You can tell me that marijuana is safe and I am uneducated and uninformed all day long....I have first hand knowledge that this is not the case and thousands of teens are being misled by this myth. I have lived the damage of marijuana and thankfully the individual in my life is seeing the impact on his life and is turning things around. And its not just me....there are many parents in the same boat as me...just ask around. In what I have experienced, the impact on lives is dramatic, complete and utter change in attitude and personality, no amount of medical research will convince me that what I lived and experienced was a myth. If you want to believe it, its your life, your choice...but please don't assume that everyone you preach to is uninformed.
I think he is talking about using it for pain management vs opiates.

What people need to worry about is all the riders getting strung out on pain killers, if they don't care about that, they definitely wont care about pot.

Quite honestly Marijuana is the safest alternative for pain management there is. None of the side effects or dependency issues we've seen with opiates and other pain medicines. It's sad to see the inexperience people have with this subject and the views they've developed from that. The research that's being limited by federal law isn't helping either, but when scientific and medical research can be completed on a widespread basis I think what most already know will be clear: It's a safe and effective alternative for pain management as well as a legitimate aid for many medical conditions. The negative stigma associated with it and it's effects come from the uneducated, inexperienced and misinformed.

The most dangerous thing you can do is think behind the times. Hold values and views that are no longer applicable or realistic to current standards and understandings. Information is ever evolving, as should be our knowledge and opinions generated from it.

Thanks for this - I work in this industry and the largest problem is uneducated and unexperienced opinions.

Would you go on Yelp and review a restaurant you've never visited? No. What makes it okay to publicly express opinions that have no legitimacy or relevance to the times we are presently in, and heading toward?

Uncle Tony - The only coward I see is you, don't talk down to something you know nothing about. Sure most of these guys are recreational users but I guarantee few use it for pain and/or mental illness.

If it doesn't bother you or you don't see the harm, ride on. If it bothers you or you feel unsafe around those riders, I can understand you maybe mentioning it to management and getting their position on the issue but I think involving law enforcement is going too far. If it bothers you that much and management allows it to continue, simply go and give someone else your $30. There is no need to potentially jam someone up over something you don't like.

Me personally, I don't do it but I also don't care. I've never seen someone so stoned that they were a hazard on the track. I have, however, seen plenty of 50's out with the big bikes, total beginners in over their head with more experienced riders, quads and track equipment that pose a much greater risk to everyone's safety.

This is America my friend I could say what I want, you don't like it don't read it, I like how people on this site are quick to call someone they don't know names that's a clear sign of ignorance, if I call someone getting stoned BEFORE they race a coward I'm my eyes they are nothing more, sorry you don't like it, 6 pages of Austin stroupes drug use, I could bet it started with pot

And for the record I'm not anti-pot I'm for smoking if that's what you do, I don't drink and get on my bike I would expect the same from a pot head

It's funny, smoking or chewing tobacco will put me on my ass and make me feel drunk. The few times I have had any experience with marijuana it did not alter my perception at all. I did sleep like a baby that night.

Nothing wrong with it, it affects some people different so it's up to the user if they can operate a bike safely on a crowded track. Obviously don't want to be taking bong rips of hash oil or eating an edible before but a little toke of some sativa dominate bud would be perfect. I've been doing it for years and know plenty of people who also have. We are not the guys you see riding above there own limits crossing lines everywhere out on the track. It's up to that person to decide but with anything else in life people make bad decisions and put others at risk.

Few years ago we were at a track, end of the day everyone else left. I'm getting ready to take my gear off having a beer. Friend comes up and insists I try his bike. I had one beer, go out and first jump I almost endo myself very badly. Pulled off After that and never had a sip of beer before riding again

I would think operating a motor vehicle under any kind of influence is unwise, never mind a 55 hp high performance machine one can easily throw 30-60 feet into the air with a crack of the throttle. If you are on your own property, by yourself, fill your boots man, but if you are riding/racing with others then I would think you are obligated to have your full wits about you. I fail to see how this is a good idea.

I don't smoke pot anymore, but when I did I found I could focus in closer on whatever task I was doing. Some people on the other hand are just plain dangerous when they are stoned. I don't think you should do it when you are racing with others, save it for when you get home or when you arn't doing anything thst is inherently dangerous. You owe being safe and in control to your moto brothers!

