I finally rid myself of all magazine subscriptions and then my mother-in-law goes and buys me a brand new Racer X subscription for Christmas!

I subscribe to MXA and enjoy reading the bike tests, parts reviews, gear reviews, and how-to articles for working on our bikes.

Ping is the only reason I go to the Racer X website. Nothing else of value there for me.

1 tooth in the front is equal to 3 in the rear.
I thought it was, One from Jody in the rear was better than 3 in the front, from Don Maeda. Laughing

I don't mean to completely discredit the guy. Hes been around since Moses raced 125C. But maybe that's why he's allowed himself to get increasingly calloused, and overly nostalgic over the last decade or so.

Close, I was actually looking for no magazines at all...

Now every time it comes in the mail I think about the cover curse, and hope Eli Tomac isn't on it.

I think this has created sort of an issue with me because now I'm afraid to open the mailbox.

Did anybody catch the "don't listen to the man in the orange helmet" comment by ping in the racer x 450sxf dialed in segment video.

I think it's pretty funny. Ping basically says in stock trim the 450 kxf is a really good bike. Don't have to change much. Even though mxa often wants to change hundred things on every bike and really likes to point out and exaggerate a bikes shortcomings.

I thought it was really funny. You guys might not though lol.
1st of all I've never heard of MXA wanting "to change hundred things" on ANY bike let alone "every bike."

2nd of all, saying that MXA "really likes to point out and exaggerate a bikes shortcomings" should be stated as an opinion, since that's what it is. Even if that's not just an opinion.....what better way to differentiate 2 bikes that are extremely close in performance?

3rd of all, Ping doesn't believe in the fact of evolution......IMO, this alone makes every other opinion of his suspect.

MXA has multiple test racers, with skills closer to mine than Pings. They RACE test their bikes throughout the entire year. I personally value the opinion of the collective crew at MXA more than Pings.

though, I will agree, I think it's funny.....so there's THAT!

Well since we are on the topic of Jody, I'll share one with you.

I should say that first, I read every issue of MXA and Jody's Box in the 80's.
Jody's Box was often times brilliant. Jody is a very creative writer.

Fast forward to the late 90's.

I hadn't bought an issue of MXA in forever. I pick it up off the stand and read Jody's Box.
It was a reworked Jody's Box from 1983. Almost verbatim.

I remember everything he had written.
Apparently he figured nobody would.

Basically I caught Jody "phoning one in".

I sent him a fax calling him out and maybe I was a little extra crispy in my criticism.

Surprising (to me), he called my house to rip me a new one.

I wrote off Jody that day.

Never meet your heroes.

I noticed that too. Seen many phone in Jody's box's. Calls them in from Fast House, where all the legends hang out.

I don't think it's fair to drag REM into this. The club is run by a really cool family, and hundreds of regular Joes turn up week in and out to race.

I have noticed a lot of recycling of articles in Mxa

The typical internet aficionado doesn't have the attention span or reading comprehension to make it all the way through a MXA bike test or shootout. And just how much does Jody have to do with the mag these days? Seems there is more input from others than ever before. Other than Jody's claim to fame factory Hodaka ride, MXA has had serious factory level talent testing bikes over the decades. But I get it, Transworlds one paragraph race test is where it's at these days. As long as the seat doesn't make some bikini clad chics ass look fat it's a winner.

I've always thought MXA actually put very little info about the performance of the motorcycle in their tests. Jody is the king of specs info, but if I'm a buyer and want to know what the bikes are doing on the track I'm putting more weight into shootouts done by Vital MX or Jimmy Lewis at Dirt Bike Test. Ping is doing very well with his Dialed In tests as well.

And I've never questioned Jody's knowledge about motocross or anything else, just his lack of acknowledging that there might be other guys who know a little bit too.
2/2/2016 5:18pm
Hey thanks to Jody's thinking you can race one event not even qualify for it just enter and your in and if you win your class you can be crowned a world champion. World Vet Championships ;-) This is brilliant logic it go's hand in hand with there 2-stroke rants about costs. Why travel the world for a World Title when you can go to GH.
I think MXA do fine with there magazine. If i don't like it i won't buy it.

Factories absolutely listen to mxa. I remember back in the 80's and early 90's that certain bikes would get praise from the other mags, while mxa would point out certain flaws; the very next year the bikes would have the "flaws" either fixed or addressed. At one time mxa was the literal voice of the mx industry. I've had a year subscription to racer x, and I've never even seen one bike being tested. I do, however, know what Blake Wharton's band sounds like, and how the mx scene in Saudi Arabia is operating lol. I'd wager 90% of young kids who get into mx, do so because they like reading about dirt bikes; they aren't getting served by the stupid "lifestyle" mags that litter the newsstands. MXA is the only magazine for people who are interested in the technical aspects of bikes, and race coverage.
X2 I had a subscription from them all the way back to 1983. they where the shit back then. test riders? the KING, Brooks, I'm not even going to strain to think or type all of it. they are serious about test and tuning. Jody over the years is not the same writer and is very jaded now. its a shame that the greatest moto mag has turned into what is today. the mailbox still has mxa in it also racer x. no twmx crap. dirt rider not to bad tho. Jody please have an 80's flashback. those were the best years...

