It is that time of the year. What are your favorite survival tips for riding in the heat?

Focus on hydration at least 24 hours before I ride

I have always tinted my truck / van windows and gotten a windshield blocker, so I can crank the AC between motos and cool down faster

Electrolyte powders with: sodium, potassium, chloride, bicarbonate, calcium, and phosphate

Towels in the ice chest to put on the neck after motos

Whats helped me recently in addition to what you listed, is trying to stay in warmer temps more often to stay acclimated. For example, dont have your house AC on all the time and your car cranked to ice cold. Being a little warm more often helps with the shock of the heat/extreme temp swing.

X100 on hydration. I was having bad leg cramps and symptoms of heat exhaustion a couple months ago until i improved on that area.

Those are all great ideas, but I just don't ride in the summer anymore. I've got 12 acres to cut/maintain and don't have time anyway. This is the second summer I've decided not to ride. I can't exactly predict when my 1987 CR rebuild project will be done, but I will take her for a few laps when she is - regardless of the month.

Few things that have helped me are be in decent shape, cardio wise. Make sure you eat something. Drink lots of water and cool off with fans in between motos. It seems more miserable sitting around in the heat/humidity than it does riding in it.

I have used this setup for the last 15 years. when I am done sitting in front of it I use it to dry my helmet.

Hydrate 72 hours before the race, not 24.
Make sure not to cool your body down too much with AC and Ice. If you're on the starting line with an ice cold body you're gonna struggle even more in the heat.

And make sure you have ventilated gear. A couple of years ago I raced with Scott pants that had no ventilation at all - I had to retire, couldn't handle the heat in the legs anymore

When I was still racing I would hide out in my air conditioned camper between motos and maybe even take a nap. Of course I was in pretty good shape and really focused on hydration all week long. Also we only raced 4 lap motos for the most part so there is that Wink

Hydrate well all week. I drink almost a gallon a day with pink Himalayan sea salt in it. Ride days I drink EAA's with my water.

I also been using that for 20 years and I load the cage with ice and still working great all these years.

I buy a liter of pedialite and drink that during the day in addition to hydrating a few days before riding. If it’s good for being completely dehydrated from vomiting and being sick it works well for sweating

Definitely want to hydrate more than 24 hours before. I drink quite a bit of water all week long anyways , but make sure I get about a 3/4 gallon in me a day , a good 3 days before a ride. Even if it's only 60 - 70 degrees out , you work up a good sweat. I'll start usually drinking pedalite as well about 48hrs before my ride as well and through out the ride day and after. I'm not a big fan of cooling off with AC and so forth , as it seems to make it even more miserable on my next moto. I like to stay acclimated some what.

Hydration starts 3 days before an event. 2 bananas a day and get a taste for pickles, just the regular kind and DRINK THE JUICE. Yes you can do the pedialite drinks but water water water. My track coach drove home "if you're not pissin every 45 minutes to an hour you're not drinkin enough"!
I always dunk my jersey in cold water just before going to the line. Put that baby on and it helps to wake you up and once the race starts it's great! Lastly if you feel "weird" on a hot day STOP EVERYTHING and listen to your body, don't ignore the signs. Lightheaded, puffy fingers (me), stop sweating (probably the worst of all), fuzzy hearing, tunnel vision. I've had all of these at one time or another and they're not to be ignored.

Jump in the pool when done riding. Rio Bravo has had a pool since the 1970s. Every track should have one or a cool pond to cool quickly if you get too hot. 3 Palms has a nice lake.

I could see moderate increases in heat stroke from being overly caffeinated.

And yes, hydration is critical and best to always be hydrated, but you can certainly drink too much water! How much salt are people adding to their water?

I love the Fox vented gear. I also ditch the thick socks for thinner running socks.

Baby powder in the gloves helps with blisters too.

This is the main reason I built my track. I ride from 7:30 to 8:30 AM then jump in the pool to cool off after a 1 hour moto.

The heat and humidity here will literally suck the life out of you. A cold beer after riding seems to replace the electrolytes the best and all the sweet drinks like gatorade just taste nasty.

You should be hydrating much sooner than 24 hours before an event. You should be hydrating every day, throughout the day. You can't just cram a bunch of water into your body 24 hours before an event and expect to be "hydrated." It doesn't work that way. Hydration should just be part of your normal, daily routine.

Taking bath salts the whole week ahead of a race raises your core body temperature and helps acclimatize your body to functioning at the elevated temperatures it'll see during a race. As a side benefit it also increases your aggression levels so you can "eat" up your competition and I mean that literally, you eat them up like chewing off their eyebrows, ears and such.

Vented Jersey.. and for God sakes dont pull up your sleeves. Sweat on a vented Jersey actually keeps the body cooler on the inner forearm . Opt for white gear also. I saw a guy at a dealer asking for black gear recently...Huh?

Yes, it would be much smarter for tracks to open up by 9am at the latest in the summer. You are lucky to have your own track!

I would also disagree with the "you must hydrate longer than 24 hours before the event". Of course, hydration every day is important, but if you're hammering water all the time and not watching your sodium levels you are probably risking hyponatremia. Moreover, it really only takes the body about an hour for your body to process water unless you are severely dehydrated. No idea where you guys are getting 72 hours from, other than the fact that it's always good to stay hydrated. When I said 24 hours, I meant that it is critical to drink the right amount of water and do some sodium / electrolyte preloading the day before.
