People that say "you can't" need to stay the fuk out of the way of the people that are doing it.

Negativity kills more aspiration that you can imagine and this country now thrives on negativity.

The bumblebee thing is completely false.

Also, if you (as a parent) are a mini-dad...your kid is likely not making a living racing mx. Unless you are an Alessi.
In which case (if you're an Alessi) he's unlikely to make a living after racing mx*.

*Not a dig on MA in particular, but on home schooling mx kids and not having them be educated enough to do anything outside token jobs in 'the industry'.

I come across a lot of parents and riders and the question I get more than anything is... You think he can do it?? You think he can go pro? Only one time have a said yes. I don't mean local pro . I mean national level. I can name a 100 signs. That would not give anyone else a chance to answer. This is for the dad's just wondering. I'll go first.
If your rider is working on his/her 3rd year in the beginner class he/she is not going to make a living racing.
GO!!
You last sentence sums it up. "Make a living" This sport you don't get a rookie 200k paycheck. I bet you take away any parental money and maybe top 30 riders in the 250 and 450 can make enough money to live on. The top 10 make a great living.

I probably spend $5K a year taking my son racing locally. He enjoys and we spend a lot of quality time together. He's a top 5 local kid and I don't see him making a living at it but we enjoy it,

One of my best friends was a 4 time National Champ and won LL in the B class and came back the next year to win the A class beating Jeff Emig and Damon Bradshaw. He was a top ten rider in the Pro's but injuries took their too and now he is a Dentist.

I have a theory on the 13/14 yo beginners. It is very very possible to make it to the wp level. It's just a theory but I believe if a parent and a rider from day one get a plan and stick to a plan made by a mx know how.. They can qualify for a pro national event. It would take about 5 years and and around 10,000 hours dedicated to nothing but getting stronger and faster on a bike. With minimal down time. 40 hours a week, eating for speed, working out for speed, riding, sleeping and mentally preparing. That would take care of the 70% earned. Now to top 20... That is the other 30% that god gave you or didn't. I've seen riders do this and go from national level novice champions and in 2 or 3 more years run up front in A. Then run out of steam or funds and have to hang it up. When all they needed was one more solid year.

Don't pick 3 people that have made it compared to the thousands who haven't to dispute someone's point. Obviously there are exceptions but I feel we are all speaking generally. Lots of great response. Some have me chuckling even though it's not funny.

Yeah, except that what they're doing is blowing all their income, retirements savings, taking a second mortgage out, etc. to fund that dream. Then, when it doesn't come true, the rest of us will be the ones getting social security at a later date, paying the cost of the bank eating their loan, and funding their home schooled kid's attempt to gain employment somewhere in 'the industry'.

People should follow their dreams. They shouldn't push their kids into following the parents dream, and especially if they're sacrificing their financial security. For every Villopoto, there are how many Izzi's? Might as well just buy lottery tickets.

I remember seeing lots of kids that were blazing fast, that everyone knew were going to clean up as pros here in the NW. Only a couple did. Personally I think kids would be better advised to get a job that pays well enough to fund the sport at an amateur level and enjoying it for life.

I'm all for chasing dreams. Backup plans are wise too.
Obviously, I'd also wish I hadn't of spent so much money on the titty bar when I'm 70. I still would hope I'd give my kid all my support at whatever he chooses he wants to do.

What makes you guys so high and mighty to tell someone else that they can't achieve their goals, you're in no place to say that. I think the biggest sign your kid won't make is if his mentally affected by being told negative stuff like this. Besides we're all looking at it from an outside perspective, as far as I know no one that's commented has been pro, so how are us Vitards to know what it takes to make it?

If your kid is in an advancement class & healthy,

you check the Calendar & it happens to be Sept.

you enter his name here

http://results.americanmotorcyclist.com/Riders

& his/her RPV score is below 15.0 every year.

How do you know who has been pro by screen names/posting? Also, it's a frickin thread on a message board. If someone is weak minded enough to take every comment to heart then they probably won't succeed at anything. Holy shit some of you are taking this to heart.

If he's had 3 or more concussions before the age of 8 and you are calling him a Pusey for not wanting it bad enough. And you tell him which riders to take out before every gate drop.

There's a reason I said "as far as I know".

Yeah it might just be a message board, but everyone's expressing their opinion so one would assume they've expressed that opinion to someone in real life. When the 95% is telling you that you can't do something, you kind of start to believe them.

Small small world we live in
My sis went to Loyala for her M.S.
If you were by any chance a Sigma Chi you may be acquainted with my older brother who was an ASU student at the time you were there. Ever ride/race at Burnthill?? Or buy bikes from JT on Parker??

There are plenty of stories about how guys bloomed late etc. There are also plenty of kids who don't make it who probably should have given the right opportunity.

Once you get into the bike wheel class around age 13. You should progressively be getting towards the front and by 20 being able to run top 5 with a decent bike in a Amateur national 250 or 450 class. If you are not progressing that fast then typically there is something missing i.e. talent or work ethic or influence.

E.G.
A young Shaun Simpson was trained by his father Wullie Simpson Ex GP rider and kept away from all the racing as a kid. Instead he focussed on riding ability. Shaun was a late bloomer but quickly progressed into MX2 GP top 5's and again has steadily done the same in 450's. Blessed with natural talent, hard work and the correct influence around you and you can get there. A 100k motorhome and race budget does not and will not guarantee anything. Regardless of dreams.

So in that respect a lot of parents should yes, let them realise the dreams as a racer at whatever level that may be. But also try and challenge the kids mind into wanting possible alternative dreams through education and a different path in life.

As I said before. That 100k a year racing money would be better spent rider training and hours and hours of practicing and local racing. If you can dominate your local class there are other ways to push a rider. Give the pack a 20 second start and race the clock whilst coming through the pack is more beneficial than riding a 20k bike in a class you can dominate. If you can do that at a decent district level then maybe its time to take it seriously as a full time racer.

Lots of the young superstars these days don't transition as well as the kids from 10 years ago because little guys bike was worth 2-3 seconds a lap in the amateurs as the parents focussed so much on getting the start and holding out front rather than what truly matters. Raw speed. Gets to the pro's and advantage lost.

If you have to ask the kid if they want to ride, or tell them they need to go ride. They don't have it.

If you don't have a track to ride Monday thru Friday, they aren't gonna make it.

If you don't own a RV....

I'll do you one better. I've been a moto dad. Mine didn't have it. Had the equipment everywhere but between his ears. Its how I learned you can't teach it. If it's not blatantly obvious from day one (no matter the start age), it's just not there. Forcing it only makes it worse. Painful, expensive, lesson.

Yet there are still guys shelling out tens of thousands following the nationals to qualify a couple times (if that) a year and scrore no points. It baffles me.

There are more than enough millionaire family's in the USA to support the pro class moving forward. Everyone else can watch.