I think the question was about getting stoned and riding at the track. Not a debate on the medical benefits of cannabis

Yep, its that focus on task at hand.
...and talk about running away from the pack, sheeesh...the one time I raced with it I had opened up a half lap lead and was totally killing it!... until I was black flagged for leaving the gate with the C class.

Yep you tend to focus in on one thing and ignore others. Some people tend to focus in on thst cloud thst looks like a bunny when their driving down the freeway!!!! Stuff like driving, racing and using chainsaws are best done when sober and alert! Leave the pot for listening to music or playing video games Smile

Oh man what a different time that was! I saw some top names having a toke on practice days at Saddleback & the Dunes and in the pits after races. At the 1977 Anaheim SX I saw two top guys passing the reefer in the parking lot before the main! Neither did particularly well that night.

I would say most here buy into stereo type and don't actually know much about the drug..

There's many different strands and not all "stoners" are your stereo typical stoner. If you met me like many people have you wouldn't know if I was stoned or not. Weed actually helps me in many aspects of my life

I'm a product of racing in the 70's & 80's...and there was dope everywhere, when I started racing. Not any of the hard stuff (that I saw), but lots of weed. I've done it all, or almost all (except the "H" thing)...so I'm far from being a prude or judgemental. One thing I never did, however, was race when I was high. I just never thought I'd be safe doing it. And, I don't think those that race around me would be either...although I'm sure many were on the track with me that I never knew about.

I wouldn't want to be on the track with anyone that I knew was under the influence of anything...no matter what, even excessive alcohol. Racing is dangerous enough, and having people around you whose judgement and perception is altered by any substance just makes is worse.

If the OP were me, I'd say something to the track owner or manager. If he blew you off, or acted like he didn't GIF, then I'd find another track to ride on. That's just me though...

Quite the opposite actually. In fact many pro gamers smoke pot to improve performance. However I don't know how people can smoke and do intense physical activity like MX, as it can increase your heart rate a lot and make you feel very dizzy.

Guilty here. 95% of the time I rode I smoked on the way to the track before practice or races and in between them as well. But I smoked constantly in my late teens and early 20's and it helped me stay more focused and relaxed racing and at work. Better then the guys Id see killing a 12 pack throughout the day between motos imo.
Or don't do either when you choose to ride. But that's be too easy and make too much sense. Fuckin' pathetic.

So is alcohol, but it should be against all the rules when you go to the track. Being legal has nothing to do with the dangers it causes while operating a vehicle.

I've had friends who I know smoked before riding. Never did that though. To each his own, personally, I don't want to be on a track with anyone under the influence of anything.
That being said, everyone probably has some background experimenting. Most of us move on as we get older and take on more responsibility. Especially when you become responsible for others beyond just ourselves. It just changes a person.

He must be smoking some bullshit. This reminds me of those D.A.R.E movies where little johnny got straight A's then picks up a joint and his life is ruined. Marijuana doesn't do that, if someone has a shitty attitude they have a shitty attitude.

However sorry to hear of your bad experiences. Hope that turns around.

Prior to my new career I used marijuana for school and work (motorcycle shops), I have the typical Moto A.D.D. however my body doesn't work with Aderal or any other meds. Marijuana helped me focus. I rode a few times like that, but didnt want everyone to be like "Oh he stacked his trash b/c he was high." so I just decided to be slow...

Just like any alcohol or prescription drug, marijuana can affect people differently. The problem with your line of thinking is that your bad experience has impaired your ability to view the the drug with a unbiased open mind. Marijuana has changed my life drastically for the good and my wife and children would agree
3/15/2016 8:20am
im 5 more years, this won't even be a topic worth discussing. There are plenty of the guys racing SX/MX that smoke weed on occasion, but anyone who actually thinks that it's not going to slow them down, is kidding themselves. I've ridden after smoking and thought to myself "I'm riding better than I usually do today", but I only thought that because I was high ! Lol

Exactly. Key word though is "most." Unfortunately some people never grow up. Anyone condoning operating any motor vehicle while under the influence of any controlled substance or alcohol is immature. Period. They can argue all they want and try to justify it, but that's the fact. Once you start putting a drug or alcohol over your own life and other peoples' lives that typically means you're an asshole and need to grow up.

Blame W.R. Hearst for the anti-marijuana propaganda back in the day. Hemp (no measurable THC) was a huge threat to his paper business, so he went after it with all guns blazing.

He did finance/make "Refer Madness" to make the general public fear the refer.
