I love the people saying the YZ hasn't changed in over decade because it doesn't need to be changed lol whyd I sell my 06 Kawi??? It was the best 250F in 2006, it didn't need changed either!

Oh agree, nor does the yz125 need changed. But the bling factor on the KTMs tends to lure people.

Another consideration may be to find. '13-'14 250SX with the CC forks instead of the 4CS. They are much cheaper and easier to get revalved. I had mine done at Kreft who did an awesome job. His 4cs work is great too but that is where a lot of people get their $1500 revalve number from. For the CC forks though, I paid less than $500 for forks and shock and that is the norm for the CC forks everywhere else that I called. So just a thought when a lot of people here will say don't buy a ktm because it's going to cost over a grand to get the suspension done, with the '13-'14 it's not the case.

Simple solution....Ohlins Cartrides....$1,100. Use them a few years....folks will be standing in line to give you $700 at resale.

2017 KTM's will be here soon and it's going to be completely changed. Probably 4 lbs lighter like 125 was.

I think you mean '12 to '13. Pretty sure 2014 is 4CS.

I'm happy with my CC forks, just as good as what was on my Kawi before.

I think that bike is going to be very popular to the point where people that want one...will not be getting one.

Is the husky going to be a year behind like normal?

it is funny to read the comments and how people view things .

yes i have a TM for the main reason i like the look of them and wanted to be a bit different when i get to the track, my surprise the bike is incredible , everyone who has tried it as said the same thing , its a little stiffer than the KTM but the faster you ride it the better it handles , the engine is great with loads or torque but still revs and makes power up top .

as far as the SX - YZ thing goes , i had the KTM SX 250 2015 and a guy brought his 2016 YZ to the track , he asked me to test it and see what i thought , in all honesty i thought it was shit , brakes were crap , clutch felt horrible , power signed off way to early and it was like hitting a brick wall when it did , it didn't have great front end feel or feed back and suspension was ok but nothing special . it me it felt old and cheap and the build quality was crap .

also my mate that rides enduro, redbull romanics etc , his normal ride is a KTM 300 SX and KTM 300 XC , he had seen that yamaha was bringing out the WRX or what ever its called , so i asked if he could try the bike as well . He did 3 laps on it and absolutely hated it , same exact things i said and more .

maybe it because we have been riding KTM's for a few years and used to the feel , power and chassis , but the YZ would want to be half the price of the KTM before i would even think of owning one , i was really disappointed in it

goes to show what you are used to makes a big difference in how you feel about a bike .

saying all that ride both and come up with your own feeling on what one to go for
I had a 02 125sx back in the day so maybe that's why I had no problem adapting to the new one after being on jap bikes for years. Took no time at all to adapt to my 13 250sx (my frist 250 2 stroke to) didn't notice any difference between revalved cc and stock 4cs on my 15 250sx. Thought they were both decent but not great forks. Just got a new yz250 for this year. No time to adapt, felt better then the cockpit on the ktm. I think the brakes are pretty good actually, doesn't have the bottom hit of the ktm but pulls harder up top and keeps pulling. Suspension felt way better and I feel like it handles/turns just as good as the ktm.

Point of this story is 2 people have 2 completely different experiences, asking people what they think will only get you so far. Go ride them both, find a demo day and get some decent time on both before you buy.

Demo days can be hit or miss.

I just did a Yamaha demo day recently and the bikes were set up so poorly it was a joke. While I was sitting on the new YZ250 I had to adjust out 3/4 inch of play in the throttle. The bars were ridiculously low and the suspension felt like it was set for a 130 pound rider. No one had bothered to do any basic setup on the bike, actually 4 out of the 6 bikes were in similar shape. I don't expect custom tailoring done for each rider but c'mon ... at least do the basic stuff. No one would ride a bike with the bars rotated that low. And how about at least putting the clickers somewhere in the middle of the range.

All made for an extremely poor impression of the bike.

I don't know how much the parent company, Yamaha, monitors these things but it seemed like some dealer was running the show and doing the bare minimum, not caring about what the potential customers thought of the product.

Correct, I love the CC forks on my '11.

My buddy just got the full works from MX Tech front and rear ($1200 :ohmySmile on his new husky 250 two smoker. He is not happy with it, says it is to stiff...I have a bit of speed on him, and it the best two stroke I have ever ridden. The suspension and handling fit me like a glove.....but it costs an additional $1k on top of a brand new bike.

Factory connection did the suspendion on my Ktm 250sx and it turned out great. Cost me $800 total.

I agree and not everyone knows someone willing to let you try a bike you're interested in buying.

