Had Herlings not made the mistake, he would have most likely won, but that would also have meant that Anderson wouldn't have been celebrating on the landing of the finish line jump like an idiot, and he would have raced the last race, probably giving USA the win....... I realise that's a lot of if's and but's.

Of course they wanted to win. Do you judge Webb on his results just before and after winning the title? Because he didn't exactly go 1-1. Or do you look at the big picture? I think the same applies here.

It was impressive, yes, but Herlings just won the world championship. There is no way his head was in it to give enough of a shit to be at the top of his game. So I wouldn't read too much into it.
