winded one bit. Im actually quite surprised on how much 2 weeks did on my cardio. We are signing up tomorrow and im going to see what 6 months of 5 days of week does.

Your in the wrong sport if your doing those miles in that time.

Running is hard on knees that have already taken their fair share of shit, is why.

Bailey and O'mara used to say running was the best training for moto. I know things change but it worked for them.

I use to run 3 miles twice a day to and from work and I could do it in 20 minutes. That was a good pace and pretty easy to do when I was young and in shape.

When you put 1-2 hours of 85%-95% hr each day on the bike why would you not work on strength building and injury prevention the most? Yes running and cycling are great. Fitness plans for professionals are far more complex than just a couple of things. Also light weight training? LOL!! Given the reps you need to always pick up as much weight as physically possible while maintaining proper form or you’re just pissing in the wind!

E-Mtb's are the go now. Fun, easy on the joints for recovery and skill building and a work out if you put in.

Fun is the important factor. Being fit is not what draws young guys and girls to motocross, it's something we find out later, for better or worse. Some go with it and become successful and some don't.

Running is too hard on the knees and bones for moto (for me anyway, shin splint).

I am not Aldon Baker so take my advice with grain of salt.

When it comes to boot camp i prefer:
- running same distance as Christophe Pourcel in his prime (0 km a day)
- diet like 2017 RC4
- bike training like Ronnie Mac

I thought Reed said he still runs. Likes it better because he can get a good workout in a shorter amount of time.

5 miles in 45 min used to be a good standard that some of the top 125 guys were running.

I used to run 5 miles of hilly road 2-3 days a week in the early spring before heavy riding started, then as riding/racing started I would transition to cycling to give my body a rest....I don’t run anymore due to the wear & tear, it’s all cycling, rower & swimming during riding season then weight work in the off season...as you get older you have to think about preservation of your body, riding is very high impact. I hated running, the only good part of it was when it’s over...

If your joints can handle it I find it easier to maintain my target moto heart rate while running than cycling and I’m done in 30 minutes. I think cycling can be great for recovering or a few long cardio sessions. When I trained with Ryno we’d hammer a bike ride on Wednesday’s for about 50 minutes as hard as we could go.

why run when you can get the same or better cardio training, without blowing out your already blown out knees on a road bike? not enough functioning ACL,MCLs out there to be running all week long and still be able to ride

Monday: recovery day

Tuesday 5:00am pool session 1-2 hours - various drills and sprint speed work.
7:00pm 10-15 mile run

Wednesday 5:00am: bike trainer 1-1.5 hr/intervals
evening: planks and light weights/upper body

Thursday 5:00am: 2hr pool session/long swim
7:00pm: 15 mile run

Friday 5:00am: bike trainer 1 hr
evening - off

Saturday 8:00am: long bike ride 50-80 miles, followed by a brick run of 3-5 miles (to teach yourself how to run on tired legs). Usually got home around 2 or 3 pm. Recovery food and then naptime.

Sunday: long run, normally in the morning: 15-20 miles

By the time I was ready for the full Ironman, I was able to swim 3 miles (full IM distance is only 2.4). I did several century rides on the bike. I could run a marathon (26.2 miles) on a sunday in 4 hours, although I only did that twice during training - it adds a LOT of stress/recovery going those extra 6 miles.

That was for triathlon 70.3 and 140.6 training. 1.2mi swim/56mi bike/13.1mi run and 2.4/112/26.2 for the full,respectively.

Back when I raced MX I would run a couple of 5-7 miles plus a 10 mi, 3x a week plus riding on the weekends. That was easy LOL - compared to the above! If you learn to run correctly and wear the right shoes, running moderately actually can HELP your knee joints by providing stimulation.

You claimed cycling times are faster than pros time trial runs in the Tour de France.

You might want to rethink that story.

It all depends on the knees. Road Bike is less pounding and still works on leg muscle strength and cardio. But I still say let your knees dictate.

He did not say "VERY AVERAGE". He said he does 30 miles on the the bike in an hour.....which is 100% bull caca. He's not doing anything remotely close to that. If he could, he would be on TV blowing everyone away in the Tour de France.

20mph for an athlete is automatically a lie? That’s not boasting at all I’d say. When I was riding 100+ miles a week 20 mph avg was what I shot for (and attained comfortably) and I was far from a ”pro”.

The best thing about running was that I was not normally in constant fear of being hit by cars or trucks.

He said 1.5 hours 30-35 miles. That's 20-23 mph average. Much better than "average" but nothing close to pro.

That, and I can walk right out my front door and run for 30-35 minutes and get a pretty good workout. On a road bike it seems like I'm just getting warmed up and breaking a sweat at 30-35 minutes. I hate running and road bikes, but they are a necessary evil.
