Dang.... The Mississippi/ Lousiana market is dirt cheap after seeing everyone elses averages. Some cherry 125's around here for 900-1600 everyday. 250's between 1200-2500. I picked up a clean 03 rm125 with tons of stuff already on it, carbon ignition and clutch covers, frame guards, RG3 suspension front and rear, flat top piston, tons of other stuff, $850. Rides like a champ. Picked up a super clean 06 yz250 mint bike, $1400. Not to mention the 01 cr250 i got my son about a month ago for $1600
Man, I don't know where in Louisiana you are, but I need to watch your craigslist more often! I'm in New Orleans; I can't find anything worth buying...

Check this one out. I tell him it's a 97 and proceed to offer him accordingly and he writes back and says, "Your an idiot and no." Should I write back and say, "Did you mean you're?"

Im in Mississippi, i dont see much in nola, but, Monroe, Shreveport, north Ms, Mobile, Gulfport, Hattiesburg, always something decent. Pensacola and Ft Walton Beach have nice bikes fairly often as well. Several RM's in the Florida panhandle the last few months for killer prices. Gulf Shores had an 06 KX250 looked like it had been ridden maybe 20 minutes for $2200. Cases were perfect, stock everything. They are out there.

I've been looking for a 125 project bike for a little while now, and the pure bullshit I see on Craigslist is really grinding my gears. Every bike has a "fresh top end with 3-5 hours on it" and is "completely rebuilt"....when in all reality they just are roached out turds. I see a bunch of 2003-2005 Kawi 125's and steel frame Yami's for $3k+....which, in my opinion, is just ludicrous for a 10-15 year old clapped 125. it also amazes me how many people do not even know the year of their machine.

I am blaming you two stroke jabronis for allowing these dummies to think that every two stroke out there is made of gold. Shit, I bought an '06 Kawi 250 last year for $1800 and it is absolutely mint, with a whole pile of extra parts.

End of mid day belly ache session
I hear you. I've been on the lookout for a project 125 as well (Ontario Canada) Nothing but sacked out pieces of crap that people think are gold. Pricing for early 90's to early 2000's averaging $2000 to $3500. Virtually everything is labelled as 'mint' or my personal fav….'better than new' Can someone explain how a 1993 KX125 that has been neglected, looped out and ghost ridden for 20+ years is better than new? Grinning My search continues.

I'm seeing the same thing around here. I saw a '92 CR250 for sale the other day and the guy wants $2100. There was this "Cons: needs new tires and 4 spokes in rear rim." But I'm sure one can look past that because it is (of course) a "Very very fast bike". It does get old and tiresome after awhile.

Picked this up in '13, from the Marietta, Ohio area. Was originally advertised on Craigslist for $2000, when I called, the price was down to $1200. At that point, 7 people had called, beat the guy up over the phone, and then never showed up. He just kept dropping his price, and the last offer was what I could've had it for. I couldn't screw the kid that bad, and he needed money to fix his truck. Paid him extra to store it for a month, since I was flying back to the Patch in 2 days, and couldn't pick it up. I've watched the market change to exactly what you're describing, if you're going to find something like this, you'll pay out the ass.

Are these expensive 125's actually selling though?

I got 1700 for my pretty clean 02 CR125 in January in Michigan which I thought was a good deal for both parties.

Looking this morning everything is priced sky high...and all of them likely need work of some kind.

500's justify the high price, only because there is an extremely limited supply and the 06+ YZ250 because its still being produced.

Back in 2013 I decided to get back into riding after taking 5 years off. Had never raced a big bike 2 stroke (moved off 85s in 01 to YZ250F..) so I decided to look for a 2 stroke 250. Well came across this bike which was just down the road from my house. 05 YZ250 for 2200 bucks. Bike was mint. Thats the stock rear tire and chain and sprockets. Guy used it to follow his kid around in the trails.

Fast forward to 2015. Ive put an entire race season on the bike, but also rebuilt it from the ground up including SSS suspension oversized tank ect...Sold it for 3750

I also found my RM250 on facebook for 1500. It needed some TLC but was still in really good condition. Fortunately the guy got tired of the PC Works pipe rusting so he spray painted it LOL.

My 05 YZ125 i traded some kid across for an old 06 KX450 (with a busted shock..) I had gathering dust in the back of the shop.

That's how it is in Canada. Except with every bike.

One guy even had in his description "air filter cleaned every 20 hours".

Not true you just have to look hard and BRING cash don't 'Would ya take' over the phone.

I got a 2013 kx250f with the tits still on the original tires for $4000 Canadian US$2,986.47 and just got a 2010 kx450f with lots of extra's for $3500 Canadian US$2,613.16[/u]

Yep tons of junk out there and everyone thinks they have gold. Like said, all "brand new overboard(sic) piston" or the famous "clutch aint workin right but it just needs a cable and it's only 20 bucks but I just don't have time to fix it"... or the well-loved "no title, but I'll write ya a bill of sale".

