Guys, even if he gets stronger he needs starts. This isn't the 250 class where you can start 10th or 15th and move your way up to the front.

Roczen, Dungey, anderson, reed, and canard are not going to fade late in the race either. Start is key, a top 5 start is about what Tomac needs every week.

What was amazing about the whoops was how they really affected so many except Christian Craig! He went up the right side almost every lap and was money all night! The Hondas usually aren't as stable as the others thru the whoops but Craig and his bike got thru em no problem!

You guys crack me up with speculating what's wrong with Eli Tomac. I dislocated my shoulder 3 years ago riding and it still affects my shoulder strength. Just now am I feeling like I am actually recovering....3 years later... Eli and his team should be very content with a podium a couple races in.

The conspiracy theories come from a vacuum of information. If information like this is floating around the industry/pits, then why has it been hidden from the public? So, the fans are the only ones not informed? It seems really strange to me. If you know this, then it's safe to say that Tomac's competition knows it. Why has everyone that reads this board, and racerx and pulpmx, etc. had to speculate for the past several weeks about Tomac? Why has there not been a simple interview where Tomac was asked about his challenges eliciting a specific response? Why did he not just say this on the podium last night?

You're right, it's pretty simple and reasonable, but we are all unaware until your post. Thanks, by he way...

He also hit a wall because the race was longer: if 50 second lap times equal 20 laps, 1:03 lap times equals 23 laps

Isnt Tomac almost racing like he always has in SX? He might not have his fitness where he wants but he has never been dominating like he did outdoors last year. He is a much faster outdoor rider. As i recall he used to be a 2nd,3rd,4th and some 1st, rider on the Honda aswell.

He let her dance a few times in the whoops and wisely backed off. I don't see anything wrong with that.
Right. Just like dungey didn't kill himself trying to catch roczen. He was perfectly content with slamming out a 2nd with the championship in the future more important.

No, no. Most likely it is true. For best lap times, Tomac ran a 1.02.6 and Dungey ran a 1.02.7, so it's clearly down on .......Wait.

That Kawi looked like it was trying to kill him in the whoops...
That was insane! He was so out of shape, he wadded that green bike up and had a horrendous crash. The only thing is ET3 has zero quit in him and never let go of the bars...rode out of it like a boss!

Tomac is a bit like Stew in SX (but not in style at all). When he and the bike are in the groove..he is on another level..yes even in SX. Watch some of the races from last year.

2015 Detroit Dunge was P1 1st lap, and Eli got a P3 start...Took the lead on lap 5, and won by 11s. Someone who is just 'meh' in SX does not start P3...pass the best guy..and win by 11s. NJ ELi and RD start P5 and P6. Eli wins by 12.8 S. Detroit and NJ were the two most dominant performances of the year by far He also seems to be very good on physical Mickey Mouse tracks where he can just bash things, OJ, and ride physical. .

It takes a lot of time to get things dialed in. Look how long it took for Honda to get the bike working for him...and look what happened when they did (2015 MX).

His performance in 2016 is very strong considering the severity of his injury.

The dude scores a third behind Kenny and the fastest Dungey we've ever seen, and ya'll acting like he's washed up. If reed, anderson, seely, canard, barca or stew put in that same ride nobody would be batting an eye. Tomac has 5 gates with 1 podium on two new shoulders and a new brand on its first year of a major redesign. Get off his ass.

It was a smart ride from Tomac I thought, and s much needed podium. It was a little strange how he went from looking like he could win it, to looking over his shoulder for Dungey in the space of a couple of laps, but I think he realised that he'd given his all to try and Roczen and hadn't quite made it happen and made a couple of mistakes. It was good to see him ride smart, he obviously realises that there is a lot to be gained from finishing all the races and getting better each week

How do you know which factory bikes are down on HP? Have you ridden them all or seen dyno charts?

There's no way Eli is suffering from a fitness or stamina issue.

Not being physically strong enough yet from his recovery, or the bike not quite being where he wants it.

The kid was probably chasing cardio the second he could post op.

Wait wait wait

In two sentences, you said his fitness was not an issue, but then said he's not strong enough? Bro, do you even read some of the shit you type out before you click the "submit" button?

We all know that nothing replaces riding when it comes to riding fitness (be that strength, cardio level, etc.). He could have been in Tour shape before ever swinging a leg over his Kawi and still would be winded from riding.

I can actually easily answer this conundrum after speaking to one of his guys on Thursday.

Eli started testing with weak shoulders and couldn't ride with a very stiff fork, so the setup was soft and diving... to cure this, they raked the bike out a bit... lowered the rear and made some changes. This took the constant weight off the front and allowed it to be more stable and hold up better, while keeping a softer setting for when he hit stuff. Now it doesn't have enough weight on it to turn with the front, so he's trying to slide the rear to make up for it. When he gets into situations where he wants to steer with the front, it doesn't work. As he gets stronger week-to-week, they're slowly balancing the bike and working on the stiffness to dial him in. But they're chasing a moving target as he's getting stronger each week.
Thanks ML, good info.

well his post race interviews cover it quite well. basically they still chasing that bike setup as eli gets stronger (like ml said). they had 2 full days of testing and he is much happier with the bike now.
he was definitely catching roczen but obviously roczen had a much better off season and eli got tight the last 8 or so laps. in his case probably a lack of muscular endurance. no decent weight training in the off season. his base fitness (cardiovascular) is not the problem I would imagine.