I tried to stay unbiased. Then I read an article he wrote about the BMW 450 that he was supposed to race. He apparently rode it 50 feet in the parking lot, turned around, tossed it on the stand and refused to ride it anymore.

He then went on a lengthy diatribe about how he has been riding bikes forever, and is so keen at determining what constitutes a good bike from a bad bike, that he only needed 50 feet from the truck to the trail head to determine it was junk.

He also added that the bikes he favors in shootouts are the ones that "listen MXA's suggestions" in the previous shootouts for the following year's bike. The fucker thinks he is the defacto R&D department for all 6 major manufacturers...

That is not arrogant. Arrogant doesnt even cover that. That's delusional. Extremely delusional. The OEMs don't give a fuck about an opinionated, arrogant old man. and if you think you can completely toss a bike to the wolves after 50 feet across a parking lot, you're higher than a kite. someone has to know what article im talking about.

If so, then strange that MXA should criticise Yamaha for that....unless they wanted to run a YZ250X on a motocross track....not Yamaha's fault they are doing that.

Offroad you need a lighter pull because you have to work the clutch a lot in the tight sections and you typically ride longer periods. It can get by with softer springs because the power is designed to hit much softer and smoother. The clutch can hold the smoother power easier than the hard hitting standard YZ power.
Yep, so why did MXA criticise that when that was the intention!

First off I didn't take it as a criticism, just an observation. Secondly they make mention that they are testing its viability as a motocross bike. Mxa only tests offroad models in a motocross setting and states it as such.

Just to clarify in case someone might think it is from senility, its not because Jody is old, he has been a self important pompous ass for at least 30 years.

MXA is the go to for bike test n tech articles. No other publication come close.

RacerX is for entertainment and does it extremely well. Much more reading content than any other mag.

Transworld seems like a mag that half of its readers are most likely reading it in prison. Ya bra...hate to say it but it is what it is bra.

Never understood the hate for Jody. The guy has made a career out of playing with all things moto. Maybe it is jealousy

My name is Ian Fitz-Gibbon...Lol...no reason to be anonymous. Can you explain your opinion? If someone said 2+2 doesn't equal 4.....would you not think every other opinion of theirs is suspect?....just so you know, those are rhetorical questions. You did prove your last point with your post though....I'll give you that!

For the most part, IMO, when people use epithets or derogatory terms to attack others with little or no explanation for their reasoning, it usually points to their narrow vocabulary and inability to debate.

Jody claims to have been a factory Hodaka rider sometime in the 1970's. I raced CMC in the 70's and 80's many times in the pro class. I saw Jody there many times and although I am not sure what class he raced in, it definitely was not the pro class. Jody was an intermediate at best.

If that is true, then I am not sure what happened by the late 70's. He definitely was not in the pro class or going pro speed in southern California.
Yep Andy is correct, I was at those So Cal races too.

Jody would have had a hard winning the Novice class but from reading his articles you would think he was Pro level fast.

I think the problem was he was a tooth off on the rear sprocket, one more tooth and we have a different ballgame. Smile

But I do read the mag and it has its niche in the moto community.

I've seen Jody's name in results from a long ways back, a lot more than I see of any of yours and mine, in print. It does not mean that he has not slowed down through the years, hell, we all have!Woohoo I doubt anyone here, excluding a few, know how much work it takes to put out a mag the quality of MXA. Jody has contributed more to the sport than anybody short of Roger D. I think he's staffed the publication with enough talent that he's loosened the reins a bit. I think the YZ250X critic is by motos standard, not off road. Just read it and enjoy.Tongue Ping makes a little bite and everyone's out to break the internet. I just enjoy moto, I just don't have the time to hate anymore.Wink

Well said....You have to take it for what it is. It is someones opinion just like the guys above talking about clutches and offroad riding. I have the exact opposite opinion about what kind of clutch that you run in offroad and I have raced a lot of it. Then again, it is just my opinion and the setup that works for me.

I'm thinking you don't race/ride /test for 40+ years and not learn a thing or two about what works and doesn't in motocross. He isn't the ONLY test rider either.
I still like my fresh, new MXA every month regardless of what Ping says.

I'm a Christian, and I did not take what he said as insulting towards my faith. It almost sounds like you are a science denier, in my opinion. In your opinion, is the earth flat and 2 thousand years old? Just curious. In no way am I insulting you religious beliefs. You should open yourself to a discussion, not to hurl insults a each others. This goes for all of us.
