I was never a big fan but, I was talking with some friends about a photo of him chasing Bailey, and we all agreed he got hosed out of a sx title. Now, I'm a big time fan of Ward but, he got away with one there. It got me thinking about how many times the ama has blown it concerning rules enforcement/ interpretation. Especially, the times when titles were at stake. Obviously, the last big cluster was the fuel incident with RC. The first questionable move in my mind would have been the Karsmakers rule.

Ture that, met him at Seattle SX in '10, by far one of the nicest dudes I've ever met. I'm sure he's not used to a ton of attention at SX races, but I saw him in his trademark Dunlop yellow fleece and called out his name. He smiled, walked right over, and shot the shit with me for at least 15 minutes like it was nothing out of his day.

Yeah. Ward wadded up and rode backwards. I remember Magoo got penalized for doing the same thing once. I don't doubt for a minute that Broc's a good dude. He just wasn't the guy I wanted to see win.

Broc has got to be the most underrated champion of all time! I remember him battling tooth and nail with David Baily riding a production based POS yz490. How he even stayed with Bailey on that RC500 is beyond me.

"GOLDEN BOY" was as smooth as anyone. One of the most precise technical riders ever IMO. The ALS-1, JT facemask and v-1000 chest protector combo ruled too.

Probably my favorite rider of all time. Just a hair over Lechien.

While I am also a Jeff Ward fan Glover got hosed in the 1985 Supercross series. He got penalized for riding backwards, but Ward got nothing for doing the same thing. Title went to Ward.

If I am not mistaken it got a little weird when the AMA official who made the call got a job with Kawasaki soon after.

I was lucky enough to be a kid during the glover/ward years. Great, great, memories. Glover is/was a great rider.

When I was a teenager, he used to come into the Souplantation I worked at a couple of times a year. Every time he was by himself, he would take as much time as I wanted to just shoot the shit about his career. Really a great guy.

I would place Stanton before Glover. Glover was a beast on his bike and got his due in 1983 and 1985 when he won the 500 title.

He's forgotten and that is a damm shame. The sport is not the best at teaching the history of the sport.

All the riders who could win back in the 80's that were NOT on Honda's were heros. I was a Wardy fan but Glover was also champion in every way.

That's great to hear such kind words about a good guy. It's not a daily occurrence over here.

Definitely one of the GOAT. He was good on any size bike, MX or SX - he was always a threat to win.

Me too.....big time.

I do keep hearing that he's an under rated or forgotten champion.........but me thinks otherwise. His name still pops up all the time. And back in the day he was always one of the guys who got mentioned with Bailey , O'mara , Leichien , Magoo , Johnson , ect......

At least I've never forgotten him! Dude was a great champion and could ride the wheels off of anything he threw a leg over!

Back then you had to ride both the heat and a semi to transfer to the main. I believe the last 2 guys in the heat were eliminated right off the bat…or at least the last guy. Wardy crashed in a tricky horseshoe-type section where he had to go backwards to bump start his bike (being the shorty he is), then he worked his way to mid-pack in the heat which transferred him to the semi, where he qualified for the main. If the AMA upheld their backwards rule he would’ve got last in the heat and been done…..not even make it to the semi or main to race for the championship. They were separated by a couple points coming into the race and the Dogger had a mathematical chance at the title too. At the time I was a Yamaha rider and fan, and was rooting for Broc; years later I decided that the AMA made the right decision. Let them decide it on the track racing! Don’t let the refs decide the title. It’s like 30 secs to go in a basketball game and the refs call some ticky tack, nit pickin fouls that decide the outcome. The bummer thing was that Wardy didn’t get to celebrate that night. Broc won many other championships and is a champion is his own rite…….but that night he had nothing for Wardy in the main….and THAT’S how titles are supposed to be settled….IMHO.

Thinking back to 1985 when I'd read mxa stories about Glover, ward, and all the other greats, brings on the kind of nostalgia that makes my heart ache and fills me with the regret of growing old. I was once a young kid with no responsibilities save for reading my mx magazine. The longing for lost youth is the toughest part of life. I'm so thankful for great champions like Broc Glover, who have given me so many good memories.

Broc Glover was the man. My personal favorite rider of that era and very humble......Cool dude for sure...

Wasn't it Mike Goodwin who basically said he was not about to have Ward DQ'd , because he did not want the title decided on a technicality? Broc mentioned this in an old MXA interview ,I believe.

I was just thinking about Hannah who is an amazing person, he will do anything to help a friend, I remember reading about Burgett not getting rehired at Yamaha and when Bob found out he went to Yamaha and made them give Burgett a one year contract before Bob himself would sign up again with them, you can tell Bob is a first class act and what is so absolutely great about Bob is that he always has said what he thinks, SO refreshing.... brings me to this, he has always said he does not like Glover and Howerton and I bet you anything those two guys are the best most friendly guys you would ever want to meet.

What's up with Hannah's not liking Howerton and Glover ?

Hannah was awesome obviously but in many of his interviews he spouted off who he liked and disliked as if it mattered ... It didn't .

I think Hannah still harbors a good bit of resentment over the "Let Broc Bye" incident. That seems to be something that haunts him to this day. I don't think its as personal as it is with Howerton, though.

The Hannah/Howerton relationship makes Reed/Stewart look like best buds. Just go on youtube and pull up some Hannah interviews, he can explain it a lot better than I can.

I always liked Glover, that dude's style was always on point. So smooth and clinical in his riding, never looked out of shape. If you're looking for a modern day comparison, Ryan Dungey reminds me A LOT of Glover.

Yep, Glover one cool dude, I was there in 76, drove over with my dad from Georgia to Louisiana to the 125/500 National MX race.

Could hardly see anything at that crappy track, was sandy, probably a great track for riding but zero for fans, it is just a fog in my mind till today, such a waste of a track for the fans, I just have little flashes in my mind about it, don't even hardly remember seeing anyone actually riding their bikes, saw Glover's bike in the pits, snapped a photo of Smith coming off the track, one big red/white/blue flash of energy.

oh, back to Glover, yep there are those certain riders who ride with their heads, Marty Smith also comes to mind, Roger DeCoster, those guys were practically never out of shape - always riding within their limits, pretty well the opposite of Hannah.

Yeah...met him the same way at a St. Louis SX a few years back. He seemed to really appreciate the acknowledgement, and was super friendly to my girlfriend and her son, who had no idea at all who "Broc Glover" was. Good dude, and a very underrated rider in his time.

I also witnessed him taking all kinds of shit from Tony Alessi at the same race for not having "good tires" (I guess that's code for a factory tire) for Mike to ride on that night. Tony pretty much got right up in Broc's face too...and Broc was cool throughout the ordeal. He told Tony to leave the Dunlop pit, and he did...still ranting and raving. I was pretty impressed the way Broc didn't lose his cool during that.
