Having said that I have about 45hrs on my 2017 and have had no issue, I have not seen or heard of this anywhere other than on Vital which tells me it is not as common as Vital make out. I've probably seen 3 complaints posted here in total.
Not everyone posts on Vital and not all Vital members post every time their bike breaks. Some just handle it and move on.
Yes I agree.

Awesome upgrade but hardly necessary for mortals. Those are people with money burning a hole in their pocket. I know plenty of people with money who have A kit forks on all the other types of bikes as well.
I know slow as clubman riders with A-Kit suspension, I know guys getting top 10 at nationals on stock suspension. Each to their own.

What did you think the plastic piece you got with the bike was for?

Rider/mechanic error

There is no such thing as operator execution error around here. You should know that.

Pull the forks off, take them to the KTM dealer, tell them it's a 50 hour bike, and that you want the forks fixed.

If they work with KTM to cover it- awesome!

If not, god forbid you have to pay for your forks to be serviced before the 50,000 hour mark.

OP - please be sure to create a follow-on post about the horrendous dealership service you will undoubtedly receive.
Your reading comprehension is lacking... The OP only rode the bike 1.4 hours (it's in the post title) where do you get 50 hrs from ??

So for all the guys posting in this thread (including you), would ANY of you be OK with this failure at 1.4 hours, after spending $12K on the bike ?

On another note... Several of you (no need to list the names, you know who you are) seem to think that the forks failed from tying down the bike down too tight in the truck. He was riding the bike when the forks failed and had to get the damn thing home. (Reason for the pic in the back of the truck) Why is it so hard to understand ? Yes... The dealer will take care of it. That doesn't change the fact of the forks being suspect to it happening again. The pic I posted of the guy sitting on his collapsed forks, had it happen twice. To make it even worse, he only rode it twice !! He rode 10 miles to get back to the MX track in Gorman, as he is a trail rider and was deep in the hills. Then sat with us, while his buddy rode back to get their truck, so they could load up and go home AGAIN. Does this seem like something that he should be OK with ? FUCK NO, Its not cool and it's dangerous.

I'm not bashing KTM, I own one and have had great luck with all 5 of the ones I've owned. But I choose to put Cone Valve forks on mine, because I like them and can afford to do so. If KTM offered spring forks or AER forks on their bikes, which one do you think would sell better ? And the whole 3 pounds light comments..... PLEASE tell me that you can feel that 3 pounds difference in the forks ? I think NOT !!

Of course you feel the difference of 3lbs, night and day. Its like running with spike tires and then going to normal tires. You actually have to position yourself differently on the bike to get the front end down with AER forks. For me the bike is not balanced with AER forks ,it is balanced with CV/spring forks which is a bit strange

Always have to use the rear brake in air more when running the AER.

Well, I’ve always said that I’d make a lousy test rider. The air forks feel / react different than spring forks, but I’d be a liar if I said I felt the weight difference.

I know the majority of posters only go by as long as the bike “feels light when you ride it” but that’s crazy talk, 3 pounds is 3 pounds. Not saying AER48 is the holy grail of forks.

Thats actually a KYB Yamaha part that has been plastic forever and had its own share of issues. I think thats the point Bruce was trying to make. Smile

That's a little different than the forks collapsing from an internal issue at 1.4 hours. This bike came out when? Last week?

I saw something about those plastic pieces needing to be drilled on the sides to release pressure so that wouldn’t happen. I serviced the forks on my 18 yz450f the other day and they were already drilled from the factory

Good to know. Certainly took long enough. I've seen posts on the subject going back to 2006, and that was only a quick search.

I know it's a totally different air fork but my Showa Tac forks on my Kawi have done this and I bled all the air and re filled it and they were fixed.

Exactly. I have both a 2017 350 SXF and a 2018 450 SXF with almost 20 hours on each, and not a hint of a problem on either AER 48.

And yes, I am abusing them by shorting jumps I should be clearing.

I do use the fork support device EVERY time they get tied down. To see that kind of failure in less than 2 hours is something Ive never seen around here.
