Just how fast is fast?

Today, thunder valley the lap times were around 2.10 to 2.15 for the top pro's,

What would a lap time be for a C rider?
Assuming most of us could only ran a lap or two around that track anyway.

My guess would be 5.00 flat.

I would be shocked if a C rider was getting 5 min lap times. Depending if we are talking good C, average C, or squid C.

I would think a good C rider would hopefully not be much slower than a 3 min lap time. I know the pros are fast, but a minute a lap seems like an awful lot.

How long is the track? 2 miles? 2.5 miles? 1 minute is an eternity over a couple miles.

Someone with a better brain than me run the numbers and figure out the average speed a rider is going if they can go 2 miles in 2 minutes 15 seconds...then compare that to the average speed a rider would be going if they did that same 2 miles in 3 minutes 15 seconds.

I dunno but the dudes that didn’t make the show were running 2:35+.. and all those dudes are local hero’s at there series/track... so I guess how close to speed are the local C class to the local pro... I race vet b and Austin kouba ( local fast pro) didn’t qualify for the 40 gate and he blows my fucking doors off.. so I think the 4:30+ lap times for a average C ride is my guess🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

I would say between 36 to 47 seconds slower per lap, depending on track deterioration

EDIT: this gap vs. Fastest lap on B group timesheets.

These are the group B 1st practices.... you guys think you could throw down lap times as some of these dudes? 30 sec difference??? That’s the gap from the top dudes to the times of dudes I’m showing... Sorry C class dudes it’s not happening! Give these pro dudes some credit.

(Assuming a 2 mile track length):

The top guys are at lap times of 2:15...average speed over 2 miles of 53.33 MPH

Drew Thomas who qualified 34th out of the 1st B practice was averaging 47.85 MPH on that same 2 mile track (averaging 5.4 MPH slower with a lap time 19 seconds slower, than the fast guys at 2:15/lap).

Assuming a C class racers is running a lap time double that of the top guys at 5:30/lap...he'd average 21.8 MPH

That's a BIG difference!

I'd say the average C class racer would be around 3:15-3:45 lap times.

For some perspective:

I got beat by KC66 (the best of the best!) by 55 minutes over a 95 mile hare and hound. He averaged 31 miles per hour. I averaged 24 MPH. My brother-who is noticeably faster than me when we ride together...he'll usually beat me by about 15 minutes in a hare and hound...He averaged 25.8 MPH. He was 2 MPH faster than me...that's it. But when riding be caught passed and left me like I was standing still.

Track isn’t 2 miles, will be more like 1.25m, average speed of a top guy will be between 32 - 36mph depending how fast the track is.

1 extra mph in average speed is huge. 6 - 8 seconds per lap. Those guys in B practice are probably only 2mph average speed or so off Tomac, in seconds that’s huge.

^1.25mi long seems more accurate. At 1.25mi a 2:15 lap time is around 33.3MPH average, and Drew Thomas(listed above in 34th) ran a 2:34 which would put him at 29.2MPH average, so about 4MPH slower. Using those numbers, averaging 1MPH lower is equal to losing 4.75sec per lap.

The mid pack guys in the dream race were lapping at 2:45. The kid who won the dream race was running 2:22's and was checked out from the rest of the field.

I would guess the 40th place guy would lap a c rider between 4 and 5 laps on a normal day at the track? The track yesterday, the speed differential would have been huge even between top c rider and beginner.

You put C riders on the track after the last 450 moto, I guarantee all lap times are above 3 min. Mine included.

Did you run those lap times on the National weekend? Unless you did, there's absolutely no way to compare your times to the times of the pros unless you rode the exact same track as they did, which I'm sure you didn't.

I went to thunder valley last year (maybe year before) during the week after the nationals before they changed the track back to how it normally is... whoa... its totally different. I mean those jump faces seem damn near vertical for the national, and the ruts are not even close to that on a normal weekend. Id say well over 3 minutes for a C rider depending on condition.

I raced buds creek back in the 90's and we got to run the track after the pros got off. I got multiple top 3s in the B class that weekend. So I had my girl friend time both McGrath and I. I was 30 + seconds a lap slower than him. I could not believe it cause I thought I was flying.

Guess not.

I would say if you broke under 3:00, you are probably not a C class rider.

Everyone knows the C class = the most sandbaggers.

Usual excuse, "I use to ride A-B class but it has been a while since I raced, so I will race C class".
