Tomac at Hangtown

I haven't seen much comment regarding Tomac's ride in the first moto at Hangtown. As most already know Tomac usually dominates at Hangtown, this was far from that. Not being able to run the pace of Roczen, Webb, or Anderson in the dry is surprising.

Makes me believe he isn't yet comfortable with his 2019 bike in the great outdoors.It's going to be interesting to see how things progress and if he will find the speed to run with the 3 previously mentioned.

Ya I know he got second overall but to Tomac's standards at Hangtown that was actually underperforming.

Pretty sure Weege and GL commented on that multiple times throughout the broadcast that the first moto wasn't on par for Eli. Its the first of 24 motos, its a brand new bike.Yeah, I'm sure they've got some testing in but no testing compares to real world racing. Its not the end of the world.

i think its all mental.. he was on his way forward until he passed Anderson, and then Anderson fought back for the position and then Eli dropped an Anchor...

A 2019 bike in 2019 is still new... its not a 2016 bike in 2018..

Some of you are dense. The 19 is ground up brand new engine and chassis. Zero settings translated from the 18. In 2020 itll have minor changes if any. All/most of the settings will carry over in 2020. First outdoor national was last week besides the mxon which was muddy and a wash essentially for settings.

Its still being developed. Goodness.

All the rain leading up to the race made the track look a bit different than other years even if it was a dry race. He had a not great Moto, it happens sometimes especially with him.

Of course it means something but pure speed is really what I was commenting on. Eli didn't have the pace to run with the 3 front runners or Osborn for that matter. It isn't the end of the world nor was I suggesting that. I believe that Eli is struggling with bike setup as he has so often in the past. It is a new bike as yz133 stated.

2nd overall, and someone starts a post asking what’s wrong with him. You people are ridiculous. I can think of 38 riders who’d love to get the overall results he got after he apparently “dropped an Anchor”

Eli does have a history of passing people and then letting them right back by. I am sure the other racers know this. Seems to often cause him trouble when someone passes him back.

As soon as Anderson passed him right back he totally fell off the pace. A little strange for sure. He should have gotten 2nd that moto if he kept going.

Got tight again like the three races after Daytona? I am sure he has been testing for outdoors a good while since the SX title was basically out of reach.

This week will tell a lot.

Agree to disagree. If racing the same bike raced last year at Des Nations and it is still not "developed" then I think there is a problem.

That said, maybe he was just playing it safe. He did win the 2nd moto so there can't be many bike issues.

Eli appears to have become a very good mud rider now so the 2nd moto may not be telling. He beat KR94 at the MXoN in the mud too.

In the first moto he was moving forward until the track got slippery, seemed like his goggles got wasted or he wasn’t comfortable on a greasy track

That was in the mud. He normally would beat those 3 guys in the dry, that's why I question what was up. This weekend will be telling.

To me the conditions in the first moto were not necessarily Eli conditions. It looked rutty, tacky and technical a condition where Kenny can show his prowess. Imho Eli is at his best when he can banzai on hard pack, sand or slop.

Yeah Eli usually kills it at Hangtown,but he didn't this time,was it the usual Hangtown conditions that we see him dominate in?
Maybe we don't have all the info,or maybe he got tight and didn't feel like wadding it up and making the points situation worse.Or maybe he had an Eli moment and just wasn't feeling it. Some of these questions might be answered next week.But second overall is a good start to the season.

In my opinion Tomac got lucky that the second moto was a mudder. He wasn't that great in the first moto, he should have got fifth. I think the fact that he was probably the only one willing to send it in those conditions to salvage a decent day is what contributed to his moto win. He's also proven to be quite decent in the mud, at least compared to his usual competition. If it's dry at Pala I expect more of what we saw in the first moto, it was pretty clear he was a step off guys like Webb, Anderson and Osbourne and probably a few steps off Kenny.

Ever since Hangtown 2015 the bar has been set ridiculously high for Tomac at Hangtown. Any other rider goes 4-1 at the opener and it's zero questions asked about what's wrong. Just like that run in SX that he had in 2017....the bar was set so high he can almost never equal it again and people will always want to hold him to it.

True to a certain extent. Him passing JA21 and then falling off the pace and letting ZO (who he passed with no issue earlier) back by does make you wonder what all of a sudden happened.

We are used to seeing him charge harder the second half of the moto outdoors, not fall back for no apparent reason.

It could be the rain started and he felt uncomfortable on the track. Seemed to happen right around that time. With Eli we will never know. He did say something like, 'I fell off the pace.' Didn't tell us why though.

EVERYONE IS RACING THE SAME TRACK.

If you can't adapt to different conditions, than you aren't the best guy. PERIOD.

Its the same shit i heard during the MXoN. STOP MAKING EXCUSES. EVERYONE HAS TO RACE THE SAME TRACK.