The Honda 2-strokes are the worst. These guys think they are frickin collectors items. The YZ's and KTM's are still made and they are better than any used Honda 2-stroke available.

I've actually slowed down the 2-stroke demand a little by allowing some nostalgic old guys to ride my YZ125 and YZ250. They read all the buzz on line and start thinking they want to do a CL fixer upper. I let them try mine and a few of them pulled back in after like 1 lap and said "man, I have no idea how we rode these back in the day" or "I have no idea how you guys rode these" from the guys who got in the sport after the 4-stroke era.

Don't even bother trying to inform these dildoes that they're off by almost a decade lol. I've seen 92 yz125s listed as 02s and 96 RM's listed as 03s. I even post pics in their threads (facebook buy and sell mostly) and they'll tell me I'm wrong and to mind my own business lol. Fucking hillbilly pieces of garbage.

I'm so tired of those kind of stupid ads. I'd much rather have a short and precise ad of the bikes condition than some idiot trying to be a comedian.

Same here in Texas. 2 strokes seem to be growing in popularity. I switched from a 4 stroke to two stroke about 3 years ago and love the change. I do miss the low end power on the 450, but everywhere else, the 250 2t really helps me out.
This! I LOVE being back on a smoker! I see plenty of them at the tracks. They will never die

I was specifically shopping for a lightly used late model ktm, finally came across the right one but I waited a while and paid a fair price for it. I don't really know what the market is like on the last of the hon, kawi, and suz around here

I sold my 09 KTM 125SX last night for $1800. Check the Ohio Motocross Sales page on Facebook. Good deals pop up from time to time. Just be patient.

2000 KX250 I got for $500 from a neighbor. Had the suspension revalved and replaced a bunch of small stuff, now it feels brand new. I have $1600 total into it now. Craigslist is crazy, I'm seeing the same bike for as high as $2900, roached.

Right now there are some crazy prices in the NE for 2 strokes. Took me almost a year to find a 250 2t. I ended up getting a well used 04 rm250 for $1800 last year put about 2k in it so far. Normally people want $2500 or higher for clapped out older 250s. I don't think some people realize how quickly they depreciate and if you rebuild them don't expect to make a profit. I try not to switch bikes often cause selling them is worse than buying.
Yep...

Most are pure crap.

YZ125H1 has his act together concerning costs. Many are money pits. But...

I recently bought my 2005 CR125R for $1600 EXPECTING to throw a ton of cash at it. All I wanted to do was see if it started and ran. Was GTG.

Amazingly, it had great compression. 175 psi after 17 kicks cold. Don't care, yippie shit. All will be replaced and repaired as best I can to a known good condition. It IS my machine, after all.

I am on vacation, and hand detailing EVERY part, replacing many parts that are still serviceable. It is only $$$ and time. You can spend all that how you deem fit. Plus, it is a hell of a lot of fun ensuring everything is done correctly by YOU. Can't blame "That Asshole".

I think it is unrealistic to find a 10+ year old amateur owned bike in prime riding condition. Some get "lucky", I guess. I never plan on "Luck". Just hard work, and love of labor to get it RIGHT.

I'll have $3000+ or so into the bike overall, but certainly will know where it stands and roll with confidence.

Thats how it is in the menifee area too. Bikes are trashed amd people want top dollar for the 2 strokes. I bought a 04 rm 125 from a buddy of mine for $1,100. Bike had been sitting for a good 3-4 years but he was a slow weekend warrior type rider. Tore it down to the frame and greased everything and put a new top end, v force reeds, had the suspension redone, new plastics and air box for it too. Hopefully be riding it in the next month or so.

Ill post picks when i get closer to being done. I still need a new gas tank. One of the bolt holes is really jacked up and since i got new plastics ill probably get a new tank or a good looking one off of ebay. I still need to get some little stuff like works connection radiator braces, works connection clutch perch, over sized bar mounts, renthal twin walls and etc.... the 04 zuk was my first big bike, kind of why i wanted to get it. My dad had a 134 kit with a vortex ignition and that thing really ripped. My plan for it is to do the 04 factory suzuki look with the yellow rims. Clean and simple not too crazy looking.

mxjon,

I know you mentioned one of the gas tank bolt holes is messed up but if you want to have your tank looking like new check out this guy's method (he has an add'l video on his youtube channel as well). Time consuming for sure but it'll look brand new when done. Cheap as well. All it requires is some varying grits of sandpaper and a buffing wheel/pad. I'm going to give this a try on my '97 CR 125 tank (when I find the ambition lol).
