Depends on where you are, what kind of coverage you have, etc. Could be pretty quick, or to your point it can take some time, measured usually in a few weeks. Article I referenced said in Canada the average time to see a specialist is 20 weeks from time of referral...

"Specialist physicians surveyed report a median waiting time of 20.0 weeks between referral from a general practitioner and receipt of treatment—longer than the wait of 18.3 weeks reported in 2015."
That's odd, I have relatives in Canada and they have said they have never had issues with waits or service. They also can't believe people in the US go bankrupt due to medical cost. Maybe they haven't needed specialized care? I know one of them had breast cancer and didn't ever make comments about not getting the care they needed. This year healthcare plan at my company went up to a $8500 deductable, do me that pretty much sucks and has me worried about riding. With this, still have premiums each month of around $500. I know I would be willing to pay more taxes if could have guaranteed healthcare. Also, if companies were "forced" to add what they currently pay for their portion of the healthcare plans to your salary, would it be a big difference? I don't know, but do know they say their cost is around $20k/year. Just seems like healthcare should be a much higher priority of our elected officials than a border wall or Russian investigations, but I'm an independent voter so don't get worked up like those on the hard right or left about those topics.

Listen to what youre saying. NOBODY is writing a check for 500k without batting an eye. 500k is a lot of money to anyone. Especially in our sport. Seriously, at the end of the day YOU need to make sure you are covered. Expecting handouts isnt acceptable. R2r raised $325k in 2018. With the number if sports injuries, theyd never keep up.

So you’re telling me if you were making 3-5 million a year you wouldn’t stroke a sizeable check for a close friend/family member that was seriously injured?

Ken has been on the better side of 7 figure salaries for awhile now, he could easily foot the bill.

In California (and I suspect roughly the same throughout the US), if you are over 50, a decent PPO-grade policy, and if you are paying for your own insurance with no "help" from your employer (self-employed) is in the $1000 per month range. If you don't have a PPO, be ready to jump thru all kinds of hoops, and be questioned at every move by your "helpful" insurance company. Their real job is to pay for as little as possible, while charging you the absolute maximum.

Don’t get me started. Our entire healthcare system sucks. People with insurance or over billed to provide for those that don’t. I have a good job and good insurance and had an accident at the beginning of last year. After spending $10k out of pocket after insurance for deductables and co pays for in network out of network blah blah blah. I was still left with a balance bill of $45k. Arrowhead Regional Hospital in Colton, Ca. Is trying to get me to pay the remainer of a $121k four day stay at the hospital after insurance paid their fair share of $76k for services rendered. Keep in mind this is for room and board and supplies for said room only. All patient care was billed separately. That’s $30k per day they are wanting for lying in a bed and pissing in a jug. Insurance paid $19k per day and Arrowhead wants me to pay the balance of $11,250 per day above and beyond meeting all of my maxim out of pocket expenses. They offered to take a look at my income and possibly reduce the amount owed by some percentage possibly up to 100% if I qualify. (Pretty sure I don’t) Its fukn sad that those that pay are made to pay even more to cover those that don’t. I’ll fight and continue to fight for doing the right thing.

Yep, this is a bunch of BS. People that haven't had an accident or illness don't understand that even with good insurance you can loose all your life's savings due to one medical issue. It's not just those trying to live off the government or "gaming" the system that need the healthcare system to be overhauled in the US.

When I read posts like this it makes me happy I’m Canadian. I busted my pelvis and thumb 3 years ago, cost me 85$ for the ambulance ride(I could of called a rescue chopper in for the same 85$). Did not cost me a penny once I was in hospital and the company I worked for had group insurance to pay my wages for the 6 months I was off.
I always thought your Declaration of Independence started with “we the people “? If you put politics aside, just try for a second, don’t you think paying 1 or 2% more in taxes so you and your fellow Americans(we the people) didn’t have to worry about being sick, getting hurt or just going to a Dr. would be a good thing?

problem with this is it wont be 1 or 2%. we would have to fix the entire medical billing problem because its a scam. I'm sure they aren't charging $400 for a butterfly bandaid and another $400 for some superglue. They charge this because they all get away with it currently. Hospitals, medical care, and medical insurance is all a scam and they are all in it together
Add the big pharma $$$$$$ mob to the list of people trying to rip you off. Some of the things pharmacy companies do to increase costs on certain medications is downright sickening.

I've actually been debating selling the bike here soon. I'm about to separate active duty and health insurance is up in the air even though I served overseas and have some ailments that are service related if not over 50% rated you don't get full VA Healthcare benefits only for service related issues and looking at part time job health insurance plans and deductibles / maximums, this sport / hobby is a risk I just feel I cant take once I leave active duty and go full time student.

1%-2% more?? That's hilarious!

I guess you have not seen the cost for the "medicare for all" program that the leftists in this country are pushing? $30trillion + over 10 years and that is just the "expansion" part - that doesn't count the current cost of medicare.

