It was great 19 years ago.

If the owner can't afford a fork guard and know how to route a brake cable, it makes me wonder what else is wrong with the bike.

I had a 1993 and absolutely loved it. Had to sell it at the time years ago but wish I still had it around. Seems like a decent deal for a "rebuilt" 250. Go take it for a ride, make sure all the gears work, no funny engine noises, ect.

I would ask for receipts for the claimed work performed. Most people who would put that effort into the internals would put on a new fork guard and route the brake line correctly.

Yup. Plus which piston size is in it, just to avoid replating soon.

^^^ Plus it's almost 20 years old. Wouldn't give over $800.

What are you looking to do with the bike? It would still be fun on the track - I rebuilt and raced a 94 KX 250 a few years ago and it was pretty respectable, at least for my skill level. What I liked is that the ergos still felt decent even compared to modern bikes.

98 was the end of that design (94-98) and I believe it was pretty refined.

If you plan to do vintage with it... the 98 may or may not be eligible. Make sure to check into that. Out here they cut off at 96 (although I have seen some 97s and 98s get by, because they are visually identical from 94-98.

$1,500 seems high, I think $1,100 sounds better if the motor work claim is actually legit. I let my nice 94 go in 2015 for $1300-1400 from what I remember.

The 97 and 98 KX 250's were shootout winners in many publications...Great motors...
If it runs/rides good, $1,500 sounds fair to me...$1,200-1,300 sounds even better....

Love these craigslist ad's that say "new top and bottom end" but then the bike is missing shit like a fork guard. Pretty much impossible for me to believe a guy that would spend the money to completely rebuild the engine wouldn't spend the 20 bucks to get a new fork guard.

I think on craigslist, top end = grips

bottom end = rear tire

"Good tires"

good as in they have air in them? yea, sure

The last picture in the ad does make it look like it might be missing a spacer on the front axle. I would check to see if the forks bind when compressed.

How did the guy not miss that before taking pictures and putting it online? I would say you could call bs on the rebuild without proof.

Pass! lol...
If he can't put the front end back together properly, I don't have much confidence for the rest of the bike.

I think I am going to get this Tomorrow, it wouldn't be my first choice but the guy is willing to trade me for a snowmobile I don't want anymore and can't sell this time of year so I am not paying the $1500 the snowmobile is worth $800 max so Imuch ok with it if it needs a few things
My plan is to To get the suspension re valved and set up for me as cheap as possible somewhere local and probably new tires , I just want to ride tracks on practice days I'm a c class rider and haven't ridden in years my last bike was a 2002 CR125 that I got New
I've never had a 250

The first gen frame on the 98 CR is a bit weird.
At a glance the CR looks like the better bike.

I would go with the cr. Mostly because it's in a lot better condition.

Between this one and the kx ?
KX250 for sure.

The 98 CR250 is the worst handling, weirdest feeling bike I've ever rode.
