Trading RMZ...which 250cc 2 stroke bike

So I am trading my 2014 RMZ450 for a 250cc 2 stroke. I've had a few offers:

1) 06 RM250+$1500 boot. Appears to be in very good condition. Has FMF exhaust, and recent top end rebuild, oversize front brake, and asv levers. Revalved suspension.

2) 2005 KX250 + $1200 boot - looks immaculate, has ARC levers, full pro circuit exhaust, fresh top end rebuild, fresh PC team graphics and seat cover, and revalved suspension.

3) 2013 kx450 - looks really nice. Has FMF exhaust. I know it's a 450 but it was a trade offer I received. I do like the looks of the kawi's! I've rode a 2011 kx45o and it felt bulky and not very agile but had a nice engine. Have not rode the 2013 yet with the air forks.

I just don't get to ride as much as I'd like with kids so I just wanted to downgrade and just have something cheap and fun to ride when I do get the chance to ride. I ride both MX and Woods.

I have not rode any of the bikes.

Trade for a late model ktm 250F 2014 or 15. These bikes are way overlooked and so fun to ride. I did it for my kx450f. Not looking back.......Never considered it until I took one for a ride. Try one.

A two stroke will be by far the most fun. I'd go with the RM

I haven't ridden an rm but the handling on my cr250 is amazing! You may have to give the engine some attention but there's tons of info on little things you can do to get it where you want. Personally, I installed a torque wing in the carb to give it more bottom end and I couldn't be happier

I have a 2013 RMZ 450 and a 2006 RM 250, I can count on one hand the number of times I've ridden the 450 since buying the 250 a little over a year ago. I've never had so much fun on a bike and I really think it brought a lot of the love I had for riding back.

Of those choices the only 1 I would consider would be the RM. I really don't like how the newest KX's handled.

Sell your bike and purchase a YZ. I know it's more work but I think you'd be happiest in the long run.

I really like the CR's too after you get the motor straightened out. I had one I was doing a build on. I had some titanium on it, psf2 air forks, etc. I ended up parting most of it out though since the project was getting to be too expensive and my wife just had a baby. If I could find another CR, I'd probably choose it.

I'm just not a huge fan of the YZ ergos. However it has been a while since I've rode one. I just remember riding a yz250 about 10 years ago and hating the way it felt ergonomics-wise.

How does the RMZ450 and the RM250 compare? I know the 2014 and 2013 bikes are pretty much the exact same bike.

What kind of riding do you do?

I personally like the KX 250 option...those bikes fit me very well. The RM 250 is also a good choice...but some parts are starting to get rare/expensive.

Well I have the 06" RC replica RM 250 and I freakin love the thing. Rode it for the first time last spring and then only rode my Kawi 450 once during the entire summer. I rode the RM all summer long and had more fun on that thing than anything else I've ridden since...well , my last 250 2 stroke in 2001 haha. I loved my 450's , but I needed a change , and that RM was worth every single penny.

I am however planning on picking up a 2016 YZ250 here in the summer sometime. Keeping the RM as of right now. I'll ride both.

Sold a 2009 rmz 250 two years ago and bought a 2004 cr 250. fully dissasembled it. changed whatever was needed. didsome engine work , clutch and a new top end. i like this bike better than the thumper.

Forgot to ask : What is this $1500.00 and $1200.00 boot thing? Meaning they will give you the bike + that amount for the trade of your RMZ? Figuring that's what it is , but just making sure.

I have a 13 kx450 and 2 yz250's. The kx was bought only cause I was looking for some more power in the sand. It is lighter and handles better then an 11 (buddy has one). It is still a fat pig compared to my yz's and makes me feel lazy. I prefer everything about the two strokes. Fit my riding style better. I'd say get the RM or sell and wait for the 17 250sx.

If you're like me...a KTM won't work. I prefer the feel of the Jap bikes myself. I know the KTM's are beyond awesome , but they just don't feel right under me. That...and yeah they cost a lot.

Hah...... That would be my suggestion too! If for no other reason than its still in production so parts will be available for a long time to come. I'm a senior C offroad and trail rider, so I am not qualified to compare them to 450's at a competitive level on the MX track..... but I do love mine!

The 05 kx250 motor is awesome!!! I've had mine for 12 years and she's still going strong. The forks sucked though. That was the only issue we had with it. Luckily our 06 kx450 blew up so we snagged the triple clamps and forks off of that. If you go with the Kx you won't be disappointed

Out of those choices you have listed (I cant believe other here have said other bikes when you clearly only have a choice of the 3) .... I would go for the RM personally.

out of those options, id go with the rm250, i love mine.
Nimble, can be made to tractor like a 450 with a good low end set up (fmf gnarly, aggressive gearing) and still pull to the top. only downside in my opinion (same as my '15 450) is the misshifts in the tranny. which wasnt a deal breaker for me, just have to shift more aggressively than other bikes.

out of any 250.... the current gen of 250sx is pretty amazing... id look for one of those versus a 10 year old rm Wink

I'd go w/ the RM and add a 10oz ffw

I have both and mostly use the RMZ for site laps while the track is wet and to pace my self for some of the jumps...

I set both my bikes up to feel the same since I was going back and forth. Same RMZ- bend of fat bars, grips, and W/C clutch perch... Feels way better now w/ the fat bars (more flex- less vibration)

The one thing about the RM it made you more aggressive with any tight line/ inside line because you could put in anywhere you wanted. Which translated right back to when I hopped back on the RMZ

Just do it! You'll have no regrets

Plus at the end of the day it's feels like 50lbs lighter when you load your truck up compared the a non- smoker !! Wink






Plus the RM was bike of the year between 04-06, and the YZ is just BNG. J/K...
Just update the front plastics and get new BNG and you'll have yourself a 2016
