Any word Sexton?

Didn't Malcom Stewart have issues with the heat the last year he did the nat's? Heat and humidity can be deadly. Smart move on Sexton's part to pull out and not risk his life for some points.

I am however surprised no one (from what I could see) was running cooling west.

Crushed ice inside boots also help.

I believe Tomac was wearing a cooling vest?

Kid I work with says dirt bikes are easy. I should show him Sexton after moto 1. That’s no joke he looked out of it. Smart move to sit out Moto 2

Wiki:
For 2014 he raced the 450 motocross class. He started the season well with top 10s in 9 of the first 11 rounds but missed the last 5 due to complications of dehydration leading to kidney problems.

I think that did continue for some time.

I think only on the starting gate. Freestone I know some riders had it during Moto some years ago

I went to the first muddy creek national 5yrs or so ago and it was mid 90's with high humidity (my skin actually blistered it was so hot) After the races were over I saw Jimmy Albertson and his then Suzuki team standing in those commercial plastic garbage cans taking an ice bath. I can't imagine pushing yourself to that extent. Much respect.

Before the gate drop, yes. Took it off before the race started. Cooling vests only last for a short period in FL. The high humidity does not promote evaporation and the vest then becomes a sauna.

I think the Florida National was a success, despite the heat, but you probably weren't there to actually see it...

And what spin? What different decision should the big dogs have made? Both Muddy Creek and Glen Helen decided not to be on the schedule in 2019, for different reasons, so they were replaced with two very good races in the same respective parts of the country. When else would you put a Florida National between June 15 and August 27, which is the window we have after the first three western region rounds?

It was 105 degrees at the 1981 250 National. We were warned at the rider's meeting about hydration during the race. In the first moto, nearly every rider stopped for water except Hannah and Howerton. In moto two, they both stopped for water. Were they pussies or were they smart? Oh yeah, it was in June.
Did any of the riders on Saturday wear a Camelback? They use them in GNCC all the time to stay hydrated...…….I could see guys not wanting to wear one because of the weight in MX.

then have Pala the week before or after Washougal while you are already on the West Coast assuming it wouldn't be too crazy hot in Cali then. Or, as a last resort the very last race of the season.... I specifically worked to keep High Point on Father's Day weekend. Wink

They have options to run hydration packs and gels to wear during the race and then just not push it as much also.
So the bottom line is who do you blame for severe health issues like heat stroke and dehydration? The rider or people who run the organization.
Certainly not the promoters. The riders should know their bodies and how hard they can push. They all have the option to pull off if they feel light headed or Ill in any way

He had one on at the gate but pretty sure it came off for the race...whatever he did it worked. He barely looked winded after that second moto.

Thanks for the input and suggestions... The first thing we had to do was make sure WWRanch worked, which it did, very well. Now we can see where we are with the schedule moving forward, but the first four rounds likely won't change, they are established on those dates, but with next year being a leap year, there is an extra Saturday in May, which means early June may allow the Florida to move up a couple of dates...

As for putting Pala before Washougal, that adds too much travel miles and also it would be just as susceptible to hot weather as Florida in late June. Same goes (as far as heat) for late August in SoCal.

Getting electrolytes and water throughout an extremely demanding moto, especially moto 2, would be beneficial. If it wasn’t, why would racers be drinking water and electrolyte drinks between motos where there is such a quick turnaround time. Anytime you can replace, even small amounts, will help. Especially in Florida where the humidity is so high and we don’t get the significant benefits of good evaporation off your skin.

Shoot, I mean, even letting it dribble out of your mouth and down your jersey would help. I know it does for me.

This is ridiculous! Remove heads from asses please. This is motocross! There don’t need to be more rules to pander to the few guys that can’t cut it in the heat. Two fields of 40 riders and a few have heat stress issues. It is what it is! Like holy crap. That’s like saying that Denver should be off the schedule because some guys get altitude sickness! Ridiculousness. No ivs, let the format alone.
Yeah, what's all the fuss? Back in my day we died of heat stroke all the time - die of heat stroke in moto 1, come back and win moto 2. Toughened us up. This is moto - separate the men from the boys. If you can't come back from a little death, then take up golf.

Why not shorten the motos a little when there is danger of heat stroke? I don't think taking 5-10 minutes off the motos when it's 105 degrees would take away too much from the racing. Why risk another Josh Lichtle-type incident? The main event in supercross is 20 minutes and in dangerous heat that would be plenty of time for great racing, IMO.

I heard Weege say on the fly racing podcast that the staff was monitoring the heat index during the races, but he didn't say what the threshold was for shortening moto's.

I have to take heat stroke avoidance courses every year to receive my youth sports coaching certificate.

Every published medical recommendation I have seen runs contrary to what you just said, and says something like: "Drink plenty of water or other cool, non-alcoholic fluids even if you’re not thirsty" (Mayo Clinic). That is usually the number 1 recommendation on the avoidance list.

Never once have I read it won't make a difference in a 35 min activity. If indeed it isn't helpful for such a short period of activity, why is running to the water bottle the first thing the heat exhausted athletes are doing to regain some comfort?

that is about electrolyte replenishment, not heat exhaustion. There are multiple factors at play in athletic performance.

And obviously for somebody who is in potentially life-threatening heat stress, regulating body temperature is the higher order medical issue to thier sodium/potassium levels.

It was a great race! Keep it on the schedule!

And yes, wearing a water backpack WILL help! Being able to sip water during the moto is not only the smart thing to do it WILL make you ride better and last longer.

Plus, it will help your body for moto 2 in a better way.

Silly none of them wear one. If Tomac or Roczen started doing it they all would. Just common sense.

Do you see them drinking as they are thirsty, or pouring 95% of it over their heads?

For a well hydrated rider it makes no difference to get one or two sips of water during a 35min race.

They do eat some sand or dust and for that I as well prefer water to wash out my mouth but it was hardly dusty this weekend...

Even runners or bicyclist don't bring water for 45min races. They bring carbohydrates gel if it is closer to and hour and up.

Well you will wait 5min for gate drop then 30 + 2 laps and rundown to pits after standing in podium to talk media. Guy who uses gamelback gets fuilds whole that time and will be better starting point for next moto that comes just in 30mins.
Ask F1 drivers how they feel after race is their water system doesnt work. Fluilds will help but sure you will survive without also.

Remember, we are talking about heat stress, and what to do in those conditions, not typical athletic events and attempting to maintain blood sugar/electrolytes during exertion.

And the recommendation for heat stress is cool fluids.

then have Pala the week before or after Washougal while you are already on the West Coast assuming it wouldn't be too crazy hot in Cali then. Or, as a last resort the very last race of the season.... I specifically worked to keep High Point on Father's Day weekend. Wink

Travel miles can't be the main/only reason, because that weird Rutherford/Foxborough round has been a mileage mess since it was introduced. There's clearly some sort of formula that has another element which can cause mileage concerns to be tossed out the window. Witnessing how people operate over the years would tell me that the other element is most likely connected to something monetary.
