I don't know if there's more to the story than what we're seeing, but if Axell had this dialed back in May and kept it somewhat secret, but is obviously holding out on it until releasing the video for X Games, then I'm not a fan of the "stunt" these guys have pulled (pardon the pun).
There's a difference between encouraging your peers to achieve something new, and stealing their thunder out of spite, which this appears to be.

Compound that by the fact that they always have to be surrounded by a huge posse of bros - someone is going to leak.
It used to be that guys would do stuff like this to up their game. Others would follow trying to duplicate the trick as quickly as possible. Something we call sport progression.
