Tortelli. Before crashing out of the championship at Unadilla. One of the only riders to come from behind and beat Carmichael straight up.

+1- First time I went to Southwick, (after he retired), he showed up with a YZ 250 2stroke, and raced.

So freakin cool-

What would be the odds of ANY Former National Champion doing something like this now days?? ZiLCH.

JSR was awesome in Canada, Jlaw, KDub, but I have to say, I was in the stands the night Stewart win at Toronto after coming through the pack from nearly dead last. He had 3 sections where he had totally different lines than anyone else that were way faster. Watching that live was absolutely mind blowing, blew by Dungey like he was a c class rider.

Nothing and nobody could amaze me like JS7 did, is he my all time favourite? No, but in a one off race of the all time greats he would be my pick 100%

Not with sarcasm, but with complete respect.
When I was an 8 yr old child, I watched in complete awe of the talent before me, the 80 Expert class. In those days, those kids brought more people to the fences to watch than most classes would all day long. Kids then “hung on” to that very class until the very day their birthday would not allow a second more, and they displayed so much style, skill, and drive, at times the pros were envious.....
As for me, well, it was Ponca. 1982.... I was having a great season, even ending up 3rd in the nation after a week of battling with the nations finest. Sadly though, I was at the very place where our sport we so dearly adore, has one of our worst tragedies. We lost 3 incredibly amazing kids, kids I know in my heart would have changed the record books forever. At my age then, their class they were in was a goal, a goal that every little ripper wanted to get to..... Bruce, Rick, and Kyle were an absolute pleasure to see. I am a lucky man today to say I was lucky enough to witness such great talent, talent that is so rare. The title of this thread asks “Who do you miss?” Easily said.... The very talent that only some of us got to see for such a short time. God bless those boys..... That’s who I will forever miss.

I miss motocross from the late 90's to the mid 2000's. The sport was fun then, the videos, the life style, 2 strokes. It just seemed alot more fun back then and more accessible to the average guy. I love RC, but he brought the hardcore training and then the 4 strokes came and everything changed. You'll never find a Tomac, Dungey, type etc. out at Glamis on a holiday weekend to shoot a video, back in the day Fro and MC were out there throwing down with Seth Enslow and company. That's what originally got me hooked on motocross.

Travis Pastrana
John Dowd
Doug Henry
Jimmy Button
Steve Lamson
Mike Larocco

Basically the guys I grew up watching on TV. Would especially love to see any of those injured guys racing again. Aswell as guys who died while racing like Andrew McFarlane and Jono Porter.

Yeah, I'd push it to late 80s start, but same sentiment.

I totally agree with this. That is the moto I remember falling in love with and miss. Local races were like a giant family reunion and success was measured in fun for most rather than “did you win all 4 of your classes today little johnny? All your sponsors on Instagram are counting on you”

I remember trash cans full of beer cans by the end of the day, three doors down playing over the PA system and old tires hanging on metal stakes for track markers.

As soon as pro moto went full on hardcore training mode the amateur scene was soon to follow, unfortunately

+1...
I think this also is the reason I joined Vital after reading the whole thread and feeling very moved by the whole story and wanting to post myself.
https://www.vitalmx.com/forums/Old-School-Moto,22/Bruce-Bunch-Rick-Hemme-Kyle-Flemming,100125

All of us as (surviving) racers sort of 'had our chances and 'we did what we did', for any success, (in my case not really enough!) but for those 3 brilliant riders, they had their chance sort of cruelly taken from them before they could do and prove what they were surely highly capable of doing....
They never got the chance, where as many of us here today did... they didn't, which seems sad, along with the totally tragic circumstances, for all.

Although they were probably at the top of their game then, it just seems wrong that such superb riders should have this happen. Sadly it did and that is why I always will have a memory in my heart for these great riders/ kids. Some of the best memoroies of my life were of racing bikes, even quite fast at aged 14-16...same as them.. it was my dream that never happened. For these guys though. the dream could have easily happened and it sort of was happening... until...
Yes, In my case it was because I wasn't fast enough... they were... but they never got the chance...

Heroes in my eyes, along with others who have fallen tragically from this sport at times... it can be a cruel sport, oneway or another. Sometimes not in the obvious way that one may expect, i.e Injury on bike.

Made a recent post in the Bruce/ Rick and Kyle Thread https://www.vitalmx.com/forums/Old-School-Moto,22/Bruce-Bunch-Rick-Hemme-Kyle-Flemming,100125 about possibly abit of very short video footage of Bruce and poss Rick and Kyle also.

You must have been a damn good rider also Dadofagun to have raced in the Nationals and with these guys.

Great memories for me also of that period and times, although I only raced a few Nationals myself because I wasn't quite quick enough!
