treads are the same different compound.
In regards to your question, I would say a big part of it would have to do with the r&d process just like with any other product. They make very limited runs of tires they are experimenting with at the time. I always enjoyed watching road racing on days they were qualifying especially at Daytona. Its crazy all the stacks of tires they go through, some engineering just good for 3 laps. One to warm up, hot lap, and to cool down.

I mean I'd be good with some tires that hooked up like a dunlop slick on a road course...just sayin.
Also a lot of the parts you see are for research and development.

In all reality.. A little birdie told me a lot of the pro's wish they could still run their standard Bridgestone M403's.
Dunlop make the race replica tires for a while then stopped because they were not selling.
A) they were too expensive
B ) they were so soft they didn't last.
There is a company that make some incredibly soft tires that you can still get. They have amazing traction but they will only last for one race or two hard rides offroad. Can't remember the name right now but Slavens racing can order you one if you want.
The compound can be so soft that you would get mad to change tires every motos. That is quite a budget.

a lot of pros use an aggressive intermediate tire but the softer compounds allow for use on harder dirt. the problem is these wear out in only a few rides.
they are good for one race maybe two. not for your average joe who needs a tire for a few months of riding
These tires are amazing. Better than the 756RR 's Soft, great grip and....they will last you one race.
Also, Dunlop has released their factory Endurocross tire this year to the public, I'm thinking about getting one for the Sacramento race but I'm having trouble justifying the price, which I think would be the problem for any works tire sold to the public. Supposedly you have to buy these directly from Dunlop as well, since the lifespan of the rubber is so short it can't sit on shelves very long. Really I think the reason they are not available generally is because of the short lifespan and high price, for most riders it just doesn't make a lot of sense I guess.
I'm running Pirelli, Michelin and Dunlop.