Our current federal budget is $4trillion. So almost a doubling of the annual budget. Now you could assume that would require a doubling of tax rates to ay the difference (not 1-2%) - but now you run in to the issue of the laws of economics - because doubling tax rates would cripple the economy and you would derive LESS net revenue. Our private sector is already being suffocated by taxes.

Also - that $30 trillion number and the program they are pushing includes doctors getting paid approx. HALF what they get paid now. We already have a problem with doctors leaving the industry - how many are gonna stick around getting paid half? Not all doctors are balling $500k+ a year either - many are only making $150k or less as general practitioners. Further, how many people are going to take the long expensive road to become a doctor if they get paid like crap?

And that is how you get 5 month+ wait times to see specialists in places with single payer healthcare - because it doesn't pay to be in medicine anymore. There are significant wait times for specialists in single payer systems - plenty of studies out there prove that data point.

No thanks....I think we should go the opposite direction - get govt. the hell out of our healthcare system so we can have what we had back in the 50's (a world class system) prior to medicare and medicaid getting instituted and govt sticking their nose under the healthcare tent.

You're right it won't be just 1 or 2%, but your overall cost for healthcare would likely still be lower. And I also agree that it would be a big undertaking since the entire system is broken.

I've lived in the both the US and in Europe for significant periods of time. The 'we the people' mindset didn't seem to exist in the US. It was more of a 'personal responsibility' approach. I don't intend this to be a negative comment towards the US.. I'm just pointing out that many things that would fall under the 'we the people' category in Europe are frowned upon in the US. I believe this is a big reason why you don't see support in the US for a tax increase for healthcare.

The problem with any of these more "socialistic" undertakings is the US has an enormous number of people happy to live off the government dole. In these smaller European countries the systems can work much more efficiently because I don't believe you have 30 to 40% of your citizens happy doing as little as possible and letting the government bail them out. I could be wrong. For example, in Sweden, I can't imagine you have 3 or 4 million of your 10 million citizens content to be a burden on society.

I will also say Americans would not be keen on rationing of healthcare. The average wait for an MRI in Canada is 11 weeks. Seeing a specialist takes a long time as well, etc. In the US you might wait a week or two for a routine MRI, but can usually get one immediately if needed. The horror stories of socialized medicine scare Americans, and there may be some legitimacy to it, some of it may be overblown. But Americans pay for that access, medical costs in the US are indeed out of control for many reasons.

Anything coming out of the “Fraser institute” is hard leaning conservative.

keep that border wall from being perfected, and this problem is only going to escalate until the money is gone.......Free medical for all will only work until the ones that work and get gouged for the deadbeats who won't pay for insurance get tired of it and shut down.....Lose-Lose for everyone.....I believe we are not that far away from another 'correction'....

We can't keep taking great care of all the uneducated, unhealthy, lazy, baby making morons that do whatever it takes to get North to the land of idiots and free stuff. I predict that this gets ugly.....Hope I'm wrong.

How the fuck do you possibly know what Ken Roczen's financial situation is? You do his taxes or something?

Exactly ! Ken Roczen underwent 12 surgeries last year! How much do you think that cost him out-of-pocket, 49weasel?? He's as much a victim of the medical system as the rest of us!! If you CAN afford to pay, you WILL pay! Lol!

Ask any veteran who has had to deal with the VA what the experience is like and most will tell you its horrible. Of all the people that should be getting A+ care its our vets. The VA system is the USA's version of single payer govt. run care - that is what the nationwide system would look like.

If our govt. can't run the VA for a small number of vets (in comparison to 300mm people) - what do you think a nationwide mandated system for the entire country would look like?

No one will argue that our healthcare system right now doesn't have problems (mainly cost) - but the solution in my opinion is not more govt, - they are the problem. We have seen this before - govt. comes in and sticks their nose into a perfectly good functioning free market system, jacks it up with added cost and regulations, then turns around and says "see the private sector can't run this....

Good luck unwinding power hungry bureaucrats from the system though......

Not without taking serious consideration first. If i have 2 million dollars im not giving away 25% of my worth without batting an eye.

Ken probably did cover a lot of it. But he cant go broke over it.

If you made 45k in a year, are you giving away $6700 without batting an eye? Hell no. Nobody would. Thats a huge financial decision.

Make no mistake. I am not pro govt healthcare I am pro fixing the healthcare system to atleast what it was when I landed in my first “group policy” back in 1991 atleast.

Current problem is ins underpaying for services in which you paid into and Dr’s/facilities over charging for services and supplies rendered. I am not against them making money but GOUGING the patient is NOT the answer for covering the cost of those without Insurance!

Seems like some insurance plans just Blow.

Racked up about 50-60k over a four day stay. Broke 6 ribs, collapsed a lung, Grade 5 AC seperation (Hospital ortho didnt catch this even though I told them my shoulder bothered me the worst), and a Torn peck that was later discovered by a different ortho as well. I literally looked at my own x rays when I got discharged and could tell the collar bone was no longer attached to my shoulder, yet the ortho in the hospital finally came to talk to me and said he had a look at my x rays and saw nothing. Tell him what happened and he'd have another look. Came back and said yep nothings wrong, and refused to send me for an MRI. One of the nurses told me the MRI was a no go due to all the radiation.... Meanwhile they're sending me for 2 full body CT scans a day for 3 days straight and x rays 3 times a day , ha.

