I thought I read that the practice mechanic put the standard tank on instead of the factory one that holds more and it just simply ran out of fuel.. I'm probably wrong though haha
You're not, that's what Metcalfe said in an interview after he was freed from his contract.

It is laughable that you guys believe it was just an electrical issue. Blue smoke=oil smoke=sad engine parts. Just because they got it bump started and he idled around does not rule out an engine failure. My guess, which was already mentioned here, would be a faulty injector causing it to run lean...causing detonation, which causes great sadness to the combustion chamber.

I was at the race and didn't see one puff of smoke before it shut off and after he got it fired back up.

Nor did I see any when he shut it off for the interview and fired it back up.

The motor was fine.

In another thread I mentioned teams always blame electrical or spark plug.

I also posted that while a pinched hose could cause a fuel starvation problem it is highly unlikely with EFI.

I also posted vapor lock doesnt cause smoke on Any engine.

I was told I was wrong. Lolz.

Looked like blue smoke, thats oil plain and simple. Only path of oil to the cumbustion chamber is via rings, head gasket or crankcase vent. Since MX bikes vent to atmosphere that leaves rings or head gasket. I say they broke an oil ring or ran hot and blew a head gasket. Both would allow the bike to refire and run a short time.

Taking the cap off to release a vacuum is not vapor lock. Vapor lock is heating a section of fuel to the point of boiling, hence the term vapor.

Whatever happened, I'll bet that engine is not in the bike at the next race.

So is it vacuum lock?
We call it airbound, when fuel is being consumed by gravity, and air cannot enter to replace it.

In one of the threads it was posted the team was riding the bike in the pits trying to duplicate the problem. If that was the case it doesn't sound mechanical to me....

They really won't know till tear down. You could have a problem that you would have to get the engine under race conditions to replicate. But blue smoke is oil and it had to come from somewhere.

Yep. Practice when Suzuki never checked in on him. What a POS move that was.
Metcalfe himself said that the bike ran out of fuel which caused that crash. The Southwick incident on the Honda was because he ran out of fuel too.

Maybe JC probably got fed up with that whole "I can't thank..." speech from Cooper...

...either that, or Savatgy probably threw in a few more prayers than Webb during the week.

We need a professional Evangicical to do the analysis I think...

Absolutely, so why Cooper keeps mentioning it I don't know. It's time he took responsibility for his awesome ability to ride a motocross bike, its all him and no higher power I'm sure.

With regards to the bike, I'm pretty sure it will turn out to be an ignition/fuel mixture/temperature sensor problem, we have to deal with problematic engines all the time and when they are over fueling we get smoke similar to the Yamaha.
Mucktub is backwards for butkcum kinda like your posts.

Did you see any smoke before the bike died? What about after he got it re-fired?

A vapor-locked bike does not spew smoke out of the exhaust when it's kicked over like that (and you would have to be a retard to think that's gas vapor misting out of the exhaust). No healthy [four stroke] bike spews smoke out of the exhaust like that under any conditions, unless oil was dumped into the cylinder. That can really only mean a few things: cracked piston, toasted ring or valve. Something allowed oil to burn. That something was not vapor-lock.

I watched it on tv and they were not following him, so no I did not see any while he was racing. But I sure saw a fuck load of blue smoke when he was kicking it...but I guess you missed that.

These teams hack their harnesses up to make them lighter. The bike runs fine during the heat race but they start hitting it with the pressure washer (or the ol Windex/air compressor) and it gets moisture inside the loom. Ask Cianciarulo and Wilson.

I was there, so no, I didn't miss the blue smoke.

But I did not see one puff of smoke before or after.

If a motor is letting go, it usually gives signs before it happens. And if it was completely thrashed, it wouldn't have fired back up, twice.

Just read the article on RacerX. It's not a good look for teams to be so dishonest. is it that big of a deal to explain the real problem on a race bike? No one things these problems are going to happen on their stock bike........... We understand it's a race engine, in a race scenario, being pushed as hard as it can be and things happen. it's a much better look for the team, the rider, the bike / brand to be honest and open than putting out 3 different b.s. versions of a story trying to cover.

It's pretty sad.

This is one of the few sports where this goes on like this, bike malfunctions, injuries... etc. It's hilarious.

There was smoke coming out of the muffler.. So that makes it very obvious some one forgot to grease the muffler bearing and it dried out..

No one said the bike " let go. "

it has been said that it overheated from running too lean though, which would have caused exactly what we saw.

Not every instance of smoke in the exhaust means the engine grenaded.

Go back to playing with your Ken barbie you whining sum bitch. It is now Tuesday and it is possible that they have yet to figure out the issue. RacerX merely copied and pasted comments from Saturday and put it together for a little snidbit of information. The team doesn't owe you shit, they don't owe you anything other than what they produce on the track, you are not entitled to all of the information. #pinkjeepsrule #playhouse

Bullshit they have not figured the issue out. I'll guarantee a team as professional and dedicated as Star had that baby torn down that night..

We have a winner. Most likely a ring/valve seal configuration that they designed to be right on the edge as is for less friction. Not like they expect a ton of time on these motors before replacement. Cracked piston would make sense too, but if they really were running it hard up and down the pits I'm not sure about that. I've seen bikes run with cracked pistons but that seems like a bit of a stretch

Blown head gasket or cracked ring, either of which allowed combustion to pressurize the crankcase which then forced oil out the breather and into the intake tract (assuming they run stock routing).

Speaking of all these wiring harness problems and electrical gremlins, I'd like to point out that EFI is the most awesomest thing to ever happen to MX bikes.

Just because they tore down the bike "that" night, doesn't mean they know the root cause of the failure...finding the root cause can take time.

If, for example, (as mentioned above) the piston was cracked...WELL..why did it crack? A cast or forging defect? Scoring? Detonation? Pre-ignition?

Really though why is it so important to everyone?

Ask yourself the same question, you are the one taking time to conjur up different scenarios. You're kinda talking outta both sides of your mouth...

You Yamaha boys got your egos deflated a bit and it is really showing. Send me your addresses and I will gladly mail you a box of Kleenex.

Why is it so important? The bike of the guy leading the Championship craps out and you wonder why we are interested?

It's important to me because I am a Yamaha guy, and also a huge motorcycle nerd, so I am indeed very curious to know what happened. Also yeah championship blah blah blah what he said, as well!

You should go back and read my post..Did you miss the part where I said "As mentioned above"?

Oh..and more a Honda guy trying out a Yamaha this year.

Lastly, whatever failed on his bike is nothing like the "parts" we have on our bikes..
