It was 28th All-time. Nobody can dispute this undeniable fact.
Are you including my triumph over hangover to take 4th in 250 Int at the GNC in 1992? If not, 29th.

Don't really think it was all that epic. It isn't even any more impressive than some of webbs rides this year in the nationals against much deeper fields.

It isn't like returning from an injury and starting almost dead last in your first national back and taking the lead with several laps remaining.

Oh, and doing it on a 125 two stroke against a field of 250f machines. That was something I would consider almost epic.

Herlings got beat straight up, hes not the moto GOD he and the nuthugglers say he is. He got beat by a 17 year old for christ sakes almost twice. It also shows you how weak the MX2 class is in europe, its a cake walk for the guy.

Pretty soon every race will have a * at the end. The only way a winner will get full points is if every rider is healthy AND after the race they all have to vote and agree that they were racing hard and trying haha

My opinion will probably go down like a fart in a lift, but if you analysed the field of riders Webb was up against Im not sure it can be considered as one of the best rides of 'all time'.

Before I get lynched let's get one thing straight, it was very impressive and Cooper showed incredible heart. The fact he came from the back, beat Herlings and won in front of his home crowd was a great story. However, the entry list was more a case of 'Who the hell are they?' than a list of 'Who's Who'.

- Excluding Webb himself there were only 22 other riders in the second MX2 moto. Roughly half of which he was able to pass on the opening lap.

- 6 of those were American wildcards. Clearly Forkner & Harrison are top riders but the other four apparently struggle to qualify for Nationals, let alone score points regularly.

- Sanayei, Vaessen & Prado are EMX riders who have stepped up to race the last couple of GPs.

- Bulgarian rider Stoyan Rashkov appears to be a mid-pack Arenacross rider who doesn't even race outdoors.

- That left just 11 regular MX2 riders, of varying ability, on the line in Charlotte.

- There are countless riders absent with injuries at the moment, including; Ferrandis, Tonkov, Jonass, Petrov, Graulus, Brylyakov, Rauchenecker, Sterry, Watson, Justs & Mewse. These are typically 2nd - 15th place guys in MX2 and without them the class is particularly weak.

Webb is undoubtably faster than those guys, but they're also stronger riders than most of the guys that lined up in Charlotte. So I'm not convinced he would have been able to slice through the pack as easily with them in the mix. Had he managed to do what he did on saturday with a full strength MX2 field then fair enough, that might have put it within the realms of 'all time', at least for me anyway.

It took Herlings and what's left of the MX2 field to come over to race the AMA champ in his home town, for him to do it and they to won one each,Herlings was the fastest MX2 time too,but you make ridiculous statements trying compare class for class by a race over there.

How would the AMA riders fare racing the MX2 class in their backyards, remember how Lommel went, care to predict how Webb and Forkner would place there or over a season of MX2 tracks where some are man made, not just the European ones?

I'll add it was an incredibble ride by Webb don't get me wrong but the odds were surely in his favour and many said Herlings wouldn't do anything

it'll be interesting to see the fastest times from each race (fastest in practice doesn't mean shit)

Herlings was definitely the better in moto 1, though i think Forkner could have done it had he not fallen

Webb was definitely better in moto 2

that's all that really matters. one race a year won't tell us anything, which is why it's so silly when anyone brings up the MXDN.

So basically the same fields JH faced during his career in MX2, got it...I get the depth wasn't there but he was over 15 seconds back of Herlings at the beginning of the race, once into 3rd he closed close to 10 second gap on him then went on to put another 5-10 seconds on him. Putting almost 20 seconds onto the newly proclaimed FMOTP is somewhat impressive....

It's tough. There are a lot of variables or some would say excuses why this rider or that rider wasn't there or hell even why there were only 23...23 riders in that second Moto. But when will they stop making excuses every race for why this racer or that team wasn't legit? Seriously? If a racer is only as good as their last race then a series can only be as good as their last race, which was one of most hyped up races of the season. Still they only filled HALF the gate. It's not webbs fault the series and promoters failed the racers and couldn't bring the talent to compete against herlings and Webb. If you put an asterisk next to webbs win then you may as well put one next to herlings World Championship against 22 other riders. Sad

As far as being remembered as one of the all time great rides? Don"t think so, for me, the track resembled a county fair race, not an epic, larger than life GP track. The setting is equally important! Glen Helen will provide the proper setting for a GP....too bad Webb & Herlings will not go at it again...

Impressive ride by Webb, but hard to rank towards the top of USGP performances. My frame of reference will date me, though there are so many impressive US performances against absolutely stacked GP (Hall-of-fame) fields. some examples.
- 1978 Tripes. Hannah, Ellis decimating the Unadilla 250 USGP Field. Hannah fell in first turn broke a lever and went from last to 5th in a 45 +2 on a track slightly rougher than current day. Waxed everyone in 2nd. Americans 1-2-3. Carla, Mosiev, Falta etc etc finished behind
-1980 O'Mara took down all comers at a very muddy Mid-Ohio 125 USGP track. Everts, Rond , Geboers Rahier etc etc. finished behind
-1980 Moates wins perhaps the most important USGP - Carlsbad 500 class. The list of guys he beat is staggering.
There are many more examples. Beating Herlings is a great accomplishment, and Webb is going to be a major player in the sport moving forward.

