Yes to the 2 smoker. Easy peasy and you are well on your way to mastering a 2 stroke with riding the buck and a 1/4.

Black plastic, black rims, and black swingarm. All done with extreme high temperature flat black header paint. He's so pro he didn't even need to remove the parts from the bike to paint them.

Hopefully for him, not on the face of a jump.

One thing I know for sure is that engine rebuilds are a whole hell of a lot cheaper than medical bills.

I recently just put a top end in my buddies '14 350 with 370 hours on it. The piston still looked new and all of the valves were still in spec. I don't think 200 hrs on a newer well taken care of bike is out of hand these days. That being said I've also seen brand new bikes toast at 15 hrs - Crank, piston, valves but I would assume those were mfg. defects.

How do you like your flywheel weight? I'm trying to decide which size to go with on my YZ.

370 hours is insane to me, for any size bike. However, a piston "looking" new and being structurally new are 2 different things. 200 hours on a 250 is still playing with fire imo, especially if it's a cast piston. That is a lot of heat cycles that have now weakened it.

Is your buddy more the casual trail riding type? If not, I guess good for him for pushing his bikes to it's limits without a failure! Cool

Even as a 30+ novice vet (slow) mx guy, I can wring my bike out in some sections, especially whoops. I can't fathom putting my bike through 200 hours of track riding (and racing) like that without doing a little motor work.

He's a hard core trail rider - no moto. I thought he was crazy to let it go that long and was really surprised to see the internals in such good cond.

What kind of riding are you doing?

As far as the choice goes between a 250 2 stroke or a 250F , it really depends on what kind of rider you are. I prefer the 2 stroke , but I wouldn't be against owning a 250F either. Get the bike that puts the biggest smile on your face , and one you can afford the maintenance on.

lmaooo I was definately exaggerating. Im at around 130+- hours. I ride enduros and XC races here in Toronto.
Before I go on I'd like to second that dudes post up there with a 450 making it to 300+ hours. My buddys 350XCW was at 230 hours before he did a full rebuild.

Im a B rider here, when I throw my supposed black plastics on im an A+ rider at least.

Completely stock motor wise, stock reeds from new etc, 50:1 premix, bled clutch a few times. Not a clutch rider and keep everything in proper order. Carbs tuned properly and always kept up with tranny oil changes.
Its seen full throttle a lot, huge mud bogs, long sandy hills and its been smashed into a few trees. It just keeps on going.

I do have a top end rebuild kit in the basement with all the fixins. Us Canadians do most of our maintenance during the winter so im waiting for that.

Plus this was directed to 80% of the people on here who aren't A+ level riders. Im just saying I don't follow most of these suggested maintenance cycles because Im not Justin Barcia out there.

If you listen to lets say Keefer inc podcast he suggests lets say a whole clutch to be replaced at 10 hours or something....thats just comedy in my world. But for the 1%-2% thats probably true. Most of those riders won't be on Vital either lol

Hey, I currently ride a 2017 YZ125 that I’ve been on for a year and a half. I ride mostly tracks and was starting to notice a lack of power as I race b class. I’m 15 years old 170 pounds and 6’2. I put an exsaust and reeds on my bike and also changed the gear ratio. I love the bike it’s tons of fun but should I get a 250?

Right? I have a 2016 YZ250F with 18 hours on it and a 2018 150SX with 6 hours on it...

But to the OP - 250 two stroke for sure! YZ250 is the best overall bike of all time, in my opinion.

Asking if you should buy a 2 stroke is like asking if you should be a pirate!! if you have the opportunity and can afford it always be a pirate and always ride 2 strokes

Yeah you need something with power. Speaking with Chris Howell, he said 170 pounds is a pretty heavy load on a 250f let alone a 125, especially at your speed.
250 will feel just like a 125 but twice the power.

Can you race a 250 two stroke with 250fs these days or do you have to be in the 450 class?

Haha I had a 14 yz450 so nice July of 2013 and sold it in April of this year. Bike had 38 hours on it...

Agreed. A KTM 300 does everything well.

you ride that 2 stroke it will make you a lot faster when you decide to jump back on a 4 stroke. You can win or loose races in corners, you master that with a 2 stroke and pass it to the 4 stroke your money. I see all these lazy asses that coast into corners and just blurp it coming out. Mixn gas and hauling ass is the way to go and its a lot more fun!

A 250 two stroke of your choice is a good option. Parts may be cheaper but you will be doing Pistons more often. You can always get a 4T down the road used.
Side Note: My friend at work has a 2011 KTM 250 SX-f which had 290+ hours on it this past spring. Bike has had oil, filters and valves checked regularly. Good luck!

Do you want to make every dude wish they were you?

If you answered yes to the above then your answer is yes.
I once jokingly asked a chick in college “two stroke or four stroke?”

She responded “Are two strokes the ones that make me cough?”

It was at that point I knew it wasn’t going to work out. . .

That’s a damn shame. If she can’t handle 2 strokes and a little smoke, she definitely isn’t worth it.
