Dude have you seen Bro, I watched it the other night. Luckily I have fast forward on the DVR. Motocrossers are badasses that party with skanks and fuck shit up 24/7. Try to keep up.

I'd build a 26" or 24" wheeled dirt jumper. You won't have to work as much (bigger wheels = less rolling resistance = less pedaling) and you can use them anywhere you want. Hell, you could even run some decent mountain bike trails on one if you want. Or (if you're more of a mtb guy rather than a BMX guy), look at a adjustable-travel 26" hardtail (i.e. Transition TransAM, On-One 456, Santa Cruz Chameleon). Extremely versatile bikes that you can take to the skate park one weekend, and then go do a XC race the following weekend. I have a Transition TransAM that I put a Rockshox Domain fork on that's adjustable from 100mm to 160mm of travel. I've ridden it in skateparks, mellow xc trails, pump tracks, long-distance races, and even lift-access downhill runs in Colorado.

In my opinion, they're like a 250 2-stroke, you can do just about anything you want with them, they're fun as hell, and it's the bike I always seem to come back to.

skicross, snowcross, skatecross, bicyclemotocross, chriscross will make you "jump jump"......pretty spot on I'd say!

I started riding park and dirt jumps several years back on a 26" dj with a 4" travel fork. In the last year I switched to 20". I would say if you just want to flow jumps and pump stuff and occasionally ride on dirt that is a little bumpy, a 26" is the way to go because its so stable and easy to ride. I think the 20" is more fun but coming from a moto and mtb background it took a lot of riding to get used to the short rear end and quicker ("twitchy") handling. the 20" is more fun in tight bowls at skate parks and doing spins and manuals

I would definitely get a 26" dirt jumper. It will fit you a lot nicer than any BMX will, and you'll appreciate the suspension. Also a much more practical bike than a BMX and you can do more types of riding with it. Recently the price of dirt jump bikes has been going down, so you could buy a pretty nice one for a decent money. Look in the BUY/SELL section on www.pinkbike.com and just look around in your area for a nice used one. Good luck with the shopping! Woohoo

I just got done building mine 2 days ago...minus the borrowed pedals and wheelset from my friend for a few days. Nothing like cruising the streets with a couple guys. We don't have parks around here so in the summer we hit the trails and street pretty hard.

20" bikes aren't really that twitchy. Sounds to me like a 26" could be up your alley, like others have said they are way more forgiving.....and you can actually sit down.

That was 30 years ago, this is now. Times have changed a lot in the BMX scene. I know a few kids who race, but the come out and ride trails a lot more....there is no high school hating between us at all.

@500guy

I am actually 27 years old, have a BS degree and have a descent full time job. You just came in here to hate and not even contribute, so expect to get bitched at. I don't know where all your hate is coming from, but relax man. If you can't see the freestyle BMX scene far outweighs the race scene, then you my friend are just uneducated. Racing is dead, has been for a long time. Not that it is non-existent, but compared to the street/park/trailer scene, it is just a very small fraction. Go to any BMX wholesale website and look at the amount of freestyle products compared to the race section. BMX has died some in the last 5 years due to the scooter craze and how outrageous BMX parts have become. Go to any city and look at the group of 50+ kids out riding. And I'll bet you none of them have ever stepped foot on a racetrack. I look at my bike as a way to relax and cruise around, not to compete with it....and that is how most kids attitudes are on 20" bikes.

I know nobody is going to believe me here......but I could bust that shit completely flat going towards upside down! I actually miss it a lot.....but at my age I'd splat like a sack of shit I think.

You guys really have me thinking about getting a bike now. Besides the obvious 2", what is the biggest difference between a 24" & 26"?

Chainstay length, head angle (well, geometry, in general), fork options if you want suspension

Well at first I bought a Redline 21.5" frame and then had second thoughts , so I sold it. A year later I got the urge again and came a across a guy locally selling a 21.75" Schwinn Pro-stock and was going to build it old school with Tuff's and everything. I did a bunch of research before I bought it and wanted a light weight frame but also something that was extremely durable. This was kind of a " best of both worlds " type frame. The guy who built this one was going to help me build mine.....but that's been a good 5yrs ago.

I just could NOT get into the cruiser class! I never felt comfortable on them at all and I really need the real " BMX 20" " feel below me. But at 6-1".....the 20's just didn't fit me any more.

I guarantee you GuyB would have understood your point, and I got it too. Anybody who raced BMX in the '70s or '80s would get it.

No need to sugar coat it for some of the younger people here. As a BMX RACER, freestyle was considered really freaking lame at that time. I know things are different now, but I think you were speaking of how it used to be and you were absolutely right. Nothing was more annoying than having freestyle bundled with actual racing when freestyle was in it's infancy. One is very different than the other.

24" S&M I race it, dirt jump it, ride pools and take it down some MTB trails.

I am currently restoring my 1999 DK General Lee. Probably won't ride it. Been looking at the 26" with a suspension fork. I rode one that belongs to a buddy at Ray's indoor park in Milwaukee. Seems like they would be the best all around bike for riding there or dirt jumping. At 6'2" 210 lbs, I don't really feel like tearing up the parks anymore. Bicycles hurt!!!
Excellent piece! I have my oldest son's General Lee---in orange. I've had several offers to buy it, but there is no way it leaves the family...

is yours black or orange?
Originally it was orange, but got so beat up that I had to paint it and went black. I have since installed some blue rims with silver walls that I think will look really good with the original orange paint and blue decals. Such a shame that they sold out and started selling a cheap general lee at wal-mart. This one will look good hanging in the basement by my moto memorabilia, but is still a good frame by today's standards IMO.

That picture threw me for a second. At first glance on my phone, that looked like a rotor on your back wheel. I was like "no way he's running disc brakes, haha."

What years did you live in Indiana and race?

Your name? I race and my wife and kids still do.

I've built this bike for some street, park and trails riding. 24" wheels with a rigid bmx style fork. So much fun to ride

funny that I used my "race" bike for both and the race scene was so small that "racing" was actually lame compared to freestyle. We had a dirt quarter pipe cut in the side of the start hill and rode that more than we actually rode the track...

and I actually raced BMX before there were start hills for us that live in the flats

I still love BMX in every regard and wish I had some hills to ride on as I would love to try out one of those 26" dirt jumpers.

This is exactly what I rode in 1980. I rode the piss out of this bike back when it was safe to bike 20 miles, after dark, and not get kidnapped.