Nope,no one should think Dungey is a 7-9, 6-7, 2-11 guy because of his last appearances in Europe.

Race times

1
Herlings 1,49.026
Webb 1,49.922
Forkner 1,49.971

2
Herlings 1,50.614
Webb 1,49.891
Forkner 1.51.027

From the 2 races,Webb maintained pretty much the same pace,he was as fast in both motos ,whereas Herlings put out significantly slower times in the 2nd race compared to the 1st

Herlings dropped the hammer on Webb with that fastest lap a string of 1.49's and 1.50's
2nd race he only got into the 1.50's 3 times

Whatever is said and done he wasn't quite the same rider, weather he gave 100% or not

Or you could say that has the conditions got worse, Herlings and Forkner times dropped off while Webb was able to get faster....Plus he said himself he was giving it his all, not sure why his fans can't accept this?

It was very impressive! To the point of humbling Herlings, weather he was tired, suffering from jetlag, not 100% fit, and all the other variables, not many people have done that to Herlings. Webb is on a very exclusive list.
There's been so much talk and rubbing salt in the wounds on here lately, people seem to forget about Forkner and his ride. For me, I'd have to say he was most impressive.

The best ridet of the day is determined on the track, not adding numbers in your head on a Tuesday.

Not sure about ranking them but this was a great race overall. My opinion of Herlings has always been high and this race only enhanced it more for me.

Webb and Forkner were both outstanding. I think we just witnessed the future 250 champion for the next few years coming out party and as for Webb this type of ride and win just adds to securing his legacy of US racers IMO.

Tomac crushed it and seemed to have his mojo for this race. Looking forward to the 450 class for next year.

I'll be the first to admit I'm a huge RV van, but If we are talking all-time rides, 2nd year pro RV beating the best in the world-including all the 450s-by over a minute at Budds Creek 2007 MXdN has to rank up there as well.

Awesome ride by Coop, one of his best ever and he's had some great rides in his short pro career.

I cannot wait to see him on a 450 full-time.
He's got the right stuff with his never-give-up attitude and never makes excuses.

He didn't look tired at Assen, but he certainly didn't look at his best, or on the level he was at before his collar bone break, which is understandable after 2 months off. It's obvious that it's going to take a bit of time for anyone to reach their maximum performance level after being off the bike for that long. I would hope people don't think that they saw Herlings at 100% of his ability at Charlotte. He certainly gave it all he could, but that doesn't necessarily mean he was able to be the best he can be.

Got to give credit to Cooper Webb though, he's a racer in every sense if the word. Any races like this that come up, whether it be USGP, MXoN, AUS SX etc. he always excepts the challenge and gives it 100%, and of course there is nothing to say that Webb couldn't have beaten Herlings if he was at his absolute best. He won the overall at the end of the day and that's what the record books will show

We're not talking asterisks, this thread is debating whether or not that second moto it should be considered one of the best of all time.

The number of riders that participate in MX2 yo-yo's throughout the season, The season typically starts with all the strongest riders present and when they move on to the European based GPs the gates are full. But over the course of time injuries and team budgets start to play a factor. When the last two GPs are staged outside of Europe riders and teams who have nothing to gain from racing don't tend to travel either, which means you're left with the situation we have now, with eleven MX2 riders taking to the gate. That's not representative of a typical MX2 field of riders however you slice it.

RV's performance at Budds Creek, O'Maras at Maggiora... even Dungeys ride at Southwick in 2011, those are what I would call 'all time' performances.

Who cant accept what? Im pointing out exactly what you're saying if you care to read it properly,Herlings wasnt the same in moto 2 regardless of giving his all and as many know he'said often faster in that race if conditions allow,Webb charged exactly the same as the 1St race, something he too does, the guy's like a fucking bull

Forkner was faster 2nd Moto too, granted he had a blip and was generally slower that Herlings and Webb so may have let up later on but his times before were similar both motos

Nope,no one should think Dungey is a 7-9, 6-7, 2-11 guy because of his last appearances in Europe. Race times 1 Herlings 1,49.026 Webb 1,49.922 Forkner...

The best ridet of the day is determined on the track, not adding numbers in your head on a Tuesday.
Yeah and by adding the numbers you get the results and they say Herlings was best in 1 race and Webb was in the next,it ain't hard...and it's Wednesday here

+1. I am not a big fan of both but TBH Herlings didnt get challenged like that since Roczen and Musquin. So now I rank Webb's performance next to Roczen and Musquin, which I would not have done before this race. I just hope now that his 450 will be as competitive to go for some podiums in his rookie season.