3k Deductible, of which I think I paid 2k (company puts some money aside every year in an account that rolls over and builds to cover deductibles....up to 3k then its maxed until you use it), So I had about 1k in there.

The bills were astonishing when im looking at them, X ray 1 in the morning, 3 radiologists billing at it. X ray 2 mid day, 4 more radiologists shooting the bill. CT Scan mid day, four more radiologists shooting the bill. X ray 3 in evening , same thing. Repeat for four days.

I told my insurance company I did not want them to pay the Orthopedic that spent 10 seconds with me and billed me 500$ to tell me nothing was wrong, when in fact it was.

Of that 60k or whatever of bills, the insurance has some negotiated rate (60k is the up front cost for those with no insurance), of like 35k they paid. I paid ~2k. I have no health insurance premium every month, company pays for it as a single male.

Like I said previously, i'm sure my situation is different than most. Part of the problem here is, why can a hospital bill out 60k, but its automatically knocked down to 35k if insurance is paying to square up and settle, yet if its a person off the street with no insurance , welp heres your 60k bill, sure we can try to help you and give you a payment plan. Thats part of the problem. If insurance can pay 35k and the hospital is happy, then 35k is what it should cost to anyone.

I went to the ER at my nearby hospital 2 nights ago after experiencing constant dizziness since last Saturday. Went in at 9:15 pm, got admitted, had some bloodwork at 10 pm, saw a doctor at 10:45 pm. Diagnosed me with benign vestibular vertigo and told me to wait for my bloodwork to come back before he released me. At around 12:30 am my bloodwork came back and he didn't like what he saw, so he ordered an EKG, and did some more bloodwork. At 2:15 am I got the all clear and got released. No bill, no nothing. Yes we pay way more basic income tax than our US brothers (that is how I look at it), but having the ability to go to a walk in clinic, or to the ER if necessary without thinking for one second how this affects my insurance is an absolute privilege that I would never want to give away. No system is perfect, but I will take our imperfect system any day. And while we are on the differences between our countries, when our Prime Minister drops the date for an election coming up here in the next year, in approx. 6 months we will have elected a new leader. Boom. Drop the election, and in a few short months, go to the ballot box, and vote. Done. None of this two year process and hundreds of million dollars spent. Thank the good Lord for this as well.

Stay in the Reserves, strap program maybe if you’re going to school ....or apply for a position at the VA. Any position you’ll get preference and maintain great benefits.

Reserves is not an option, it is but Im not wanting or willing to do anymore time in the service, after 10 years I'm ready to hang the uniform up. I was thinking about this as well I'll have to see if there are any openings near me for positions. I'm still waiting to see how much my disability rating will be I have nerve damage and knee and back issues all related to deployments / service, but nervous it will be less than 50% and at that point looking at plans and deductibles I'm wondering if hanging up my boots for a bit wouldn't be a bad idea. Thanks!

Ken has been on the better side of 7 figure salaries for awhile now, he could easily foot the bill.
You're wrong.

Ken also has his own bills and future to worry about. Would you be able to hand someone 1/6 of your salary without “batting an eye?”

Ken has made a very nice living for himself, there’s no doubt about that. But you act like he’s making football/baseball money. He’s not making Peyton Manning money.

Being employed by a company who covers my health insurance in the states, with a very small deductible (had a large get off myself in June of 18), kind of makes this an unfair comparison.

For those who do have to pay out of pocket via at a discount through their employer, or through some personal insurance where they pay the entire premium, Whats the average cost?

To make it fair, can I ask what the average Canadian would pay on say, 75,000$ CDN in income tax as a single person?
Lets say in a state with state income tax, comibining all taxes together you paid 25% of your gross in income tax barring any wild deductions. That'd be about 19k give or take.

Because I have no idea, although i've heard statements from others before, approximately 50% for a middle class two income family in canada, lets just assume 32% in Canada for a single earner. Thats 24000.

Difference of 5000$/year, ~415$ a month. Are those in the states paying 415 a month or more for insurance on average?

I have no idea, I just made quite a few of these numbers up but the math would hold true barring the currency conversion ect ect. Ovbiously any difference in tax isnt immediately tied to health care, but from what i've seen in general, everything in Canada costs more. Fuel, Vehicle Registrations ect, even with the exchange rate as good as it is at the moment.
In BC where I live a $75,000 income results in a $15,241 income tax bill. So approximately 20% average rate and that would be 28% marginal rate.

Basically in BC (pretty similar in the rest of the country to) if you make between $45-90k a year you're in a 30% marginal rate.

Our top bracket is 49.8% but doesn't kicked in until you hit $205k of income.

Who says r2r is writing checks on this case? Or any for that matter. My understanding is they do a lot more than just help with financials. They also act as an advocate for the injured rider I believe. So they could have been a huge help and deserve thanks, but not have contributed financially