Forgot to mention I had a 13 and 15 250sx that I clocked over 200 hours on combined. The yz is at 17 hours and I'm impressed so far. I did fry the clutch plates at 15 hours and I just got done doing fork seals. The clutch idk, I changed oil every 2 hours and kept a lot of free play on the lever. I blew my seals on the 4cs 2nd ride so that I'm not concerned about. My 13 had just shy of 150 hours and I never even took off the clutch cover, defiantly wins in the clutch department. I still don't think the brakes are that bad, I'll eventually do a braided cable and galfer skw rotor though.

Wow, 15 hours? Did you check the pressure plate, springs, baskets? Something isn't right there. I still have the stock clutch in my 2012 150..

The YZ250 ergo's are not for everyone. I have a 16, and will be letting it go in the next few weeks.
Couldn't get comfortable on it. Chassis is just too tall and stiff. I thought its ability to corner was pretty shit.. my old KX250 handles much better for me, even without the SSS I'd choose my KX over the YZ.
If I were to buy a YZ again, it would be a steely.

Everything looks fine. I ran out of play on the perch around 10 hours or so and had to adjust the cable to get more. Then I got ebc heavy duty springs and I think rode it for 3-4 rides before it went. I went with hinson plates and springs, if it happens again I'm buying a full hinson kit. Funny thing is next sat I fried the clutch in my rm125 at the same track, that thing was on its last leg though.

I've been running belray gear saver for years now but changing oil every 2 rides gets expensive. Some of my friends use rotella in the 450s, anyone using it in the 2 strokes? I would change it every ride or even between motos if I do 3-4 classes.

I use to run belray gear saver, zero problems going 5~10 hours between changes. Now run motul, works just as well.

Big fan of rotella t in my 15 250sx. I just change it every couple hours. Clutch and shifts always feels smooth.

I built a sweet '06 Honda CR250 a few years back and after my boy rode it he got the 2 stroke bug and wanted a 250 smoker. I did all the research and like you narrowed it down to the YZ or KTM. I ended up going with a very clean '13 YZ250 which I picked up for half the price of a new '16 model. It already had some performance parts (PC pipe and silencer) restyle plastic, fresh dunlop rubber and new chain and sprockets, so I just upgraded the brakes (270mm rotor and fresh pads) and put a one tooth larger rear sprocket on it and it was good to go. The YZ was just right from the word go, the power and handling are good and the suspension is amazing. Who knows what the '17 KTM is going to be like but unless it is much better than the '16 KTM I would still go with the YZ. I don't know if you are looking for a new bike but clean or near new YZ's are a bargain that is hard to beat.

I've had a YZ and now a KTM.
The KTM ist superior in handling, engine, parts, reliability. All of my friends had to redo the gears on the YZ, me included. Never was a KTM guy, but I wouldn't buy a YZ when I can get a SX. As far as suspension goes, I had mine valved be MX-Tech, better then any YZ SSS stuff I had before. And I would rather spend a few bucks on setting the suspension right for my (or your) weight and style, then miss the handling, brakes, clutch and whatever on the KTM.

Like I said, I have both, compared them head to head and couldn't believe how much better the KTM was!

My opinion.....I had a 2015 KTM 250SX that I bought new at the end of 2014. I sent the suspension away for my weight and riding ability. I rode the bike for about 15 hours and never felt comfortable. This year I bought a leftover 2014 YZ250 and love the bike. I have a 2016 KTM450SXF as my race bike but the KTM 2 stroke was not up to par with the YZ. I have no agenda on which bike you buy but my opinion after owning both bikes is to go with the awesome YZ250. The bike is almost perfect and so much fun to ride. Suspension is great and the rest of the bike is put together well. Awesome bike

.....but definitely down on power. I have the FMF pipe and silencer/ Moto Tasinari setup.....very little noticeable difference.

Actually the YZ 125 needs to be a 150 just like the KTM. It's long overdue.

Exact same scenario here. Didnt put much time on my 15 250 sx. Sold it and bought a 16 yz. Clutch was nice and had good power but jetting was horrendous. Suspension was so so after sending it out but not as good as my yz. Spent countless hours and money tweaking the ktm but i gave up. Yz is gas and go for me.

Far from. There's a reason it hasnt been changed and still gets amazing reviews from MXA, racerx, etc. The KTM while fancier looking and has some nice trick bling parts still dosent handle as well as the YZ (I owned both). Sure the KTM puts out in the HP but the suspension is terrible and there's a reason why the YZ125 is adored by so many, look at the 125 class/school boy at your next race, there are just as many if not more YZs than Husky/KTMs especially for being 10 years without a major update.

isn't it (possibly) a bad idea to get a bike when its a new model? Since maybe they haven't worked the bugs out?

Are you saying that with the FMF and reed set up there is now little noticeable difference to the ktm or the pipe and reeds made little noticeable difference?
