I know somebody that knows somebody and they heard that from somebody that it was a lot!!
My best friend’s sister’s boyfriend’s brother’s girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who’s going with a girl who saw Cooper pass-out at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it’s pretty serious, cuz he has a deal with Yamaha for like, a lot

How does a contract today compare to A: the top guys of the late 80's like RJ and Ward and B: the early contracts of guys like RC, Stewart, and Windham?

We offered 2 million per year (3x contract) with 2 of largest sponsors and 1 new one in MX/SX as well and never heard back from Webb's agent.. You can start with that..

Probably pretty close to that between monster and Yamaha.

I'm sure his Thor contract is substantial too.
Fun fact, this will mean Cooper Webb has ridden for all three of the big energy drink brands... He was Red Bull for quite a few years as an amateur, then Rockstar, and Monster next year...

Who else has ridden for all three?

Dungey: Monster am, Rockstar and Red Bull as pro...

Who else?

I don't think Barcia is one of them, but Davi definitely is (Red Bull Honda, Rockstar SUSUKI & Monster Kawi).

What about Shorty? Did he ever ride for Rockstar?

He is worth every penny, but he has shown the propensity to make his mind up on leaving if things arent going right. Regardless if he just won a national title or not.

This sport has shown time and time again, that if you've got the ability to win even a moto, you're worth a considerable amount of money. When you're capable of winning a championship at the 450 level, you're worth stupid money. I wouldn't be surprised if $12m is the number.
And, why is $12mil a "stupid amount of money" to earn, especially if you are able to rider the level of guy like KR or Dungey? These guys ride crazy fast on tracks that make even the best pucker. They put their lives on the line at least index every lap. I mean, one miscue & a life can be destroyed. I think $12mil is small potatoes compared to what the best in practically every other professional motorsport you can name.

I didn't mean "stupid" as in undeserved. Just meant they get a LOT of money relative to other riders in 4th through 10th.

And as much as we want it to be, pay isn't relative to risk. The sooner everyone in this industry realizes that, the sooner we can figure out how to actually make rider's pay grow.

Nobody in our sport is getting paid a 12 million dollar contract.

Our sport doesn't carry the most important aspect of sport, and that is fans!! We have none. We are small potatoes in comparison to most all other sports. No fans=no money

If you're quoting somebody, it is imperative that the wording be exact. This is butchery.

12 mil for 5 years is small potatoes compared to other sports.

Bryce Harper is looking at a 500 million dollar deal possibly. That's beyond anything I ever thought.

what's real crazy is he will probably get another huge contract after that one, given how young he is

RJ and Wards top salaries ranged from 4-500 k a year.

RCs last contract was a rumored 5 mill a year.

This is a topic I have hoped Gibby or Matthes had some interest in as well. I have always wondered what types of money they are getting. Overall. I was at Competitive Edge a few years ago, and Travis Preston was there and was running a class with a couple of people. He was just in a newer Dodge pickup and not sure why but it got me thinking of how much these guys had earned. I wondered if someone in the 2nd tier (an Ivan Tedesco, Blake Baggett, Kyle Chisolm, or...oh..a Nick Wey) or whatever had enough money to really retire. I see the land like Blake has in the videos and wonder, how much he'd have to earn to buy something like that with multiple tracks. I have also wondered how much are win bonuses and the like. Just as a curiosity thing and not to judge if it was too much or not enough.

As far as Blake goes, I believe he said somewhere that he spent all of his 2012 MX championship money on El Chupacabra Ranch.

Are you sure about RJ and Wardy's salaries? I remember how amazed everyone was when Damon BRADSHAW signed what was then, the biggest contract ever at $450K/yr, if I remember right. Around 1991/1992.

Tedesco, Wey and Preston were getting paid at a good time for the sport 2000-08. I would think that they must have had to make some very good investments to be retired for ths rest of their lives though. Blakes land, trailers and roached dozer prob cost as much as a 2000sqft house in a nice neighborhood in socal.

I dont think anyone tells Matthes how much they make because they know he has a big mouth.
